Dennis Marks (1948-2015) was a writer, broadcaster and film maker who spent many years in television, the performing arts and journalism. He was also a persistent traveller with an interest in the culture and history of lands as diverse as Eastern Europe, Russia, West Africa and Central America.
Over the years he was a BBC television executive, the general director of English National Opera and with friends and colleagues he founded two independent production companies. He made six films with Michael Frayn, three major radio series, and wrote two books, on Joseph Roth and an introduction to Opera.
On this channel, dedicated to his work, you will find a selection of his films and radio programmes. Some of the series, such as 'All the Russias', include films by his colleagues, who have kindly given their agreement for their presentation here.

Nice way to say why they filmed Amadeus in Prague, but the reality was the cost to make it in Vienna would have been 10 times more.
The best ever, thank you Dennis
What a gentle and talented Broadcaster and film-maker Dennis Marks. The Search for Sepharad, is one of the best ever broadcast. He will be missing always

I don't know what strange algorithm brought me to this, but I'm glad that it did. A fine documentary, which manages to convey a great deal about the emotional lives of the long-dead without claiming to dispel the mystery. I loved the filming; and Ian Bostridge is obviously a national treasure. Many thanks for posting this.

Meine lieblinge Stadt.
Thoroughly depressing. Anyone who wants to go back to those dark days needs their head examining.
Well done, Dennis a very interesting story if you want to hear Yiddish go for a trip to Stamford Hill you won’t be disappointed

My great great grandparent's lived on Castle Ally. The murder of Alice Mackenzie was outside of their flat.

Super
very good, very unusual
The way he managed to pull and bring forth the precise harmonic sounds he desired from his musicians, much reminds me the condicting mastery of a Fürtwangler.
Vienna has changed a whole lot since 1977.
Better than most documentaries, this is excellent! Wow, thanks for uploading. Cheers from Alabama
Wunderbar. This is gorgeous , preposterous and thought provoking .All the qualities that Vienna comprises, nourishes and exemplifies and yet also contradicts. A beautiful and erudite documentary that seeks to inform and encourage further enquiry rather than to shock or belittle.

Excellent and informative, from times before the BBC was dumbed down and destructive.
Background music should stay in the background!
Reading Musil now: fantastic!
The Modern Ghan is a premium expensive cruise ship in comparison
A very important and interesting documentary, sadly ruined by unbearably loud music (& yes I was sporting headphones). 😒
Charming. I realised afterwards that the private clinic where I had a scan was where it was sited. I did wonder what used to be there in the past anyway because it’s almost small back roads and rounding a corner a small hospital.
Yikes. Poor UK. Culture vanishing even then. Not saying it's just as bad here in the US, but the UK is the size of one state here. :(
Jog on Dick!
A sh1thole then and a sh1thole today, and the music is awful, can't watch anymore.
Depressing…worshipping ego and man made culture instead of goodness and real beauty such as nature and science.
Quite an enlightenment "age of reason" critique.

The range and subtlety of this puts modern documentaries to shame. You have to work to keep up. So much better than the current “Join me on my exciting quest to…” blah blah blah. “The Shock of the New” is also great and of the same era.
The ancestors are wise thank u so much for this master piece Moore Dagbang kingdom to the world.
What year was this made? Looks like the early 80s.
1977 in the last credit
若き日のマエストロの指揮姿を拝めて大変興味深かった。「ワルキューレの騎行」に乗って突然日本公演のシーンになったのでびっくりしたw マエストロは現在の日本においても深い敬愛の対象です。
My great great grandfather was a policeman there at the time of the ripper.
Mravinsky is my favorite conductor, his videos inspire me more than anything else. Is there somewhere that I could purchase DVDs of his conducting? I am not sure where to look.
How old is this documentary?
Looks like it’s from the 70’s
found this by reading "the sound of rebellion" by peter kemper , germany reclam 2023, page 161
I really enjoyed this. Far from typical blues documentary. Great to see Charles Brown and Joe Liggins in particular.

where are these images from? Is it West Africa?
Fascinating different Yiddish dialects. Some Galician i belive and the last two more Germanic. ❤
The legendary Nana Kwame Ampadu and Agya Koo Nimo. Nana has gone to be with the Lord last year, but Koo Nimo is still alive. Thank you for keep these Ghanaian legends alive.
