My goats are livestock, and although I care for them deeply, they are not pets and do not live in my yard. Not only would I not have enough space for them to have the freedom they deserve, but the ranch they live at down the road they are the happiest with a big barn and 5 acres of pasture to browse. At the ranch they get checked on every day usually by me or by the owners of the property who live right there. I prefer to raise my herd this way which works best for me 😊

Her legacy will live on through her many beautiful kids she has gifted over the years😊 I’m glad I was able to spend these last moments with her, and have done everything I possibly could to try and save her. Luckily her 3 kids are healthy and well, and shouldn’t have any issues with parasites themselves. However it will be wise to keep close tabs on that being a potential issue since it was with their dam in her older years. Thank you for watching :)

Words like these is what keeps me going, as raising animals sure never comes easy :) I am grateful for what this situation with Divine taught me, and that I was able to care for her and give her the best chance possible, as well as for her gift of three beautiful healthy kids! I do have 2 daughters of hers that will continue her legacy 🤗

All the baby goats received selenium at birth and as you can tell from the video the legs did straighten just fine after a week or so from the fact I did give selenium. Extra selenium was even administered to the dam prior to kidding.

We tried to bring her kids back and she tried to head butt them away and injure them with her horns.

I worked with my veterinarian and ran a lot of tests that showed her organs shutting down due to a very large parasite load. I encourage you to do some more research, especially on the Kiko goat breed, but the goal is to never have to deworm a goat, or at least very rarely, and instead breed for goats that can stay healthy and withstand the parasites without getting sick. This was a case with an older doe carrying quads so her body was unable to fight off the parasites as easily- but prior to this she had never had any issues or ever needed a dewormer in her entire life and stayed perfectly healthy. Deworming goats too often can result in dewormer resistance, causing them to stop working at all over time, so unless you have very parasitic goats and are working with a vet on a strict deworming schedule, deworming 2-3 times per year is not ideal.

I do have cameras set up and they did have someone checking on them every day. They do very well with me coming every other day and things happen that I can certainly learn from but many times are unpreventable than me doing the best I can. I’m already aware of how unfortunate this situation was and I know how to take care of my animals and even work with a veterinarian. I can always do better 😊

Think before you type. Ask if she had help with the animals or has cameras. Maybe listen to the video of how she has had help.

The kids should not be dewormed till they are at least 3 weeks of age. And chemical dewormers should only be used if a goat is showing symptoms of parasites. Thanks for watching

@@silverpinekikogoats sounds like u might need to go over the check points a little more frequently. Especially on your bread girls. To weight until there down is too late. Glad to hear u are always learning. It’s when people don’t learn from mistakes that there is real problems. Sorry for ur loss. Glad u tried it got u three kids u otherwise wouldn’t have. Trying is always better than giving up. ❤

She never even showed any symptoms until she was down and seemed perfectly healthy up until that point. Thank for your words of encouragement. The discouraging outcome was unfortunate considering her progress and all I did on my part over a months time, but lessons can always be learned from experiences such as these and I am so very grateful for her gift of three healthy kids.

@@silverpinekikogoats yes I understand it would be easy to assume she is one that is more resistant sense she hasn’t had any trouble before now. They seem to think resistance is inherited so u might keep that in mind if ur going to keep her girls. Just might keep a close eye on them through out there years. I’m not positive they have this stuff figured out yet on who will and who won’t get worms. Makes it hard for us to. just need to develop a routine and stick to it on checkpoints. It is so great to connect with other goat people who have been through similar experiences! It definitely isn’t always easy. Unfortunately I did end up losing Divine after a long fight, but I’m grateful for what she taught me as a goat owner and for her gift of three healthy kids 🤗

After navigating the issue with a vet, I was basically told that the parasites would unfortunately be an ongoing issue due to the area I live in, so the best thing I can do is to just keep the strongest ones. Divine lived a long happy life and was an amazing mama! Hopefully I don’t have to go through any more similar issues.

I purchased the start of my herd from a registered Kiko goats breeder, but I breed my own goats now. I don’t personally use them for milk or meat, they are breeding stock and I sell the kids ;)
