Amateur astronomer in Shreveport, Louisiana showing off views through an Orion XT8, a 4.5" Orion Autotracker, and possibly even video through binoculars. Lunar, planetary, and solar imaging is my primary focus, but I also record dash cam video with an Abeo HDVR-150.
Midland GXT1000 CTCSS Bug/Reset
There is a bug in the Midland GXT1000 where the CTCSS code cannot be turned off. Selecting oF from the menu should clear the added CTCSS privacy code, but it does not. Powering the radio off and on again restores the CTCSS code that was supposed to be removed. The only workaround I can find is to do a full reset by holding the up button while turning the radio on.

i play the benny hill music at the same time, it takes it to the next level.
What a lovely back garden you have to test your tent in :) fantastic video as well, thank you.
You did not loosen the screw on the secondary mirror. Orion did in their demo. Can you explain why or why not? Thanks.
Because all you need to do is pivot the mirror using the three hex screws so that it shifts/tilts the secondary where you need it to be. The center screw loosens the whole thing. You may only need to do that if you're really out of whack on alignment. The scope should not be that bad.
@@XT8Dob I am brand new to this activity so I did loosen mine and it did take time to get things back in order. I will try the question for their video.
where did you get the tape to put on it?
It has been years since I messed with the setting circle tape, but I simply found an online ruler and adjusted the image so that it would print to scale. I think I manually went in and typed numbers in by 10 degree increments. The hard part is getting your printer to actually print to the correct size and then tape each section together.
Very helpful thanks . Is there also a video how to rebuild it so that it mach back in the bag :D
omg u are a genius fond it 🤩🤩
🙏🙏🙏 Thankyou my friend
Helpful video. Just ordered one of these and it should arrive this week
Glad it helped. Other posters have recommended putting on the rainfly before lifting the poles. Just make sure to set the velcro vents to open or closed ahead of time.
This is how my coleman octagon 8. One man set up.pretty easy. ruclips.net/video/9pHbowrxxdE/видео.html
Do you think one of these would survive being erected on a camp site non stop for a few years if it was uv rainproofed occaisionally?
I'm not sure. One commenter below said gale force winds knocked it down. I don't have enough experience to tell you one way or the other. The frame is sturdy enough. The material is standard tent quality, which will probably its weak point.
I just watched your Midland Gxt1000 reset video and just wanted to say thanks for the video. I have had the same issue.
Neil from Art Attack?
Very clear 👍🏻 thank you 🙂
Awesome. I have watched you vid 3 time today. With your help I will master the art of putting this tent up in 15 minutes. I did see another vid where she put the rain fly on when it was still flat with all the poles in and ready to lift. I might try that too. It is coming in 2 days. Yipee!
I was born exactly at 4:07 April 13, 2012 this means a lot to me I hope you understand
Quality upload. Relaxing natural sounds with informative text. Enjoyable. Thank you & God bless
Its a blood or harvest moon tonite. Did you see it??😳👀
Couldn't have been. Those are only at full phases. We were still in waxing.
Really helpful thanks... unfortunately I now Know I couldn't pitch this in a wind. Also you need to be able to open and close the vents once it's up.
I'm glad you have this, but this irritates me so much that Android doesn't seem to have an equivalent to this
Very helpful thx
Please tell me you're a georgia boy!
Currently a Louisiana resident. Lived all over the place, including abroad, though. Never Georgia.
@@XT8Dob do you still use this tent?
@@KlikAndSeuss Been a while, but I still have it. Life happened. Still very glad I have this much room for astronomy gear/star party use.
@@XT8Dob awesome! Well let me be the one to encourage you to get back out into nature! Love your content!
I have an octago 8 too but the the support for the peep snapped! Where do we order replacements, might you know?
I believe Coleman sells pole replacement kits. Not sure if that would be what you need. Third parties offer replacement kits as well. The steel poles may be a different story.
What kind of camera was doing the video imaging?
In 2014, it was probably an iPhone 4S.
@@XT8Dob oh, that's pretty good for such a tiny sensor in low light.
perspectivex Saturn is pretty bright. In fact, I tend to dampen the brightness with a moon filter at the eyepiece.
Hi there, you were saying your xt8 secondary mirror is offset? I have an xt10 collimating with the cap, and everything is lined up right but the donut and center dot of the cap is offset. Is that normal?
Sounds right. Offset donut and center dot. See 5:48 or www.astro-baby.com/astrobaby/help/collimation-guide-newtonian-reflector/
*bought it for labor day weekend 2019. easy to put up, easy to take down>>> **nub.best/omxh** a little hard to fold up back into bag. so It stormed all weekend, and not a drop of water leaked through the bottom. it kept all our stuff dry and was great to have the full fly. roomy for a Queen size blow up bed and bag of clothes. never had to hunch over and could fully stand and stretch (in 5.2ft).*
good
*I recently used this tent for the first time at a music festival on top of a mountain in Wales.>>> **nub.best/mgfz** We had gale force winds which blew it flat more than once (with us inside it) and lashing rain of bibilical proportions for most of the 2 days we managed to stick it out and the tent stood up to all of it with aplomb. The only thing I would have liked to see improved would be more pegging points on the inner as I like to have them completely flat and with only the corners anchored that wasn't possible. The porch area isn't huge but we had a big box in with our gear and still enough room for us both to sit on camping chairs. Well pleased with this purchase.*
mind blast good to know
pretty cool
did you see an improvement?
Michael R. Head With the arrows? I discussed it on a forum. The terrain had more to do with it. Not an issue with the detector.
Great video, much appreciated. I made the decision to buy one of these scopes based on the images you show.
William Wilson The phone’s camera doesn’t quite do the image justice and larger aperture scopes certainly reveal more, but it’s a pleasing view nonetheless.
Can you use these on an SCT?
Nope. From what I've read, an SCT needs to be dealt with differently.
Perhaps after clipping a corner of the fly, tying a bit of rope to a loop and throwing the rope over the top to pull up from the opposite side. I really like this tent
Thanks for the video I really struggled to get this back in its case.
Amazing thank you so much!
Looks like a great tent. May be too much trouble for just a few nights of camping. I like it but, still undecided. Thanks for the video
I use it for camping out at star parties, so it helps to have the extra room for equipment. No point in being uncomfortable out there. It's nice to be able to stand up and not be restricted by having everything crammed in a small tent.
Where’s the electrical cord entrance? Seriously thinking about purchasing. Love the spacious area.
Brian Britton there’s a dark flap at the corner of the rigid door. See timestamp 17:49.
XT8Dob thank you
@@XT8Dob I can't find any entrance in or around that dark flap...
@@simonlee8889 I’m not sure what to tell you. Mine has it. Make sure it’s the right door. The flap opens up to allow passage of a cord. See the time stamped point in the video.
@@XT8Dob My 'dark flap' is a piece of black plastic and I have looked both in and all around it and there's no way any of it opens up or is covering some small entrance... perhaps this is an innovation to make the hinge more durable?
I am considering buying this tent but now I am concerned about getting that fly-sheet over the frame. If it is windy it looks like it might be an impossible task to complete alone, and my wife is quite short so can't really help reach up high to throw it over the frame either. I can just imagine us on a windy day going around this tent 5 times getting more and more irritated! Any insight from people who have bought it on this possible issue? Thanks for the video OP, I had only watched the Coleman marketing vid for this tent but now I see more of the potential in it (and potential issues).
Daijyobanai One suggestion has been to drape the rainfly over before raising the tent. It’s doable.
It is not as difficult as this video makes it look. I am 5ft 7 and manage fine on my own. It helps if you either put it over before you stand the whole thing up (I always forget until after its stood up) or have a good throwing arm, your wife can stand the other side and catch a corner.
Very cool, I have never had much luck with a phone which why I now own like a gazillion planet cams. I did actually buy a phone holder recently see if that helps me. Wanna post some phone astronomy videos to my channel, if the couds ever go away.
Charlie Golden The cradles help me a ton. The wobble in the video was from me tapping the phone to start recording. I usually use the button on my headphones to prevent the shake. The difficulty with the moon is how the exposure rockets up along the edge. You have to tap the bright spot and hold so the phone autofocuses and stays at the desired setting.
Hope i get to try soo, I have a couple new scopes, mounts, cameras, adapters and all kinds of stuff I have never been able to use. Have not been able to make videos in a while. Weather has been terrible
Thanks for the video but did you leave out some steps? How did you get it so flat right before folding? Also is the key to leave the tent staked in right before folding to keep the octagon shape? I'm still having a hard time even after watching this :(
Didn't leave out steps. Photographed each moment before/after making the fold. Maybe I pushed air out in the process of folding, but that's all I can think of. I do keep half of the tent staked opposite from where I'm folding from so I can pull it taut. Not necessary, but it helps. Also good to keep it staked in spots if there is wind.
thanks again for the video.. i finally got it stuffed in, but its not as pretty as your folding job. its a very tight fit, but its in there!
I will say that at this point, my tent does go in a little snug. The ends are a tad asymmetrical. Tends to happen with lots of tents, though.
I must say i tried to follow this as well and at the moment the bag of poles are not in the main bag as i could not get everything else in with the poles. Always the case they make the bag big enough for professional folders and baggers
All I can recommend is to squeeze all the air out of the tent as you fold and try to remember the length of the bag as you're folding. You can get away with a little bulk if you make up for it at the ends.
Hi there Thank you so much for sharing this amazing video. I'm planning to buy the same telescope for photographing the moon, but I'm a bit afraid that it won't get close enough to the moon to show the craters. So is the shot at 2:54 cropped later in the computer or is it a real visual of the moon without cropping? I really need your help in this because I might buy after your reply. Thanks Faisal
Great mood video with the night sounds. Did you kill the moskito?
Thanks. I don't believe I did. Mosquitoes tend to hover around the light from the phone while I shoot video. I usually run a Thermacell repellent and spray myself with Off. Probably didn't fire up the Thermacell that night.
Very encouraging. I am just a novice at this and need just a little more detail about the setting circle. Is this 360 hash marks for the total 29.4" to get degrees? you set at 0 degrees and latitude for north star for reference, I get, start tracker, then back to your original to track. Is the latitude marking on the mount already or is this also something you need to add? This would be great for the upcoming eclipse and considering getting it for this. Also planning on using a camera and on board system for shutter release (Canon EOS). Do you have any experience with this? Can you give slightly more detail for a first timer or direct me to something/somewhere for help? Thanks
YES. 29.4 inches for the 360 degree setting circle. The latitude markings are built in to this particular scope because it requires that you align to your local latitude using those hash marks for anything to track reliably.
How did you set up the 360 degree hashmarks? Is there a simple way on my computer to make this, print and laminate and transfer to the mount?
I searched for a ticker tape image that I liked and did a bit of editing in Photoshop to fix problems with the right length. Scaling images to correct print sizes can be problematic. I printed mine out in vertical sections.
Thanks so much! This helped A LOT! I already knew how to get to the part with the colored pencils, but was confused when my screen did not have that colored tint when I clicked on one of the pencils. Now I see that you have to go to the bottom to 'Color Tint' and customize it yourself. :D
Yeah. That extra step matters, doesn't it? Hopefully, Apple won't make too many changes to this process in later versions of iOS.
Yeah
Very helpful video, thank you! Didn't think one person could do it without straining the poles, but this is a great method.
I have heard that you can directly control and add GoTo to this mount without a hand controller using the serial adapter cable and an App on your phone like SkySafari. Have you tried this yet, or know if it will work?
Haven't tried. I have the same question. Answers point to needing the hand controller to deal with the signal through the cable for it to work correctly. I couldn't find anyone with an Orion hand controller or the SkySafari connection to even test either option out.
The Orion model is the same as the Skywatcher Virtuoso. I have read some forum threads of people doing it with them. I am still researching before I buy the cable from Skywire
I'm heavily invested in SkySafari Pro, so I could definitely put it to use on this mount. The thing is, my mind is my go-to. I'm very good at finding objects and remembering where they are. I'd only use a SkySafari setup if I were doing outreach or just messing around.
You're the only other person I have spoken to who owns this mount as well. I was just looking for a cheaper option than the $350 hand controller. I couldn't find any of them used either
you sir, are a hero. Thanks for posting this. Made my first setup of this tent a breeze! Now, please post one for how to get it all back in the tent bag :)
I already have, except it's only a video of still frames from the photos I took of the original unfolding of the tent.
I just got my auto tracker mount today. Haven't messed with it yet. I know the tracking is set for stars. How long does it keep planets and the moon in view?
If you are level and aligned to Polaris at the start, it should keep things in view for the full 30 minutes before the auto shutoff kicks in. The unit stops tracking at that point to conserve battery power. If you are slightly off, whether not level or Polaris was slightly off center, things will drift out of the field a lot faster. It all depends on how well you set up the autotracker. It helps to have the tripod.
XT8Dob I know I wasn't 100% level and it was kind of cloudy, I couldn't see Polaris, so I just used a compass to get myself pointed north. Objects like the Moon and Saturn would only stay in view for about 2 minutes. I assume the setup needs to be much more precise than how I had it
D Costello I've learned to level the base on the tripod before adding the optical tube so I can look at the bubble from directly overhead. I've made a custom ticker tape setting circle to fit the circumference of the base to deal with times when I can't see Polaris. Leveled with a rough estimate of 0 North and your latitude gets a good tracking going. Also make sure you've properly set your latitude first. Once set, you only have to do that again when you travel or replace batteries.
Thank you for posting this. It helped!
Do you think 6 adults would fit in this tent?
I think it would be a bit crowded with six. I needed the room for the gear I take to star parties. If comfort is a priority, five at the max I'd say.
Do you think 6 adults would fit in this tent?
ruclips.net/video/9pHbowrxxdE/видео.html
Yes, great video. I too am awaiting my tent to arrive, but after watching your video, it's like I have already set it up before. Thanks for taking the time to do the video, as well as not polluting it with background noise (busy music).
Wow! Is that noise the gears on the AutoTracker mount?
+IndyAries Nope. Bugs.
