My entry for the April 2022 composing competition hosted by Ryan Leach. This piece was inspired by the image shown, property of Riccardo Bertolo. The choir in this piece is made up entirely of myself singing all the parts, with a maximum of 40 “me”s singing at once. All other instruments are digital. - Music written and performed by Paul Gauger Image provided by Riccardo Bertolo Link to the ima...
"Sorry no, excuse me, may God forgive you. Requiesce in pace". Damn that was deep.
It's insane that the speech and ice Pick Joe's death take place at the same cathedral, but the music and lighting made it feel so different...
Since I was never able to watch the movie, is there anywhere that has a summary or do people just talk about what they remember from this amazing film
I still can't believe they broke the window after this. It's an amazing effect, the only problem is so many films copied it shot for shot as an homage that the original now seems a bit cheesy? Still, you can't beat the way it's synced with the blood leaking out from under the door of the confession booth.
What is this movie? I’ve seen it in my RUclips recommended but nowhere else.
Goncharov was by far the most entwrtaining movie i have seen, the way it tricks the viewer and makes you question what is right and wrong...my favourite part was right after Andrey's speech when Goncharov said"its Goncharoving time" and Goncharoved all over the cathederal, literally made me tear up
The way Harvey delivers the lines in Andrey's speech is amazing. You can really feel his passion in each word
I can't find this movie anywhere? ☹️😢
Yeah this movie is pretty rare, I used to watch it on the dvd but now it's long gone
Does anyone have the soundtrack during the docks scene, where those two smugglers in the boat get shot.
My only problem with that scene is that they use Catholic chants, I expected more from Scorsese. We all know that should have been Orthodox. Other than that nitpick, the scene is fantastic if you manage to look past it
Nobody talks about how the architecture is used in this movie, especially this cathedral scene, where the framing changes depending on how close the camera is to the pillars and how much of the ceiling can be seen. Masterful filmmaking
Matteo JWHJ 0715 directed this scene so well. Every time I hear this chills run down my spine. truely one of the best directors of all time
You know the movie is good when literally every scene has a couple hundred people saying it's their favourite and why. A 7/10 movie doesn't do that!!! You know who you are. 7/10, yeah right, buzz off.
1:33 "Only young birds fly in the skies..." still gives me chills 🥶🥶🥶🥶
Nice
I think the use of religious themes for Andrey throughout the film shows that he does have an innate pureness that Goncharov is somewhat envious of. Andrey is naturally a good person at heart, Goncharov has been forced to be good based on his life experiences.
somesortofcoincidence has some amazing scripts from the film you should definitely read through. I have a feeling this would've worked really well before Andrey made his speech in the Cathedral. Such a shame that that whole scene was cut from the DVD version of the film.
Fun Fact: in these scene when Andrey says that "It's always been the same old story", he's referencing the famous Russian Novel "The Same Old Story" by author *Ivan Goncharov*. Martin Scorsese was a true genius!
it's been 49 years and this film still reigns supreme.
I hope more and more people compose the score for Goncharov so the combined soundtrack is longer than the runtime of the actual movie
Andrey's speech in this scene has to be the best thing ever
This moment of the movie is very sad, reflexive and shocking. Goncharov In this part you can see how Andrey tries to manipulate Goncharov for the last time, but the direction of photography shows you that Goncharov has already made up his mind. Grief is going through his head for what he is going to do. The Cathedral and its romantic aesthetic represents the place where we go when we say goodbye to this world, where duels occur and that through faith, we manage to overcome it (at least following the Catholic thought of the time). the mourning for Andrey that begins at that moment, including andrey being bloody and alive. goncharov knows it and decided it, he is going to kill his friend. childhood friend who betrayed him, ending up collapsing the little trust that goncharov had in others... being one of his nails that ended with his own death
CHILLS MAN CHILLS
This scene danm near sent me to tears, the twisted church goers, this song, the speech that David gave to goncharov danm near sent me off
A powerful music for a powerful film
This scene... I have no words...
absolutely haunting scene. i walked out of this film a changed man
Still have to wonder how Pavarotti's performance of The Deum would have sounded like, if he didn't damage his larynx with them damn oranges
I remember the first time I watched this movie, this scene was my favorite.
This scene gives me the chills every time, thank you so much for posting this!
In director's cut was a longer speech, but i am love final version
There are unconfirmed leaks about remke in early production stages. I hope it will keep the quality of 1973 masterpiece
I hope so too, but remakes tend to have a bad track record. I can't think of a list of actors who could match what they did in the original, and there's always the risk of the someone trying to "improve" on the original in ways they really shouldn't.
I heard that too! Don't mess with a classic imo :/
Unrated character was ice pick joe ngl he was a unit and competent always giving Andrey a level headed and smart advice
My personal favourite scene
Definitely one of the most powerful scenes in the film. Andrey's speech still echoes in my mind even though I watched the movie a few years back. Especially the part where he said "There's a sinner in each and everyone one of us. And when the time comes, he will crawl out of his refuge."
When I was little, my brother played this movie for me and I actually fell asleep for everything between this scene and the final pursuit. When I went back and watched the full thing years later I was so confused 😂
Lmfao
You can really feel the emotional impact that Sergei's death had on Andrey in this scene. What a great speech.
This scene was absolutely chilling, Katya sitting there with her cold expression while Andrey gives his speech at the funeral of ice pick joe, she knew that that funeral was a call out on her actions but she was powerless to stop her now that him and Goncharov we're together
Sorry this scene was HOT. Also yeah it gave me chills.
I can hear every line in my head
This scene made me want to back to church on Sunday’s fr, my mum wanted to name me after andrey but my grandpa resisted because he hates Robert denero and by extension the film 😿
This is really beautiful. Do you have this posted on Spotify? Unfortunately, the Goncharov producers do not have the full soundtrack uploaded to Spotify.
Thank you! I will try to put it on Spotify soon. Never done that before. 😬
A bit of an obscure fact, Joshua Graham from new vegas was heavily inspired by Andrey. Both men are very religious(while of different branches of christianity) but are thrust in a world of meaningless violence. I often think about Andrey’s line “Being a gangster isn’t a way to live, its a way to die….” Knowing Andrey you could interpret this sentence a thousands different ways. Its that kind of subtlety that elevates this movie above all others. We don’t make movies like this anymore
"God will forgive me but will i forgive myself?" I still remember the line......it hits so deep
And the strong homoerotic undertones of the whole scene are really highlighted in that line too. Because his betrayal won’t be between him and god, it’ll be between him and Andrey
Fun fact. Andrey's backflip right after that line was not done by a stuntman. For the role, Harvey Keitel learned parkour
I got actual chills just now, that line is just * chefs kiss *
Amazing work from Karl Steinbaumer once again with the soundtrack for Goncharov
I feel like this scene was truly handled masterfully in part because of AMAZING acting, but also because of director Matteo JWHJ0715’s own experiences with escaping staunch Catholicism. He’s seen the dark underbelly of the church, and that bleeds through in this scene
Matteo JWHJ0715 didn’t direct Goncharov. He wrote it. Martin Scorsese directed it. It says it in the bottom credits.
@@redbomb3576 he stilled poured out his heart in that scene
I didn't expect Andrey to be catholic, I think he'd be Unorthodoxy at least but not catholic because of his misgivings. Theology is a theme in this music and this fits since the west and east kinda mix in a pan at this
Isn't he supposed to be half Polish on his mother's side? I thought in this moment he finally connects masculine (patriarchal church denomination) and feminine (mother's influence) spirituality, which is shown in his thoughtful speech
Andreys speech in this scene gave me chills. Honestly, the themes of time and facing your past are so wonderfully executed in this film. Andreys speech is the most powerful scene in the movie imo. Perfectly captures the essence of the main message.
I think this scene was Andrey's turning point from a devoted servant of the USSR to an international criminal wanted in at least 5 states, including Florida.
Yeah when he was relieved from the hallucinations.
Fun fact: in the theatrical cut of the film, Andrey's speech during this scene was actually a full minute shorter. The Director's Cut that now dominates all the streaming services contains Andrey's full speech, just as it appeared in the script.
Yes! Honestly I'm glad the full speech is standard now. This scene cannot, and should not, be rushed.
@@Splunktopus I've never cried watching a Scorsese movie, but this shit had me sobbing. Andrey was talkin mad heavy. It was like a revelation, this entire film has been a revelation and can't put into words how happy I am that I found this movie and that it's gained a cult following this big.
DC is by far the superior, it shows Martin's true vision... I couldn't even believe when I read that the uncredited Christopher Lee scene was also cut the theatrical version
Yeah I remember watching the Director's Cut with my grandpa. He told me how the Cathedral Scene was his favourite and he was suprised how he didn't remember some part of the speech. Turns out that was his first time listening to the full speech.
ay man where can you find the screenplay i really want to see this
