BMW R1150 GS Starter motor failure and replacement.
My BMW R1150 GS would not start off the button and the starter motor would struggle to turn the engine over. Sometimes it was fine but other times it would struggle to the point that it would trigger the relay to click and the clock to reset. It always run off a bump start so figured it wasn't anything dodgy.
To just make sure it wasn't the battery or generator, I put a charger on overnight and tried starting the next day.... I knew this wasn't the issue but just wanted to rule it out. As you saw, the starter motor was still struggling to turn over.
I tried to clean the starter motor out but it made no difference so ordered a new starter motor and fitted it :-).

@@ductdrbob no problem at all, hope it helps! Thanks for taking the time to comment, much appreciated 👍🏻
I am experiencing “bad gas syndrome”…. I ride this bike November-March in Arizona USA. I store it off season in a shelter. No air conditioning in the shed so the bike bakes in temps upwards of 113 F. I know how to cope with the effects of cold as I live in Minnesota where we go to -35 F. I removed as much as gas as I could siphon and put in a full tank of premium. I drained one fuel line by removing the ejector and letting the gas free flow. I’m hoping one cylinder firing will get the rest of the bad gas out of the second line. ( I really don’t want to remove the other Tupperware). I’m hoping this works. Is there any fuel stabilizer that works well in hot climates? Thanks again for the video.
Thanks, enjoyed this. Luckily your bike came with the excellent MRA screen. The standard one is totally inadequate, and tarnishes a nearly perfect machine with its bad buffeting.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment, I really appreciate it! That’s a good observation, I’m really happy the bike came with the screen and am really happy with the adjustability of it and the wind protection it offers. It’s such a great bike and the screen definitely helps makes it more of an enjoyment to ride.
Is that clear coolant? Or distilled water? I looked inside the radiator on a 2021 FE 350 today and thought it was distilled water…. But ive heard KTM/Husky use clear coolant from the factory?
I’m not sure if it’s distilled or not but it’s the Motorex M3.0 coolant that was recommended in the user manual. The coolant has a slight pink tint to it.
Simple pleasures. Unpretentious. Real world. Great video.
@@philippekervynfaucon9849 thanks for watching and for your kind words!! This GS shows me that we don’t need the latest and greatest to enjoy the ride. It’s full of character and I love it. I hope to do more with it in 2025 ✊🏻
@@MALVSMACHINE i had one and miss every minute of it...i used to live in Brazil so you can imagine the memories...I just sold a K1200S to get back to a boxer , a R1150R rockster...best decision i've made...this engine is so sweet. Thanks for the reply..and as we say in Brazil "Tudo de bom!"
@ I can imagine Brazil was a fantastic place to ride one of these around on, it’s somewhere I’d like to visit in the future 👌🏻. That’s a great decision, the rockster looks a great bike and I wish you many happy miles on it ✊🏻. No problem at all, engaging with people all over the world is my favourite part of RUclips; chatting with people who share a passion for motorcycles all over the globe is so much fun and I get to learn new things such as what “tudo do bom” means. In Wales we would say “i gyd yn dda”
Sorry for the question, but about the easy clutch lever that you have before, that one in the video it's better ?
It’s all good mate, I’m always happy to try and answer questions 👍🏻. The one in this video is just a hardened version of the normal lever (AS3 Brand), I replaced it because I injured my hand and needed to use all my fingers to pull in the lever, so I changed over from the easy lever as it was a bit short.
Just had this issue. Bike only has 20,000 miles. Water was getting into the three pin fuel pump connector when it rained and was shorting. Easy fix good to go.
I’m glad you got it fixed easily, many more happy miles ahead on the beast ✊🏻
thats not the adv model the actual adv model have blue forks and blue engine cover
I didn’t say anywhere that this is the GSA model, and there’s a bit more to the GSA than different coloured forks and rocker cover.
My magura hymec slave cylinder just started doing the same thing. Its only a few months old. Hopefully this isnt a frequent issue, magura says it supposed to be less maintenance than a cable clutch.
Thankfully it took a few years for mine to wear but thats not a good sign if it’s happened on yours in a few months! Hopefully warrantee will cover you off and it won’t happen again for a long time.
@@MALVSMACHINE mine got dirt and dust past the brass cap of the slave cylinder 1 ride after cleaning and fixing it. I tore it apart again and cleaned it but this time i put teflon tape on the threads for the brass cap. Hopefully this keeps the dirt out.

@@francisfelix4939 that’s great, I’m glad it helped! Now you can enjoy testing and adjusting to get the right feel for you 👌🏻
Nice and easy job bud, I didn’t really think it would be possible to bump start one of those because the clutch is enormous, but fair play to you all, the bike sounded great too 👌🏻
I was pleased with how easy it was, and she starts really well now so I wish I’d definitely changed it when I thought about it as it would have eliminated that little bit of stress on the long trip, but was trying not to spend money where I didn’t need to and it was doing a good job…. Up until it wasn’t 😆. Hopefully it’ll be good for many more miles now and I can make it look a bit better cosmetically as the frame has a little bit of rust to deal with. Was fun bump staring it, we were like a welsh bobsleigh team 😆
That looks really good, well made and sturdy.
It sure is, the plate is nice and thick so will last for a while, I like the setup as well 👌🏻
Thank you!
@@danielburema3087 Thank you too🙏🏻

Not on this occasion, have had many a fall there in the past though 😄
What a lovely bike! How do you find the stock rally seat? Is it comfortable enough?
@@siji117 thanks man, I really enjoy riding it. The seat has been pretty comfortable for now but I haven’t done any really long journeys on it yet, I tend to use my old BMW GS for the longer stuff as it’s really comfortable 😄.
hi there, do you think a Garmin thread overlanf 8" would find space on the motology plate maybe almost touching the TFT in the middle with the antenna top right (steering handle bar) ?
@@argentum_on_glass hello! unfortunately I think that even though it probably could be fitted to the plate, with the overland being 8” compared to the base edition’s 8”, there’s a possibility that the hand guards could strike the unit at lock, especially if you have aftermarket hand guards like BarkBusters. Im currently working away and am not home for another 6 weeks so can’t get you any measurements at this time sorry.
@@MALVSMACHINE if you remember after your time off maybe you can just comment our conversation so i can see it :) that would be great... I also think to set the whole couple a bit higher on the plate but i think the down parts of the two units will still be in the range of the hand guards.
@@argentum_on_glass no problem at all 😁👍🏻. I’ll see if I can make a video to show the dimensions of everything, and show the clearance from the bars.

Its very interesting for me that you also have a T7, but you love to take this thing on roadtrips. I also have one and its a blast, lovely motorcycle. One question also, i recall you took it off as well with the metzelers. I am also curious but also a total off road noob, i am fairly tall tho. Good thing is that everything here is dry dirt so no worries about mud. Would you recommend it or rather avoid it. If i go, better go together with someone
@@Bob-huisbaas hi Bob, I hope you’re well! Yeah, it’s a funny one…. I really enjoy the T7 but I keep getting drawn back to the GS for the comfort and seating position. I like the fact I could stretch my legs over the boxer heads on the days when we were getting the miles in 😆. The Metzeler tourance tyres done well in the dry dirt and loose gravel but the moment they touched anything that was slightly muddy they lost traction, so I’d say you’ll be safe as long as it’s dry. I Definitely recommend it, just take it slow and ride with someone as it’s a heavy bike to try and get off your leg if you have a bit of a mishap 👍🏻. Let me know how it goes 👌🏻
Thanks for a great vid, exploring the r1150gs, very similar riding background to you, whats the idea of the beak, can it be removed?
@@johnmignano7872 hi John, thanks for watching! I believe the beak is to feed air to the oil cooler that sits under the lights. I have seen one bike that has the beak removed but that was on an Instagram post, and it didn’t make the bike look any better 😄.

Hi Billy, no problem at all, I’m glad it helped 👌🏻. Happy riding ✊🏻
@@MALVSMACHINE if the front feels very soft and with a slight movement of the handlebars the whole bike shakes, would I go stiffer?
Hi Billy. I haven’t really experienced what you’re feeling there but it does sound like the suspension is too soft and you could be going through the travel quite quickly - the rebound may be a bit too slow as well? It would probably be best to reset back to the standard setting and then work from there, to find what feels better for wherever you’re riding.
so what is your sourece for all the new "shiny bits" bolts.
I use the website motorworks.co.uk as they have a really good selection of BMW parts, new and used 👍🏻
@@MALVSMACHINE Have you heard of euromoto electrics? for shipping in Canada? BTW thanks for the video. very instructional as i am in the process of fixing a 2001 1150R. Al most as old as me.....
Do you show what the procedure is for tightening or losening the rocker arm. I have a knocking sound on th RHS cylinder and i read it amy be cause by too loose rocker arm....??How do I tighten them??
@@InterimExec I haven’t heard of them, I haven’t really looked much further than Motorworks really as they had what I needed and delivered pretty quickly👍🏻. No problem at all, I hope it helps and I hope you’re having as much fun with the 1150R as I had with the GS 😄
@@InterimExec I done a pushrod change and then had to refit and tighten the rocker arms…. I think I covered it over two videos which I labelled episode 3 and 4 on the thumbnail. I seem to remember fitting everything in episode 3 and then having to wait for the torque angle gauge to be delivered before I could check the clearances and complete the torque settings on the bolts in episode 4. I’d like to think the process is the same as the 1150R but I’d say it’s worth checking the manual just to make sure 👍🏻.
