Irlam Live 2024 and Winter Warmer Updates
Those days went perfect but they were better than today. I think that's an early 1960 original Ford Capri not a Vauxhall.
What's the Salford connection to Gallipoli? The Newfoundland Regiment had its first deployment there. I love finding connections to my people here.
Hi. I'm going to make a video in Weaste Cemetery in the next week or two. It's not about the cemetery as such, more about an air raid siren, and I guess you can see the connection. If you want to join in and have a say on camera, let me know so we can arrange it. The date and time is flexible. Cheers
Kicked my football against the depot wall about a million times as a kid in the late 80s.
The book stall was run by Harry Waterson, later he moved to the new market area next to the precinct and was succeeded by his son Ian.
So glad the Gene Vincent/Eddie Cochrane book was completed as Ray wrote about working on it in a letter to me and I assumed it was unfinished when he died. I also have a letter he wrote to his uncle, my father, where he talks about going on a tour of America with a band, presumably the Clash tour. Nice to see how Sam has grown up, I remember meeting him when he was a small child and have a photo somewhere.
My dad drove the number 15 out of this depot in the early 60's. Worsley to Piccadilly. My uncle George was his conductor.
thoroughly enjoyed that thanks
I used to drink there, now and again, and remember it wasn't very big and they had lots of games you could play like Connect 4 and draughts and chess etc. They served a good pint of bitter as well
My husband was from Salford, rest his soul. We had many a pub crawl back in the day. I stopped going over after he passed away late 1980’s, but had to go Salford royal hospital for an appointment. Couldn’t believe how much it’d changed. Pubs all shut, boarded up. Converted to flats. Roads blocked off, one way traffic and unfamiliar looking people everywhere. Still as bleak as ever !
Had my first pint in the Langworthy pub. Chesters Mild as I recall.
Will definitely come to the Cornerstone to have a look, local history is so important for prosperity, pity there isn't more interest shown on here , I worry about the heart and spirit of Salford. I have lived round here for nearly 40 years, before that Lower Broughton, I can see the Cornerstone from my house. I remember it as Langworthy clinic. Langworthy Road was busy back in 1986, good memories, I lived in Harmsworth Street initially, now it has new housing built on the land and I am happy to say they have chosen to give it its former name of Harmsworth Street. Seedley and Langworthy schools all gone now just photographs left to remind us of their existence. I am not negative of the changes I have seen in my area over the time I have lived here just very aware of the changes.
Do you tell people the names of the ones you have just added. Please 🙏 x
Fascinating story told by genuine historians without ego many thanks Tony et al. Interestingly Edward Langworthy worth 680 Million pounds in 1840 I calculate is equivalent to 128 k today (Inflation) An incredibly wealthy man indeed which begs the question why is Salford/Eccles such a disgrace today? Various self serving incompetent low grade councils I guess. I had cause to visit the Cornerstone for the first time last year (Diabetes Eye Check) a wonderful unique atmosphere which quite took me aback, such kindness, the staff and visitors made me very welcome, sadly in their 'wisdom' the authority have moved this facility to Timbuctoo to far for me so sadly I sacked it. Typical! I was looking forward to my visit this year. Keep up the good work gentlemen.
Great effort, pies sounds great..shame town hall charging by the hour, cheers
Did you put the famous movie scream at 12:39 when you said, 'Triangle of Death ?'
Went to the old st lukes school then move across the road to the new st Luke's school 1970 mr Helmsley the caretaker got a new house built
👍👍👍
The lost pubs of lower Broughton would be a good vid.
Very interesting vide, and information about Humphrey - apparently he's stepping down this year. I come from Irish-British heritage, as are many in Greater Manchester, my kids live here and extended family. It's a shame many of these pubs closed, but a number in Salford have closed after numerous violent incidents, shootings etc. the extortion rackets were strong in the 90's into early 2000's and were part of the downfall of many pubs in Salford. The fact is, the balance of wealth, corporate greed, collapse of industry being replaced by low paid 'service' workers who will never afford their own home (or barely pay rent) means we are all fragmented. Immigration has always been part of Manchester and Salford's history, the problem now is when it's mixed with this predatory system, disenfranchised people, the community breaks down - and let's not mention the flood of drugs into the community. We are all living in a property portfolio nightmare where the average joe is simply not needed the way things are currently, and the people that sat and drank in these old pubs can't afford a pint in the pub these days. Comes to something when Salford Lad's club faced closure if it wasn't for donations.. Crazy thing is Salford council do not own any social housing anymore either, let alone have the motivation to save these local pubs
As much as I enjoyed the vid it was a sad watch to see all these pubs I knew ( couldn't remember the Swan though) all gone. My areas were Greengate, Chapel St n lower Broughton. Worked in Ordsall for years so that area as well. Although 2 dozen pubs left only a few are traditional, Eagle, Egerton, Kings Arms, Oxford, Union, Pint Pot, Winston, Priory etc. Cheers from ex Salford now does his slurping in the Isle of Man🍺👍
My mum and dad had the Royal Hotel (widows rest) from 1979 to 1993 it was eccles new road corner of cemetery Rd Weaste.
Britain is done all its traditions gone all its values gone absolute madness and unnecessary
Very enjoyable watch..Looking forward to the next episodes
My memory with my dad is buying a leather bus seat for 10 shillings to be fitted in the back of our 1960 Reliant 3 wheeler van.
Used to go to school with Des Collins St Joseph’s in Ordsall , spent a day in the Railwsy pub Eccles’s back in about 1967, when I was about 10, used to phone him on ECC 2364 ( old phone number never forgot it ) 😂
How come no one ever remembers or finds out about my little brother Steven who died the same in the September we lived at 47 Harding St. Mum had Stephen in the front with the baby gate so he could talk to the little lad door Lee. When mam finished feeding David my youngest brother she saw Stephen was gone. She ran out looking up the street and on the croft. Lee came back and told Stephen was in the water, some older kids had let them out, and they over the bridge to the canal. Stephen fell in banging his head on the canal side. Mum found him face down. A young got him out. The ambulance on the Laundry st side so they laid him on the bridge to try and resus h8m. He died there with Mum holding his hand and stroking his legs. He was 3. Stephen Hobson, my little bro. We were never the same after that. The years haven't taken away the pain. They are all together in Agecroft cemetery.
Love that tradition, brilliant, was disappointed they removed table from the Lamb though🍺👍
Great job guys 👍 and I would love to know what Julie’s secret is she doesn’t look any older than 40 ! Hope you find her friend 🤞
Fantastic exhibition Phil ! Hey Tony don’t forget Llangollen 🤣 What a super poem Steven 😊 My grandad was a binman at one point 😊 My gran as bus conductor at Weaste 😊 The winters were cold ! I remember my gran layering coats on top of me at night 😂 Such happy memories of being brought up in Wythburn st, Seedly , Salford 😊 Happy Days 😃
David? Byrne, come on mate.
lived in Poplar court not far from the church, remember David Wyatt and his lovely wife. Open house to all the kids in such deprived area, moved away in 1974 but went back to say hello a few times, such fond memories. Singing in the choir at weddings and funerals for 25p a time felt so rich, going on trips in an old bread van, sitting on the racks, no health and safety then !! Nice to see he's still going strong, thanks for all you did when I was young x
Has anyone got any photos or knows of any relating to South Langworth Road in the late 70s. I can't find many at all.
It's remarkable how a thriving "city centre" of markets, shops, cinemas, churches, institutions and dense terraced homes vanished to become no more than a residential suburb of Manchester!
Salford council closed it for "refurbishment", but left it unheated for over a year. Dry rot set in and they couldn't afford to repair it. Sold and used as a restaurant. But was not a success and closed. I visited many times in my youth and sad it see it in this state. Too far gone to be saved, needs to be knocked down and rebuilt.
@@GlynDavies-tn1bq it’s owned by a private developer
Great memories.
Emotional video.
A very interesting video about an amazing place I've only recently discovered and would love to be able to visit. Thanks Tony and Phil, it's been great watching :)
Not so keen on Councillor August stating the multi storey was a "monstrosity", but rather an historical iconic part of Eccles for over 50 years. I love Eccles and will be filming tomorrow morning the shops and the car park for a nostalgic look round the " monstrosities" before it gets knocked down. Its historical, memorable and sad for me to see it change.

We're are they sold? Looks to be a great source of pies .
RIP Fred, funeral today
My Dad worked at Agecroft Crematorium in the 70s and 80s and met Canon Wyatt many times- he admired him greatly and spoke of him often. He loved all the work Canon Wyatt did for some of Salford’s most vulnerable people. Dad passed away last year but he would have been so chuffed for Canon Wyatt’s honour.
How do we get a copy of that work of art,my house and school are on there, and so many memories, thanks for doing it mate, nice to hear the Salford accent again ……regards from an ex pat…
One of my best pals grandparents had thr ship canal, many a good memory in there
