Just for reference purposes, my 2020 X5 has the same issue. Only 50k miles too. Dealer just quoted me $3400(8/21/24). Obviously I did not approve the repair. Disappointed in this car for years now. Have had so many BMW's since 1994 and I never seen so many issues as I have on this car. It's mind boggling. My X5 has the air suspension and it has been making a loud creaking sound since new. I guess the lower suspension arms need to be greased. But every time I take the car for service they say they can't reproduce the sound. Yet it does it every day for 4 years. And if you google it, it's so common yet the dealer couldn't reproduce the sound. But it went in squeaking and came out squeaking on 5 different occasions while at the dealer. Also, the AC went out under warranty too. Took 3+ weeks to fix it. Apparently its a $5k job, good thing it happened under warranty.

Where did you order your new starter from?

The only explanation for the different drain plug is that the last person who changed the fluid cracked the case. It could be a hairline crack. When that happens, the only option is to adapt a bigger drain plug or change the cover. As long as there’s no leaks, there’s nothing to worry about.

@@1000raulm thanks, that makes sense, I checked it after a week of driving an no leak. 🤞

Yes Sir! Took a thermometer to the air vents and it is within factory spec now.

Good job overall. Your oil looks very clean actually…. I cringed a little bit when I saw you torquing the plugs. The plug is tapered and torque is perfunctory, which means the same applied torque will introduce uncontrolled force into the plug hole. This is how I cracked mine. I think you are OK with magnetic plug, but these transfer cases drain area is very weak (aluminum). Tightening by hand and 2 or 3 turns will do.

Thanks for the feedback, I had the same fear as I started to torque the drain plug, I was not quite getting the 15Nm and it felt like a lot of torque for an aluminum housing that is why I stopped it a little early and certainly the fill plug (allen key with no head on it), I stopped once I got about 4 or 5 of the thread locked threads in (i.e. I did not wait for my torque wrench to beep at 15Nm).
