The Pillars of Garment Making - What’s a 7-8 head croquis & What are Flat Garment Sketches
I have several patterns, for example the circle skirts of the 1950's, in which fullness relies on a petticoat of some kind. However, the patterns never state the under garments that are required. Could you mention something about the silhouettes and shaping possibilities of undergarments and how to design them?
There are definitely undergarments that can add fullness to the skirts, like petticoats or even linings. Most petticoats include a lot of rectangular pattern pieces that are gathered to create fullness. The amount of fullness depends on the fabric thickness and drape. Often, petticoats are tiered skirts with different amounts of fullness at each tier.

@ginareneedesigns Hi Gina! I have this correction I want to try and I wonder if, after the slash and drop correction is done, I have to shit it back in place the top portion of the pants (above the crotch level) to where it was initially? This correction will make my CB seam straighter and I think I do need the inclinaison I had before to accommodate my behind. Thank you so much!
Hi Helene, It's great to hear from you! It really depends on your body shapes. Many times, it's not needed to add it back to the top portion and it can sometimes cause the correction to be cancelled out except for the back rise curve adjustment. If you need to add more to the top waistline, you can and then see how it is in the fitting sample. This isn't a right or wrong here and it's hard to say without trying it out! :)
@@GinaRenee Hi Gina, same here!! And Happy new year! Thank you so much for your response : you confirm what I thought, not to add back at the waistline but only correct the angle of the CB curve (as my body needs it I think, and also shift the side seam back in its place too). I’m only going with the theory here for the angle of the center back seam, because I believe to have a rounder bum than the average. But I do wish I could drape myself and see for good what my body really needs as for this angle!! Thanks again and take care!
@@helenekiraly3510 Yes, it would be so nice to drape directly on our bodies! :) You can always add extra seam allowance along the entire waistline just to have it to work with if you need it. It's always easier to cut it off than to add it!
Thx for the free download 😎

I'm so glad this was helpful, Elisabetta! :) Wishing you a wonderful holiday season.
Love that video. I make all my garments from my sloper ,no need to buy patterns anymore. It is helpful to see different uses of darts and design lines. Thanks
Thanks for an inspiring and helpful video, Gina! It's really fun to see how you can use a sloper to create designs that are both beautiful and at the same time ensure a good fit. After taking your Moulage course, I'll have my sloper ready soon and can't wait to try this out 🤩 Hope to see more videos on how to use a sloper for making different styles/designs in the future😊
Thank you so much for your lovely message! It’s wonderful to hear that you found the video inspiring and helpful. Using a sloper to create beautiful designs that fit well is such a rewarding process, and I’m so excited for you to try it out once your sloper is ready after the Moulage course 🤩. I am new to sewing. And I am finding that it is frustrating to use a pattern from the Big 4. And not fit perfectly into one size in a multiple size pattern envelope. I have been trying to grade between sizes. But that doesn’t always make a perfect fit either. Although it does make a difference for the better to be sure. I think the sloper will work much more effectively for me. I am currently working on a holiday gift for my sister. Simplicity S3035 views B and D. Fortunately it is a sweatshirt and sweatshirt fleece maxi skirt with a lot of ease in its loose fit style. But even so, I am still having some difficulty with the waistband on the top. My sister and I both are size L in the bust and hips. But a XXL in the waist. So I don’t know what adjustments to make for a proper fit. We’re both under 5’3” so if I make the entire top in XXL, she’ll drown in it. But an L would be to snug in the waist and look frumpy. The skirt is perfect. But it has a drawstring and a 2” elastic waistband that I added an extra inch to. So what should I do with the top, for a perfect fit? I want to make one of these outfits for myself after the holidays too. But right now I just need to finish my sister’s look. Thank you for any help you can give me. 🦋
I highly recommend measuring the body and measuring garments that fit well for you in those areas. Then compare those measurements to how the actual pattern measures. The issue is that garment ease can vary a lot from company to company, so measuring the actual body, garments, and pattern is your best bet. I explain this more in a webinar that I host. Thanks for the feedback. I did notice and have to see what can be done. I'm happy to hear you love the books. I hope you can still make the most out of the videos even the light drawing.
thank you for the video. I would like to make palazzo pants. I have two questions: 1) Can I widen the legs so the bottom is wider than the hip. In other words so the side seam swings out from the hip instead of going straight down. 2) Do I need to add the same amount of extra inches to the side seam as the inseam? And the same amount I add to the front do I need to add to the back? In other words if I add 2" to the bottom of the back side seam, do I need to add 2" to the bottom of the front side seam, the back inseam and the front inseam?
Hello, I recommend downloading this free guide and if I remember right, I think it helps explain a little about making adjustments to the leg panels: www.ginareneedesigns.com/create-your-pants-base-pattern/ Yes, the legs can be wider than the hips. You don't need to give the same amounts to the side seams as the inseams. I usually just go with what looks good to me based on experience.

Hi there, I’ve just come across this video and wondered if this helps where the back is too tight and the back of the sleeve is pulling and fraying where it is inserted into the top? Many thanks. ( I only seem to have this problem on McCalls patterns).
You have two options - give to the across back like this video shows, and/or give to the sleeve where it feels too tight. You can do both of these if it's quite tight.
