Dr. Tania, what is the product of mix 3-ethylcyclohexanecarboxylic acid react swith thionylchloride/triethylamine? I have tried with SMILES but it doesn't give me product. Thanks very much!
Hello! Thionyl chloride, SOCl2, makes acid chlorides, RCOOCl, from carboxylic acids. Acid chlorides are very reactive. For example, RCOOcl reacts with alcohols to form esters; with ammonia, and primary and secondary amines to make amides. A tertiary amine such as triethylamine or pyridine neutralizes the HCl co-product in these reactions.

so, what is the significance of this resonance energy? If I supply this energy what would happen to the end products? would they dehydrogenate? Does this have anything to do with the resonance frequency of a molecule?
By the difference in the heat released in the hydrogenation reaction, you can determine that one system is more stable than another. The hydrogenation reaction is exothermic. Considering the hypothetical molecule "cyclo hexatriene", with three localized double bonds, the amount of heat released should be 3 times the heat of hydrogenation of cyclohexane. It is not the case; experimentally the heat of hydrogenation of benzene is less. The difference is the resonance energy. In other words, because of electron delocalization in the conjugated system, benzene is more stable than the localized model, cyclohexatriene.
