How many world leaders has Oldman played now?
To think that Gary Oldman played both Roosevelt and Churchill
"Womp womp, i would drop the 3rd one on Kyoto" -Harry Truman
Now we need him to play FDR and/or Stalin.
If you really think about it, his blood on his hands is so minimal compared to any US president, it's no shock that Truman felt this way
The Handkerchief...White Dove and/or perhaps an angel...The Handkerchief. |He brought it back| Every great magic trick consists of three parts or acts. The first part is called "The Pledge". The magician shows you something ordinary: a deck of cards, a bird or a man. He shows you this object. Perhaps he asks you to inspect it to see if it is indeed real, unaltered, normal. But of course...it probably isn't. The second act is called "The Turn". The magician takes the ordinary something and makes it do something extraordinary. Now you're looking for the secret... but you won't find it, because of course you're not really looking. You don't really want to know. You want to be fooled. But you wouldn't clap yet. Because making something disappear isn't enough; you have to bring it back. That's why every magic trick has a third act, the hardest part, the part we call "The Prestige". ~WikiQuotes: The Prestige
What is the background music in this its so dreamy and lovely
"Destroyer of Worlds" by Ludwig Göransson
This conversation really did happen, and it infuriated Truman. That someone else would come to him, the man who ordered the bombs be dropped, and be upset that they felt responsible.
Imagine how suprised they were when they learned that all the years of studying the atom, turns out they were wrong.

He should have said " EVERYONE "!!
Once again a role is playing Gary Oldman😊
I think people are hard on Truman, but I see it less him being an immoral politician and more an old-fashioned type of man who viewed introspection and guilt as a luxury - ESPECIALLY after such a terrible war, with so much death. He wasn't evil, he just didn't have time for it when there were real problems beyond one man's moral quibbles.
I like your reflection but I still think he was an evil criminal motherfucker.
He saw the atrocity of WW1 beforehand. And the cruelty of the Imperial Japanese army was legendary. People need to remember the existence of Unit 731, as well as the rape of Nanking and the Fall of Hong Kong and Singapore. The Japanese were pretty determined to keep the war going to fuel their own imperialist smbition, and its something they still have not fully apologized for
@@timetochronicleSo two wrongs make a right now?
@@mohamedalahmadani5174 War itself is an unfortunate event that sadly happens. It's hard to find a "morally" acceptable reason whether your the attacker or defender when so many lives end up dying in the crossfire. No one is taking pride in the fact nukes were dropped but fact is, it did discourage them from continuing the war they were so hellbent on doing and possibly saved more lives in the long run.

Truman was wrong here
So does oppenheimer
I can understand why Truman hated him. you have Oppenheimer saying he has blood on his hands for building the bomb but Trueman is pissed because HE had to make the decision to order the Bomb to be dropped killing 120,000 human lives so its easy to understand why Trueman said "Don't let that Crybaby scientist in my office again". the other reason Trueman was upset and pissed was allso because like it ot not HISTORICALLY The bombing of Hiroshima was Justified as horrific as it was becuse in the end it spaired millions of more casualties on both sides. If it had not been dropped another 2 million pus lives would have been lost in a single invasion alone (Mostly Japanese Civilians) and Japan would have continued to attempt its Imperial Expansion across Ashia which had already Killed or displaced millions. Unlike The Germans the Japanese showed no signs of Surrendering and the Americans Had Info to back this up. Had the bombs not been dropped the Carnage would have continued for several more years possibly into the early 50's according to some historians killing millions more on all sides. In truth the Bombing of Dresden was a More Vicious and Sickening act Because Unlike Japan the Allies knew when they bombed Dresden That Germany was On the Verge of Surrender but they seemed to bomb it in retaliation for London (which by comparison saw fewer bombings) or for plain shits and giggles. Dresden was not a Major Industrial City and had no Armories or large quantities of Military personnel there. Dresden's pre war population was 630,000 People had doubled with Peasant Civilian Refugees from Silesia Fleeing the Communist Red Armie in there homeland, Dresden was Large a Arts and Culture City It was Hailed as one of the Most beautiful cities in the world. All of this and The Allie Knowledge Germany was soon to Surrender and yet they drop a firestorm of bombs in the middle of the night killing 135,000-140,000 men women and Children pretty much Melting and burning them alive while they slept !That I feel Should weigh more on American and British Harts than The bombs dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima which although killed over 100,000 lives in a horrible and barbaric way, in the end saved millions more and brought a Delusional Emperor and Selfish Ruling class willing to Sacrifice their entire Nation and let there own Subjects INTENSLY farther rather than just Surrender honorably and admit they lost but put up a good fight.
Cold as hell. great performance by oldman
Explain Downfall to Oppie…….wouldn’t be crying anymore
Very ruthless response but powerful. In what world can an adult say to another adult “i have blood on my hands”. It’s a very self involved thing to say a child would say. Truman can’t be expected to console him given it was his policy decision that he himself needs to live with.
He was fine with his descion
@@hannahdyson7129 Truman believed his choice was better than the alternative, an invasion or the continuation of firebombing (which killed more people in Tokyo than Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined). However, that didn’t mean he was 100% happy and did not take time to think it over.
@@thenablade858 Operation Downfall was a plan over a long military tactic in surmounting an invasion that would caused millions of loss on both sides. Truman is kind of aware of Japan extreme ideology. The military powers have a tight grip on the nation. Look at Okinawa, the entire island population went insane as all of them goes on suicide attacks with bombs strapped on their body, Okinawa was a bloody mess that the US military and politics were horrified from the situation they read about. One way or another. The use of atomic bombs were necessary to push Japan to surrender. With the approaching Red Army tide of the Soviet Union over Manchuria. Japan and the Emperor being known of the dire situation knows that the structure and culture of his homeland would be reduced to rubbles. Especially against the Soviet.
@@rogueascendant6611 You say that the bombs were necessary, then say that Japan was going to lose anyway against the Soviets. Which is it?
@JimmySteller Both factors. While US did created a dozen nukes in the following days and months since the success of the Manhattan Project. They weren't keen in deploying every nukes on the island. This would have extreme and dire consequences towards the global society. America was not interested of itself to be painted as the devil incarnate upon the Earth. Emperor Hirohito only get fragmented info regarding what happened to Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Not being help by military officials that want to keep everything strictly limited of news even to their own Emperor. When the Soviet finally made a move that overruns Japanese-occupied Manchuria. This news were passed and the Emperor was leaning of a surrender to the Americans than the Reds. He and others were aware how devastating the Soviet would do if they gained a foothold in Japan. Their culture, tradition, and history scorched and ruins. The nukes accelerated the process. There was some attempt coup from a bunch of warmongers. But was foiled and the Emperor send the news of laying down their arms to the Americans.
What I learned from this movie is 1.fear of being taken advantage of 2.fear of the unknown 3.fear of the future The United States fears that Russia or Germany will build this weapon…”as an exploitation that is harmful to the world” first. Finally, today, nuclear bombs have become something that “brings peace from the fear of uncertainty in human's minds.”
Oldman stole the whole movie with this scene. 😂😂
This was one of the best scenes in the entire movie just because Gary Oldman is so awesome.
If Truman didn’t have crybaby make the bomb we all wouldn’t be were
He was a crybaby. Truman called it.
Brother built a bomb that killed 200 thousand innocent people…Expressing remorse for that is an admirable quality, showed he still had a soul
@@MasonOfLife "my jap killer 9000 bomb killed people? I've got blood on my hands..."
Yes, Oppenheimer was self-centred (especially since it was Truman’s administration who was responsible), but he still built the weapon which is partially why he felt guilty.

This portrayal is so profound that they should do a Truman biopic with Gary Oldman staring.
As a sequel to Oppenheimer, they should do "Truman" as the next film, focus on his sudden succeeding Roosevelt, his decision in dropping a bomb, cold war, sacking MacArthur, etc
There’s already a Truman movie starring Gary Sinise.
Imagine what kind of opinion we have in Europe about Truman..... If we have thousands of Atomic bombs or H bombs on this Planet because of people like him. A cruel person voted as President.
@@Galm1a new one could be better, like the original movie about the manHartman project with Paul Newman and John Cusack was good but obviously this blows it out of the water, a Truman movie would be amazing!
There is a biography by David McCullough that is interesting. I think biographies (Like American Prometheus, which this film is based on) are often more interesting than biopics due to the fact that films have to shove in a lot of information in a short timeframe.

I am now reading a fabulous book “The Accidental President” - about Truman, of course - and I came back to this scene to rewatch it and align my perception. And it doesn’t connect, the historic person in the book and Oldman’s character… I think Truman was more lowkey than that. More respectful or something. This guy, he comes off as quite an asshole… I don’t know, what do you think? The book is highly recommended, btw, what a life story.
So I read this encounter actually happened, and Truman was appalled by Oppenheimer narcissism. Truman later said , “he doesn’t have nearly the blood on his hands as I do”. Truman had to make the decision, the agony of the war and live with it. Only now Oppenheimer is crying about it?
