How much its cost

As an 86 GN owner myself, has anyone that bad mouths other owners of LS swapped GN's ever bothered to research the cost of rebuilding the 3.8 when it gives up? I know first hand what it costs. Mine had to be rebuilt just due to a one inch crack in the drivers side cylinder head. The heads alone were 5k! The intake manifolds to handle the better turbo was almost 2k! So before you bad mouth the owners for LS swapping an iconic car, let's consider costs. The turbo 3.8 had an ignition system that was way ahead of its time. In 1984, the GN had a distributorless ignition system that was NOT shared with any other car all the way through 1987. It was very specific to that car. The design error in that system was that it used a distributor style cam sensor that failed at any time. When they failed, it literally gave no warning. When that happened, the car would shut down! That cam sensor also sat right behind a hot radiator and in close proximity to the very hot turbo. If you had a hot air car, some would agree that those were worse. The problem is that NO ONE makes reliable aftermarket parts for these cars anymore or at all. If you can find any ignition parts, you're going to pay a very high premium for it and will almost likely be a used part from another GN. The turbo 3.8 also used a crank driven intercooler fan that bolted directly to the crank pulley. Those fans were very well known for breaking up, therefore reducing intercooler efficiency and exposing the 3.8 to detonation at lower speeds. If anyone has a turbo car, then you will know exactly what i'm talking about. Hard detonation in these engines was almost always catastrophic. The engine parts on the GN were specific to it. The engine parts had to be strengthened to handle the extra power. You cant just throw in any GM 3.8 V6 part into this engine and really expect it to work, because it WON'T! The exhaust manifolds/headers were notorious for cracking. You cannot buy replacement manifolds/headers for these cars. You can buy aftermarket headers for them, but only at a small handful of places. Be prepared to spend several thousand dollars for those as well. The engine gaskets for these engine aren't too terrible to find, but you're also paying a high price for those when you do find them. The turbo 3.8 had rope seals on the crank that always leaked oil, even when new! It's very common to do retrofits to use neoprene seals in place of the rope seals. The conversion to neoprene seals usually consisted of some crank machining to get rid of the knurled journals for those rope seals. So again, you're paying good money to have that done as well. Failure to do the proper machine work to accept neoprene seals resulted in the neoprene seal failing in a very short amount of time. The timing cover on the 3.8 were also known for wearing out due to the cam thrust button. These engines didn't use roller lifters. These were flat tappet engines with thrust buttons to control camshaft endplay. That thrust button would eventually wear a hole through the cover and cause an oil leak or in a worst case scenario, TOTAL ENGINE FAILURE! Although that's an extreme situation, it's a situation that has happened before. As stated above, these are flat tappet engines. Flat tappet engines require a certain amount of zinc in the oil to survive. Failure to do so resulted in flat cams and destroyed lifters. That damage then sent metallic debris through the engine and caused even more damage to bearings and other machined surfaces like the crank journals. A replacement crankshaft can be had, but it comes at a cost. Aftermarket crankshafts for these car are close to 3k. Forget about trying to find a legit factory crank that isn't all boogered up. The bearings are probably the easiest to find, but you're still paying more for those than you think. I'm sure some people will argue these points, so go right ahead if it makes you feel better. Long time GN owners know the struggles of owning these cars. These cars are fun to drive for sure, but they're incredibly expensive to repair when they need it. While I do agree wholeheartedly with the GN purist idea, GN owners are being faced with the idea of not being able to drive their cars because there's simply no parts to fix them if or when they break down. I fought a hard couple years against the idea of LS swapping my 86. My 86 has been LS swapped with twin 66mm turbos very similar to this one. I do still have the 3.8 that's freshly rebuilt and sitting in a vacuum sealed box. That engine may get reinstalled at a later date if I decide to do that one day or sell the car. Until that day comes I'm going to enjoy the car. Mine looks completely stock on the outside, so people still admire the car. I spent almost 29k to rebuild the 3.8 to handle higher power and relatively sturdy. The GN is and always will be a Regal with the WE2 appearance package. If you have the T-type or turbo T, then you have still have a Regal believe it or not. That Regal has the WE4 appearance package. The T-types had the same parts as the GN, but it's still only a Regal somehow. It was the very same car without the black paint. Some of them even had aluminum brake drums in the back, but it was still a Regal. There's next to ZERO differences between the T-types and GN's, but some people are holding onto the idea that they were dramatically different cars. Let it go, and stop attacking the people who do this. A twin turbo LS swap making 1k horsepower is still cheaper than rebuilding the 3.8 that'll hatch the block around 500 horsepower. If that happens, then you'll start the process over again, and may not ever be able to rebuild it because there's no parts available. It's a sad truth to GN ownership that every GN owner will have to deal with at some point. I'd rather see an LS swapped GN or T-type being driven around than see a GN or T-type sitting in a garage not being driven or can't be driven because it's broke down. The purist idea is BS, and always will be. LET IT GO!

i never understood why you would build a car with over 700 whp and put back tires on it that wont hold 400 ?

Oh I just love those two fat ass tire marks especially doing it on a roll just to show off its amazing power, man that's a dream right there, i'm getting one and want to mod it close to 700hp more that would be a waste to me but i would love to know how much did he spend to get it that high in HP.
