Just to add: turns out that it did end on a happy note because this tension only lasted a few months, quickly blew over and then Bill Clinton and the Singapore PM at the time made up over the incident 3 years later in 1997 and played golf on 2 different occasions to make up for things. Every story has a happy ending, even this one lol

IMAGINE; JUST IMAGINE if we had a responsible leader here in the US at the time of the Michael Fay caning (I know we can only dream of responsible politicians) who said "you know what, given how bad crime is; we want to fix that, but more importantly, we owe it to the American people to say; hey look at what Singapore is doing, what they are doing is obviously effective. We in the US need to change course and this young man brought it upon himself. We need to restore law and order in the U.S. and we stand by our partner Singapore." Imagine that? All this tension back then. For what?! To try to act like some moral leader? You'd think Mr. 1994 Crime Bill Clinton would have been all in favor of this right? LOL Oh as long as it's the US of A doing things, then it is okay. American foreign policy hypocrisy at its finest and this is just a fraction of that.

If you look at the offences, The "vandalism spreee" lasted over 10 days and included stealing road signs, spray painting cars and a smashed windscreen. When arrested, the teens were also found in possession of stolen items. So it was not a single night of stupidity, it was sustained and consistent over more than a week. Whilst caning is not done in the US, they do have some laws which means that potential prison time of years for minor infractions. The US is well within its rights to campaign for leniency for its citizen, but Singapore is also within it rights to refuse.

    M. Peter Fey was old enough to show respect to his host country and he violated it's laws and flaunted his own sense of entitlement. His enablers thought he should get a pass because well ... that's how he was raised... always getting a pass. The caneing was what anyone else would have received and he's no different. Obviously the old adage of "spare the rod and spoil the child" is very accurate, but fortunately he received the necessary discipline to make life altering changes in his ways of thinking and his lack of respect for others. He made a good example because I've heard of no other tourist who has been caned since, plus he has to live the rest of his life with this very public embarrassment.

I remember this. Several US states still have a death penalty, so to complain about a caning is a bit two faced by comparison. He knew what he was doing, he knew what he was in for if caught, he was an arrogant yank that thought that he was untouchable. He found out otherwise & I guarantee that he will never forget it his whole life.

And the fact that; the same year, Bill Clinton signs his crime bill that quintupled the US prison population for drug offenses, etc. So..... talk about hypocritical to accuse Singapore of anything. In fact; you'd think Mr. "I wanna get tough on crime" would have been in favor of what Singapore did and showed it to the American people; saying we owe it to them and we in the US must do what we can to make our nation safe again. No such luck, because we don't have rational thinking politicians. We didn't then and we sure the hell do not now.

So a spoiled little 'Murican brat breaks the law in a foreign country, destroying property and expecting to get a slap on the wrist as he would get in America. Then shrieks like a stuck pig when he has to face the consequences. After Clinton got involved, they should have upped the punishment to 12 strokes - I bet they haven't had an incident since. It's a cruel world.

Crap. I remember being caned quite brutally at school, for something I actually didn't do. Years later I met the Headmaster who caned me. When I told him I genuinely hadn't done it his reply was, "Possibly not, but think of all the stuff you got away with". Couldn't argue.

No way, I had the same thing happen at my school- padded a half dozen times for what I didn't do, and when they found out I was innocent, the teacher said something like, well I'm sure you did something I didn't know about, so we're even. Yup, same mentality.
