I still can't believe they broke the window after this. It's an amazing effect, the only problem is so many films copied it shot for shot as an homage that the original now seems a bit cheesy? Still, you can't beat the way it's synced with the blood leaking out from under the door of the confession booth.

My only problem with that scene is that they use Catholic chants, I expected more from Scorsese. We all know that should have been Orthodox. Other than that nitpick, the scene is fantastic if you manage to look past it

Nobody talks about how the architecture is used in this movie, especially this cathedral scene, where the framing changes depending on how close the camera is to the pillars and how much of the ceiling can be seen. Masterful filmmaking

I think the use of religious themes for Andrey throughout the film shows that he does have an innate pureness that Goncharov is somewhat envious of. Andrey is naturally a good person at heart, Goncharov has been forced to be good based on his life experiences.

This moment of the movie is very sad, reflexive and shocking. Goncharov In this part you can see how Andrey tries to manipulate Goncharov for the last time, but the direction of photography shows you that Goncharov has already made up his mind. Grief is going through his head for what he is going to do. The Cathedral and its romantic aesthetic represents the place where we go when we say goodbye to this world, where duels occur and that through faith, we manage to overcome it (at least following the Catholic thought of the time). the mourning for Andrey that begins at that moment, including andrey being bloody and alive. goncharov knows it and decided it, he is going to kill his friend. childhood friend who betrayed him, ending up collapsing the little trust that goncharov had in others... being one of his nails that ended with his own death

I hope so too, but remakes tend to have a bad track record. I can't think of a list of actors who could match what they did in the original, and there's always the risk of the someone trying to "improve" on the original in ways they really shouldn't.

A bit of an obscure fact, Joshua Graham from new vegas was heavily inspired by Andrey. Both men are very religious(while of different branches of christianity) but are thrust in a world of meaningless violence. I often think about Andrey’s line “Being a gangster isn’t a way to live, its a way to die….” Knowing Andrey you could interpret this sentence a thousands different ways. Its that kind of subtlety that elevates this movie above all others. We don’t make movies like this anymore
