North and South was popular outside the US, too - especially in Germany. It became one of the greatest successes of mini-series on German television and was HEAVILY popular. It actually has been heavily popular in Germany ever since. Many Germans know the series and will recognise its main title when played. The title "North and South" however was changed for the series's German version. Here it went with the title "Fackeln im Sturm", which translates to "Torches in the Storm" and is metaphorical: George and Orry are the torches, that are endangered to go out in the midst of a raving storm, that is clearly the civil war.

2024 and this, to this day, remains one of the most beautiful themes to any series. The series itself was, and is still a masterpiece! It was what got me hooked on The Civil War, and I still watch it a few times a year ❤️

The miniseries was a preposterous conglomeration of somewhat reinvented history, no consideration of material cultures of the time, and an allegiance to 1980s hairstyles-and I loved it with a passion. And the theme song can make me cry with the first note.

Wild guess, but I wonder if this could be by Johann Anton Andre, who wrote a concert ending for Mozart's Abduction from the Seraglio overture? That overture, in Andre's version, was first published in 1807, and this was published in 1806.

This is wonderful music, difficult and beautifully delivered by the orchestra. The concertmaster looks a bit like Paavo Järvi 😉

When I was little, the North and South intro would come on which would signal it being my bedtime. However, I also begged my parents to allow me to at least watch the intro and listen to the music. It was this theme song that started my path down a love and interest in orchestral music and I feel blessed to have had that experience.

I bet this sounded awesome actually being there. As a metalhead and bedroom guitar player when I watch professional players like these people I just admire them for their dedication and playing. Idk if this is small for a symphony group but their sound is huge.
