Walter Becker - Couchriders In The Sky
I wish I'd heard this earlier
Ben Perowsky grooving solid.
Mr.Walter, your voice and songs have been a source of encouragement in all phases of my life.
Okay, so we have this character, Chalk Miller. "He played the favorites and he did okay," "He didn't fool with any longshot play" Chalk Miller was a regular guy who like to bet money on horse racing. He never went out of his comfort zone and betted high amounts of money and and go with any "longshot play" as he had no reason to, he was already doing fine. Chalk Miller didn't mind He didn't mind he didn't mind he didn't mind //He liked to bet a couple bucks on a nag // //Drink his winnings from a bottle in a bag// This again portrays Chalk Miller as a regular guy, as someone carefree, someone who didn't mind. He bet small sums of money on horse racing (not fooling with any longshot play) and when he won he spent that money on alcohol choosing to drink it in public inside a bag. Chalk Miller came home He came home he came home he came home Chalk Miller was alone He was alone he was alone he was alone he was alone //He knew the minute that he walked though the door// //His one and only didn't live there any more// Chalk Miller comes home one day, presumably from a day of betting. When he got there his partner has left however, and he was now alone. Jimmy Fish was a man Another man another man another man //He likes to take a little action now and then// //He likes to share his wise counsel with a friend// We are now introduces to Jimmy Fish. Jimmy Fish, like Chalk Miller, was a man. I assume that Jimmy Fish likes to gamble as well (likes to take a little action now and then) and shares ideas about the outcomes of the races with his friend. //Dark horse// //Coming up on the outside// //Dark horse// //At a hundred to one// //Dark horse// Nuthin short of a miracle Run like a bastard Dark horse run I am unsure of who Jimmy Fish is however. Just another gambler? A gambler with better luck than Chalk Miller? The bookie? The man Chalk Miller's wife left him for? I assume Jimmy Fish is the titular dark horse, the "unexpected winner" of this whole scenario. Chalk miller throws down He throws down he throws down he throws down //What the hell it will all be over soon// //I guess I might as well shoot for the moon// With his partner now left him, Chalk Miller has nothing to lose. He bets a high amount of money, something irregular for him to do, as he figures it all be over soon. //The kitchen table is a mess// //A couple minutes til post-time is his guess// //A cup of coffee and a half eaten roll// //A couple saw-tail guppies in a bowl// With his partner leaving him Chalk Miller is now untidy, his table unclean as he falls into a depression. The race that Chalk Miller has betted a high amount of money is now about to start with only a couple of minutes until post-time. //A travel book called "Bangkok and beyond"// //A Smith & Wesson that he pilfered from a blonde// Depending on the events of the race Chalk Miller's life could two ways. He could win a high amount of money, using this money he plans to travel and go on holiday using the book he has acquired "Bangkok and beyond". If he loses however, he will instead use the Smith & Wesson likely in an attempt to kill himself. This could be why Chalk Miller "was a man" as he is no longer alive.
Walter was brilliant
Walter Becker Forever 🎸🍸😎🙌🏼
Missing you dearly Walter. 😢
Never enjoyed listening to a horrible singer so much!...RIP,Mr Becker...
Absolutely incredible
Such poetry!
Ty for the share. He is missed
Seven years you’ve been away. Gone but never forgotten! Love ya, Walter.
Entrees of the everlasting man Thanks Walter RIP.
Forever cool.
Love that album. Walter had a heck of a voice.
When we get Grandma's number I think I'll just tell her Your boy's home for Christmas, it was a hell of a ride And I know some day you'll be showing me those blankets All covered in glory on the hereafter side Saying, "There was never any question" "It was always all or nothing" "Surf and/or die..." W-Becker

Cool 🙏 for posting
I wish I could back up a little in time, talk with Walter, and ask him how he wrote these things; where did they came from? Was he as broken as his lyrics, or just a master bullshitter? No matter the origin of these ideas, Walter always had his muse. It also makes me wonder, after hearing his solo works, where Becker ended, and Fagen began.
To think he's been the voice of Steely Dan all this time, and I had to reach later years to understand. Damn.
I’m picking up good vibe-rations 😂
Becker brought the blusey rock guitar edge to SD while Fagen brought the melodic smooth jazz ... A great combination 🎉
I was one of those lucky enough to be at that show. One of the great nights of my life. To this day, no one has ever done anything even remotely similar to what Steely Dan did. And Walter was criminally underrated. One of my favorite music makers of all time. I remember listening to interviews with the two of them back in the day and yeah, Donald had lots of interesting things to say, but it was always Walter who brought the understated subversive element, dropping epic one-liners that made me laugh out loud. Taking nothing away from Fagen, the man's a maestro, no doubt, but when they did their separate solo projects, it became really obvious which of the two was the main perpetrator of that trademark dark humor they were known for.
So sad he passed ..sure Donald is very heart 💜 broken, I've lost musical partners/ friends 😢
Wonderful pictures really, Keith, Jon Herrington with gold top Les Paul, DF, Walter with bass, cool beans
❤ あー 引き込まれる 美しい
I never heard this one-excellent
Man I know the credits say Adam Rogers did the guitar track here (and I'm talking about the finger strat style throughout) but is this correct?? Man, I could have sworn it was Dean Parks. I only say this because I've never heard Adam do any playing like this ever?? If I'm wrong here, just say so. One of the greatest tunes ever!! Oh and I must say, this track should have also been on the album!
❤😊
Is that his chart??
Listening to 11 Tracks of Whack, over and over in various situations daily. This Moody Bastard is my favorite song of many great songs on the album. I recently bought his final solo album, Circus Money, but do not want to move to it until I'm satiated with 11 Tracks of Whack! I understand his greatness much better after listening to this album.
This song is way cooler than most people realize.
Circus Money steers to a soul, reggae and bebop chart, lyrically it has a heartfelt feel mixed with Walt's natural sardonic and wonderfully visual reflective humour. Full of beautiful arrangements, stunning rhythmic changes and gorgeous backing vocals .. an absolute must ... go listen
Circus Money is a wonderful album, heartfelt and sardonic lyrics. Musically edging to more of a soul and reggae feel than the Dan. The rhythms are complex and intriguing and there's a strong bebop undercurrent .. if you haven't checked it out what are you waiting for?
Just pass threw these beautiful days of music makes ya wonder why it’s this way we’re all living in ystr yr or days of gone ,I suppose it’s true we all is getting old n friends are gone or empty so music of ystr yr takes us away from whoever is in chase or gone once again R.I.P. Walter n Thanks for your contribution to this day of mine 🎶🔗
Parking violation 😂 wow an old cassette in a Lexus
WANT TO BRING HIM BACK
Becker to Fagen on a pay phone: we were counting on you to add a little color.
RIP to the goat
Bad as fuck damn
The ghost of hipness past indeed, a snakey tumbling groove with master use of detune ... and the bop ... and sardonic wit ... exceptional talent ..
RIP WALT.....
The album version is one of the most gloriously inscrutable things I’ve ever heard.
ouch my ears, that knife-edge digital
4:53 The cameraman pans to a blonde in a dress. Perhaps she was wearing Ambush?
Dolophine is another name for Methadone. The lyrics posted with the video say Delophina but I thought it was the girl's name, Delphina. It makes sense.
I also cannot believe this tune did not make one of his albums
2300 listens over 2 years...what a shame....
I probably account for somewhere between 50-100 of those listens. Often, over and over and over again.
Quality over quantity? I’ve only listened 3 times but each time in a state of wonder and ecstasy.
Is there a possible addiction to all of this? If l don’t have a focus during my days, there is a constant SD, DF or WB masterpiece rolling along in my head, long may it last.
Killer solo at the end a flavour of Gold Teeth 2 played by Walter
