Decoding the Masters with Viktoria Majestic
США
Would you like to improve your paintings or just simply get a glimps into the process of recreating old master works?
It's been a centuries old tradition for art students to copy “old master paintings” to learn, and to improve their own work. In “Decoding the Masters” I will copy a selection of old master paintings and you are invited to watch as each piece unfolds.
My name is Viktoria Majestic I'm an award winning fine artist and art instructor.
The focus won't be on recreating an exact museum replica, rather on learning how each artist solved the problem of translating their subject onto the canvas, including sketching, color mixing, and simplifying.
I will paint still life, animals, portraits and landscapes after Isaac Levitan, Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, Rembrandt and others.
Copyrights: Copying paintings is legal, so long as the original work is in the public domain (meaning that the copyright on that work has expired).
Join me, and enjoy watching the process!

How to create 3D form with oil paint on canvas - master copy after Gyula Benczur master artist
In this session I show you how to create the illusion of 3D space and form on canvas. I paint a master study of Gyula Benczúr (1844-1920) Hungarian artist's work, the Re-ocupation of Buda detail.
Benczur was a master of his craft, he sculpted with paint on canvas, creating amazing works of art.
He achieved international success in 1870 when he won the Hungarian national competition for historical painting with his depiction of King Stephen's baptism.
He was named a Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, in 1875. In 1883, he returned to Hungary, where he continued to be an art teacher. One of his most distinguished pupils was the Swiss-born American painter Adolfo Müller-Ury. Benczúr...

Did you use any oil medium also or just a little solvent throughout?
I started out with a small amount of Gamsol mixed into the paint, and in consequent layers I used a 1:1 ratio of safflower oil and Gamsol.
I try to adhere to the "Fat over Lean Rule"
Good sense of values.
Really enjoyed watching and learning! This is the best video of explaining how to paint flowers and how values and drawing are so important in producing a beautiful painting!
This video is the best I have seen on accurate drawing and depth perception! The flowers and vase pop of the screen! Wonderful, beautiful work, I enjoyed so much!💗
Thank you for your comment! I appreciate it!
Just beautiful 💜 Thank you I really enjoyed watching and learning
Your welcome!
Excellent!
Jean Baptiste Camille Corot is my second favourite painter behind the great JMW Turner , thankyou for this video
Your welcome!
Missing your videos. Hope everything is good for you.
Thanks for reaching out. I've been abroad for most part of this year, but I'm planning to create new videos next year when I return to the States. I'm glad that you find my content to be useful.
Looking forward to them. Love your work and your lessons.
Beautiful
Thanks
Thank you Isabelle. I use safflower oil and Gamsol, which is a mineral spirit based artists solvent. Safflower oil is less yellowing, and slower drying than linseed oil.
I am always curious when oil painters leave paints out in piles, is it that with more volume of paint it stops it from drying out, or do you freshen it up with linseed oil? For me it seems to be pretty dry in small piles after even 24 hours, but I'm recognising a need to have paints ready to go instead of squeezing them out for each painting
It sounds strange that your oil paint dries so quickly, unless it's really hot were you are. I live in NC and it's pretty warm in the summer, but my paints stay ok for a couple of days in small piles. I use M Graham and Gamblin. Gamblin has linseed oil in it and it's pastier, so it dries faster. If you don't paint every day you can put your palette covered with plastic in the freezer. It will keep it fresh.
I'm glad you find them to be useful!
I have an original Carl Kenzler winter landscape which was handed down to me from my grandparents. I have not yet found this painting anywhere but it is original
Oh wow! That must be amazing. He was such a great artist!
I would love to find out its value. I found a similar one online. Yes, it's special
Unfortunately, I wouldn't know, I have no expertise in antique painting prices.
...it's far from being a study... it looks like any other promotion video... unfortunately...
Very nice
Merci !
Informative video, thank you. You may consider Corot used more earth colors: burnt sienna, yellow ochre real vermilion and viridian green as pthalo green wasn't available at the time, it is a 'modern' 20th century pigment.
Thank you. Yes, I'm familiar with the colors artists used in the past centuries however, I'm not trying to create an exact copy of their work, rather a loose study of the master works. Pthalo mixed with a small amount of white results in a color, that is almost an identical match to viridian. The reason I have Pthalo is it's intensity which allows a much wider range of mixtures than Viridian does. Burnt sienna, and yellow ochre are quickly and easily mixed from the three primary colors as I demonstrate it in many of my videos. Thank you for your observations, and for watching!
Thank you so much, interesting oil painting lesson ❤
Your welcome!
💞💯🎨🎨🎨
Thank you! If I may ask, would you perhaps consider a study on one of Ivan Shishkin's paintings, please?
Hi Jim, Absolutely! He is on my study list. I admire his beautiful work.
@@decodingthemasters That sounds great, thank you! I tried a study of his "Before The Storm" once and learned a lot from it.
Thank you so much to sharing all your experiences .
Your very welcome!
Amazing color mixing and brushwork that creates such a beautiful artwork.
Thank you :)
This channel is amazing. Very educational. Excellent tutorials. Do you print out the reference or do you look at a device like iPad or computer?
I'm so glad to hear that! I usually use a computer screen only. But I wish I could paint them from life in a museum 🙂
very VERY Jealous of your woodstove in the studio. ALso Incredible painting :)
Thank you. I do love my woodstove :)
it was beautiful 💕.
Thank you!!
Hello Viktoria. Much appreciation for these awesome lessons. Thank you. Good work. Karl
Your very welcome!
The best explanation. 👌👍.
Thank you!
Your welcome!
FANTASTIC VIDEO.! THANK YOU.!
Your welcome! I'm so glad you liked it!
Yes I did learn something new, the way to paint a complimentary colour over its compliment. And the sky, which can sometimes be the same but different. Lovely to see your work again Viktoria.
As always, I'm glad to hear that my demonstration is useful. Although I didn't focus on the complementary aspect of the core subject, great observation! Thank you for your constructive comment :)
Did you use pthalo blue also?
Only pthalo green.
Thank you Viktoria, I love the old landscape masters and I appreciate the way you approach the way they worked. I also don't wont to copy them just learn from them and paint my version of there way of seeing and interpret nature. I would like you to also look at some tonalist painters from the Hudson River school. ❣
Very nice tutorial…
Thank you!
Wonderful tutorial, and beautiful brushwork…
Thank you so much!
jordar!
...lapse...
wow, so nice; love your channel
I'm so glad to hear that! Thank you for letting me know! 😊
Thank you Victoria. Do you provide full length training videos for "Decoding the masters Series".
Your welcome! Not yet, but I'm planning full length videos for the future. Thanks for watching!
Thank you Viktoria, beautiful painting. I would like to have just dwelled on the finished work a little longer, but like you I was drawn into the light and darks to create the mood.
Thank you for your comment! I will pay attention to slow down the video and dedicate a little more time for the finished piece in my next demonstration! I appreciate your comment!
I love the way you do it. But would you please tell us which canvas are you using for your painting?
Glad to hear that you've enjoyed the demo. I'm using oil primed linen canvas by Centurion.
I love Monet Viktoria, that was a wonderful demonstration, interesting the varied colours used in water reflections and the concept of contrast in distant objects. Well done 👏
When life hands you lemons, go painting 🎨😂
That's a good one! 😁
