Also my favorite recharged game. In the beginning I kept bumping into rocks until I started using the classic joystick. For me as a retro gamer who grew up with the CX40 joystick, this game works perfectly with the classic joystick.

I know the rest of the gaming industry was moving towards C++ compilers at the time, but with Atari Jag devs still having to use assembler for their code...it had that old school feel from the 16-bit days and I'm glad the people at Atari had that attitude. Gret interview guys!

I rate T2K, T4K, T3K in that order. All are excellent in there own right. I'm hoping that ATARI considers emulating T3K with enhancements such as HD, 60fps, online multiplayer, leaderboards, etc, and releases it on modern platforms. A TEMPEST arcade cab featuring every game in the series would also be excellent.

Yea its a fun game and yes its a little bit glitchy. I got stomped in the tournament we had but I blame it on me with my lack of experience playing it and my laggy old lcd tv. Need a TV with a game mode. Fun time though and would like to do it again.
Yeah- we need to do another. I think Obsidian Contraption said there are get together matches set up on Discord. Maybe that will be cool

The original Donkey Kong on the 7800 is a port of the NES version. It’s also missing the conveyor belt level.

The XM module made sense at the time it was being developed. Ballblazer carts were being destroyed to allow for homebrews with pokey audio but that wasn't sustainable. It also would allow for native high score cartridge compatibility. But today we have a couple pokey chip replacements like the Hokey and we have the audiovox and save keys that serve the same function as the high score cart. Still it would've been cool to have the unit come to light but now it's part of that legend of unreleased stuff like the Atari 7800 keyboard, laserdisc attachment and the original high score cart. Shame for anybody who got the XM version but Donkey Kong PK is awesome!

@@Atari7800Forever no clue but it's pretty moot. I don't know if the save key/audiovox works with the same code or not either. The high score cartridge was made available in very limited quantities by Vendel and Rubio in 2001ish. Next to nobody has them. Supporting the audiovox and save keys makes more sense because you can get them from Atariage, Etsy from time to time from brex, and even DIY them so those are widely available.

I like T4K a lot. I do wish they could get the online scoreboards working. But, not a bad game at all. The anthology is interesting. Not all of the games are great, but the vibe and presentation is top notch. I am playing on my VCS using ChimeraOS/Steam in PC-MODE. I hopped from that to Minter's Moose Life, Space Giraffe and Gridrunner Revolution. Minter day indeed.
Im too ignorant of Jeff Minter stuff overall but I do remember a scrapped Gamecube game called Unity I was looking forward to back in the day. Is that on there, prey tell?
I agree Tempest 4000 is great and a worthy purchase on the vcs. It was the biggest reason I wanted a vcs, and decided to back it when it was crowd funded.

@@Atari7800Forever both but I prefer the modern. To me, the classics spin control needs tightened up. The revolution to go around a sphere, or whatever plain your playing on takes to much time to get from one end to the other. I catch myself having to reposition my forefinger and thumb sometimes just to get to that point.

I've loved Minter's games from way back, but it's a shame that they ommitted Tempest TxK and the Nuon Tempest 3K. Ah well - Fantastic review!!!
Is there any way to play Tempest 3k on an emulator? Is it unique enough to seek out on it's own, or is it pretty similar to 2000 and 4?
@@Atari7800ForeverThere's the Nuance emulator but it's very - very finicky, I gave up trying to get it to work. Is it worth getting the hardware, I'd have to say, with the current Nuon prices, especially the controllers, nope. The frame rate is all over the place, the resolution is low that everything at the bottom of the web is just kind of a blur. And the Nuon tech is so old, alot of the drives are failing. Tempest 3K is great, don't get me wrong, just not $500 give or take great, and honestly, that's about the only good game on that platform. The music is great, there is one more additional powerup - the automatic heat sinking missiles, and the web feels very organic, often weaving and shape shifting. The other thing I like is the lightening bolt level change - it did not have the "steer the cursor in the middle" for points, gotta say I'm not a big fan of that, instead, when you finish a level, you'd get a huge lightening strike effect, thunder, and instantly warp to the next level. Of them all, I think TxK is my favorite, I know 4K is based off of it, but it's got a different feel. I also really like the pc shareware clone "Typhoon" (2007) which works fine on current PC's.
