Took my youngest to Ewood for his first game, vs Nottingham Forest in 2015. 3 - 3 draw with a hattrick of headers from Rudy. A masterful performance!
Nice, Rudy was great in the air, some quality headers. I'm a Sunderland fan and have had some great visits to Ewood. Might try to attend on Boxing Day actually 👍🏼

How does the recruitment process work? What happens when you have done your analysis? How do Carlisle end up with a player like Georgie Kelly , on a 3 and a half year contract, when he hadn't played an English league game for 90 minutes for years before joining us. Isn't checking injury history part of the process?
Hi Mark, thanks for the comment. I can't really speak on that specific deal (as I wasn't involved) but there are lots of things to consider. Checking injury history would definitely be part of the process but it will often come down to weighing the pros and cons of each incoming player. If that was the case (Kellys history), he may well have been cheaper and seen as a risk worth taking based on the potential upside. It is quite common for a player to sign with more weight on what they did at a previous club (before their last) as their last move could have not worked out for a number of reasons (the style of play at that club, off field factors, personal relationships etc.) ... The thing is though, transfers are hard. The clubs that do the best business tend to be the ones that do the best. As a Sunderland fan, we've had our fair share of rubbish, but also ones that seem pointless on the surface, but come good later, whether that be for us, or as a sell-on. Thanks again for watching the video and all the best for the rest of the season 👍🏼

I've been humbled by many of the great minds of football interviewed by Chris, but to me Sean offers a multitude of fascinating points and seems to be truly advanced in how to approach the modern game. Great advice and best wishes :)
Thanks for the comment Karl. I agree, Sean is great. Very knowledgable but also such a great guy 👍🏼
I recognised one player from the Belgium league..Go Genk
Yes, go Genk!
I mean relegation threatened teams do one mistake, that is they do not sign the players they had on loan most times. Like Burnley in the Championship with Kompany, they had Maatsen on loan. They should've signed him in the PL, considering he was also their player of the year.
The thing is, signing them permanently is not always an option. Not sure on the Maatsen specifics, but as a Sunderland fan, we've had many great loaning signings that simply would never have become permanent...
It's almost impossible to get into a girls academy. The clubs only look for the same type of player, they all play exactly the same way despite being in different positions. The interest has gone up massively however the infrastructure and so opportunities are probably 10 years behind. If you're not a fast winger type how takes on players don't waste your time. My daughter plays defence or defensive midfielder, she takes all this lot on and usually always has clean sheets but never gets into an ETC because they don't value her skill set.
Interesting that you say that... what part of the UK are you from?
@@chrisgill_UK From Sussex, there's very little down here apart from Brighton which as a result is notoriously impossible to break into. I've seen or been a part of the process with Brighton, Charlton, Chelsea and Palace and their youth Academy girls teams are all made up of exactly the same type of player. I was told by someone in the know at Chelsea that the example i gave is the only type of player they're interested in.
Thanks for having me on Chris. Hopefully this can help a few people!
My pleasure Liam, thanks 👍🏼

All clubs have analysts as a key part of the coaching team, and the value they offer on a cost basis can be extremely high (especially as they are usually underpaid). Thanks for checking out the video and I appreciate your opinion, but I must stick up for the analysts here!

Thanks Alex 👍🏼
Interesting topic. I wonder if that sort of data will start to be monitored in the future, maybe stuff outside of the matches played like player psychology and their sleep profile FC python is a good blog for example football data plots
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Indeed, and I think that sort of thing is being looked out by clubs to be honest. You are right about FC Python too, a great resource 👍🏼
Interesting but surprised to hear more mention of python and SQL as skills needed rather than a logical aptitude and natural inclination towards numbers . Not everyone has the right natural skill set for data analysis and problem solving but programming skills can be taught to anyone . The skill with data is to be able to see trends and discrepancies when you're not specifically looking for them .
Hi Nigel, thanks for the comment. Can't say I disagree with you to be honest. That eye for detail and ability to see trends when others can't is definitely a key factor.
@@chrisgill_UK I worked with data or 30 years , performance, capacity , finance , fraud , sales and many more functions It's amazing how people are different and see things differently. Some need a colour chart, some need words others need data. It's also amazing how many ignore data thinking they know better because they don't trust it. Data should be considered truth . It's how you use those truths you find that's the clever bit
Are there any free data sources one can analyze/learn Football stats from and derive some insights ? Was always curious about this field, and I'm so so glad the algorithm made me stumble on your channel :)
The algorithm always finds a way! I'd check out Statsbomb as they have a number of free datasets. Should be some more useful videos on my channel to view too, and with help coding etc. check out McKay Johns on here. His tutorials are the best
@@chrisgill_UK Thanks a lot for sharing this in comments. Really appreciate the prompt response :)

Hi Chris, I know this isn't a recent video but I hope you'll manage to answer. I would be interested in helping lower league/local clubs with data analysis/data science but how could I perform any of it if there is no data (or no meaningful one) on lower leagues? I feel that the advice fits for people who want to get into video analysis, but I am more onto the coding side. Any suggestion? Thank you for the great content you're bringing us!
Thanks for watching, and leaving a comment. This is actually a question I asked Sam Radford in my latest video (near the end), and it is tough. But I think when working with leagues where there are no data providers, you can have a lot of impact by doing the basics. Don't get caught up in trying to replicate what you see at the higher levels, as a lot of the time it just wont be feasible/possible. Speak with the coaching staff and see what would benefit them. You can collect more basic data from affordable analysis tools (link in video descriptions). I agree though, it is difficult but you can make impacts, sometimes easier too as the coaches wont be used to having much analysis a lot of the times. Good luck in your analysis journey! 👍🏼
@@chrisgill_UK Thanks for the answer Chris!

What do i need to do to become an official scout is there a course to make me that? Thanks
Thanks for watching. Check out Talent ID from The FA, or even PFSA. Nothing official that is required though. Look to network and watch as much football as you can 👍🏼
It's high time you developed a comprehsive course on football analytics. Many football fanatics who are data professionals would want that. You are doing a good job Chris.
Thanks, I appreciate that. If only I had time to create a course! That would be nice. In the meantime, I'l keep inviting smart people on to share their wisdom too 👍🏼

Hello Chris Gill, i am a data analyst who wants to break into sports, I stumbled upon your channel and I have been paying close attention ever since. i would really need to know if you could help me with templates and links that will help me improve on my skills to boost my chances in landing a job. Can I become a performance analysis through sports management
You may have to do a masters afterwards to be more specialised, but I'd say yes. With or without a masters, you'd just need to start connecting with other analysts, and begin to share some analysis work whilst building up a portfolio. If you prove you have a passion and can do the work, that will go a long way in getting a job in the field. Good luck
Hey Chris! Thanks for the amazing content! I would ask you a question: do you know some free sources where i can find tracking data? Even not updated, but data related to old games. Thank you a lot!
