Range Testing Meshtastic Nodes (Point to Point)...
Here I walk around town and send messages to a client inside of my apartment. I have separated these nodes from any peers/mesh so we only have a point-to-point system.
I find a maximum non-LOS range of around 1.2miles!

In future videos I am going to build a repeated and redo the range test.

In this video, I show how I've taken my SDR-Pi police scanner from audible to textual with AWS Transcribe. The quality is not great yet, but I plan to improve it over time and eventually make something similar to Citizen at a smaller scale. The reference code is here: github.com/awslabs/amazon-transcribe-streaming-sdk/blob/develop/examples/simple_file.py

Building a $600 P25 Police Scanner for $250!!! (SDR-Pi)

Here is my latest weekend project; a Raspberry Pi 5 with an RTL-SDR dongle running SDRTrunk software. It is configured to listen to the local LAPD channels and runs great! The chip gets a bit hot so I think I need to add a fan.
Got it setup and running. Great system. How do I get the window to open up in the top right instead of the bottom left?
very impressive!
I think my comment was deleted because I included a link but if you're having audio issues where a talkgroup shows up in sdrtrunks left or right audio channel but you have no audio from the speakers you can fix it temporarily by going to user preferences and changing the audio to mono then back to stereo. A better fix is to switch to pipewire instead of pulseaudio. Unfortunately I can't link the guide I used to switch to pipewire and remove pulseaudio and there are a bunch of guides that didn't work for me until I found the one that worked but it's from a website with baeldung as the name.
Awesome news. I'm trying to build a PI5 head or headless (head [monitor] would be better for watching it) system that will SDRtrunk and then forward that audio to the input on a discord channel. I've seen Discord is available now for Pi, you answered the SDRtrunk portion, BUT, what could we use instead of Virtual Audio Cable (my windoze machines use this) to redirect the audio? Also will this setup handle 2 SDR's (CC+3VC)?
There is a guide on reddit in the discord subreddit to stream audio using pipewire to discord.
Very Cool little setup! One thing to know is for a Large busy system u will probably need 2 maybe 3 Rtl-Sdr dongles to Cover it. You will miss half the calls with just 1 Sdr alot of the time.
will this work on pi 3b plus
got it to work but was very laggy on a 32gb sd card
Going to build exactly this system but most likely will run 2x RTL-SDR instead of 1. Thanks so much for your video ive been wanting to get into this hobby live in los angeles but didnt want to spend the 600+$ for an SDS100/200 and i think this will work out perfectly for me and be much more fun.
🔥
I created a similar system with Faster Whisper on github. It can run completely locally on even a raspberry pi and depending on your computer specs, it is pretty damn accurate and fast for speech to text. I then use OpenAI LLM for the sentiment analysis portion which builds a daily report which my program then emails to me.
This is going to push departments to full-time encryption so fast. Really wish people would stop talking and showing this stuff. It's going to kill the hobby
My only issue so far is the screen doesn't allow to see all of the options, once you're inside sdrtrunk. Trying to come up with a solution. Otherwise, everything is working great! Thank you!!! Edit: I hooked my Pi up to a computer monitor and was able to resize the windows there and set up sdrtrunk how I needed, then moved back to the touch screen.
Hey, this could be super useful for my job. Would it be alright to e-mail you?
Yeah just added my email to the channel
Did anyone get the image to work?
Hi, I would love to help contribute to the development, and also to satisfy the needs that I have. I want to do this with the police scanner app, or scanning website. I like that you are using the RTL SDR dongles, but even with giant antennas, my basement apartment blocks almost all signals, even right next to a window. I pick up very staticy analog audio, and digital audio streams never pick up. If I can get an antenna outside, then I could make a setup similar to what you have, and decode additional talk groups to watch for things of interest, but since I rent, I really doubt that will happen. So my idea is, run the police scanner app / website in the background, that handles the police audio, then have the program constantly transcribing all the traffic, by saving 1 min audio files, of course there's going to be a small delay, but that's okay. I also want it to show on screen like you have, send me an alert for things that match my criteria, through something like MS Teams or Slack, which I know how to do. Then, additionally, play an aubile chime or message. That chime could just be a notification sound from that Slack/Teams channel or through Home Assistant which plays on my Google Homes. The reason why I want to do this is because I've been swatted quite a bit. It's not like I'm super popular or celebrity or anything, but I'm well known enough in my area and in my town, that I've been swatted several times, including a former employee who continues to try to call the police on me. I've been interested in this idea for quite some time, and I periodically search for police radio transcription options. There was another project I found that also used the Amazon library and one that used a Google library.
At this point though, why not just buy a dedicated tablet and running a radio scanner app?
I use a cellular router antenna with my rtl sdr blog v3 and it picks up the p25 system very well
I bought a uniden bcd436hp for 100 and sold it for 300 ! But yea I use sdr trunk to hear what's going on or my EF Johnson 5100es
I was wondering if you ever tested with a repeater node?
Hey! I'm actually building this now. Hope to start uploading videos again soon, that's the next video :)
What are these tiny keyboards called?
M5Stack CardKB
This is great idea any updates? or a step by of how this was done?
hey what kind of monitor/tablet do u have there?
Is booting from USB a requirement or can I boot from the SD card and use it to store the software?
how does it decrypt the digital signals to hear the good stuff.
It only decodes Digital signals that are not Encrypted
Trunking with just 1 sdr?
Totally interested in this and I'm hoping will be compatible with DSD+, I assume it would be as DSD+ has the same recording and output functions
Hi, Top DNG. I was wondering if your SDR-Pi was still working well. Mine was working very well for a couple of months and then last weekend suddenly it just went quiet. No control channel showing, and of course, no audio. Some folks from the SDRTrunk Facebook seemed to think it was the geomagnetic storms and to give it a couple of days to clear. Well, that was more than a week ago, and no improvement. I'm curious to know if you're having any issues?? Thanks. ~Frank
Compile it to windows version and you can take my money...
How much RAM does this require? I assume you would need the Pi5 with 8gb to run this?
I have a problem. I lose sound after 24 hours of leaving it running. You can see the calls coming in but no sound. If I restart it then I get my sound back for another 24 hours any one know how to fix this?
i did this but with just rtl-sdr server
The texts on screen are so small, it can't be read. The attention is too long on the same computer screen. Maybe shorten this up, take the boring parts out of it. Show a talking head in stead of text that can't be read. Add a puppy or a smiling baby or lower yourself and make a dance before the camera.
I'm having an issue after the last reboot i am stuck on just a blank screen it just shows a mouse and thats it, where did i go wrong?
I was just working on doing this myself so u saved me allot of work lol
You have my undivided attention. I've been contemplating making something like this for a while and your video gets me motivated. I would love to use a smaller display to match the foot print of the Rasp Pi. Is that a touchscreen with USB cable back to the Pi? or does that pop up go away on its own as the software loads right before you hear the dispatcher talking?
Great video!! Thank you so much I've been trying to get sdrtrunk to work on my pi for a while and your video is the first that worked.
Nice
Works great thank you very much. Is there any way to automatically connect to a Bluetooth audio source when powering on? Does the Raspberry Pi lite OS have all the necessary plugins for bluetooth?
Longest I gotten so far is 1.7mi
Hello. I have a question about your setup
Hello friend, through meshtastic is it possible with two heltec v3 cards one send a command to another turn on and off a relay?
Absolutely! There is some built in function to sound a buzzer when you get a message, you can connect this to a relay instead.
What about a case? Any cases that would fit all of this?
Does this setup require wifi (after the initial setup)? Or can it run in ‘the field’ just off of the radio frequencies? It looks perfect for part of an emergency comms setup.
No WiFi! Just RF :)
@@TopDNG thank you… Awesome set up!
try that in the uk all emergency and government services are encryped and have been for 30years
Get you antenna up higher and outside some how and you will increase the range
Do not start the device without antenna
Does the Hackrfone have the capability of decoding p25? Instead of the RTL you have there?
Yes this should work, but I haven't tried it. I do have a HackRF unit so maybe I can try it soon!
Cant get audio, even with the pulseaudio installed. Also cant scroll on the radioreference tab, so unable to make playlists.
is that running as root?
Way too much hassle not worth it especially to those who are computer illiterate so don't be building anything you're not experienced with
Ever since baofeng drop the UV-5RH. But I still dig this too.
Hello. Can sdr trunk run on some windows tablet example from aliexpress, i think it will be more simple and cheaper, but i didn find any viedeo on yuotube to prove it.
