Jacques Rancière's Political Philosophy
Basic concepts
Rancière's philosophy began as markedly radical, anti-elitist, and aggressively anti-authoritarian, with a focus on comparing and contrasting aesthetics and politics that developed later in his career. Gabriel Rockhill published an English glossary of Rancière's technical terms in 2004 as Appendix I to the English translation of Rancière's The Politics of Aesthetics with cross references to their explication in Rancière's major works....

Maybe I missed it but some discussion should have been made about Hidetaka Nishiyama's pictures throughout Mas Oyama's first edition of "This is Karate". Why did the second edition of this large book remove all his pictures? Was there a conflict with the Shotokan Style and Oyama's Style? Was there a parting of company between Nishiyama and Oyama?

I met Mr. Nishiyama in the mid ‘70s. It was at the first AAU meeting when they were deciding whether or not to accept Karate into the AAU. Mr. Caylor Adkins introduced me to Mr. Nishiyama. Mr. Adkins trained with Mr. Nishiyama in the very late ‘50s when Mr. Ohshima went temporarily back to Japan. I trained in a Nishiyama Dojo in Palmdale in the late ‘80s for about a year before opening my own SKA Dojo.

Professional photographer and Karate-ka, Steve Rough, put together this 9min, 33 sec Photo Archive that was shown at Sensei’s Memorial Celebration held on September 7, 2019 at Midwest Karate Association in Minneapolis, Minnesota before a few hundred of the many students he taught and which many have continued on become martial arts instructors in their own right. The photos cover the seminal years from about 1971 to 1977 and include many top Shotokan Karate Sensei’s including Nakayama, Nishiyama, Okazaki and Yaguchi, to name a few. Please share this Memorial Archive with others. Bowing... Sensei Walter Bera.

Introduction and Background to Hidetaka Nishiyama 西山 英峻Shotokan Karate Master (b. 1928 - d. 2008) A Historic Autobiographical Interview in Five Chapters with Sensei Walter Bera PhD Hi! I’m Walter and this is an introduction with some background information you may of interest regarding these historic interviews I just published for the martial arts community. I am also asking for volunteers to help in doing a transcription and then translations to make the interviews accessible to the worldwide martial arts community. RUclips strongly supports this Creator Studio Community practice. You can check the process out on RUclips itself. In 1977, I was a University of Minnesota grad student and Shotokan Karate instructor, I and my professional Producer and Camera friend, Dale Cooper, were enthusiastic young karate-ka. We were training with US karate pioneer, Sensei Robert Fusaro, in Minneapolis when he hosted the AAKF Championships in 1977. Dale and I tentatively approached the already legendary Sensei Nishiyama and were thrilled that he was open and even excited to do an hour long autobiographical video interview using our then, state-of-the-art, reel-to-reel Beta videotape recorder. We made it our mission to safeguard and preserve this precious interview tape as video technology continued to change. Over these 40 plus years, the original Beta reel-to-reel tape was transferred to a VHS tape format, later a DVD disc and finally to the digital video format you see and will stay preserved for all in the digital Cloud. Now another generation of karate-ka can experience, see and hear the vibrant, young, inspiring 49-year old Sensei Nishiyama tell his remarkable life story. Learn of his samurai lineage and why Shotokan Karate would become the focus of his life and how he dedicated himself to become one of the greatest teachers of an entire generation of karate-ka in Japan, the US and around the world. Introduction and Background to Hidetaka Nishiyama 西山 英峻Shotokan Karate Master (b. 1928 - d. 2008) A Historic Autobiographical Interview in Five Chapters with Sensei Walter Bera PhD Hi! I’m Walter and this is an introduction with some background information you may have on the historic interviews I just published for the martial arts community. I am also asking for your help in doing a transcription and then translations to make the interviews accessible to the worldwide martial arts community. Walter thank you for posting these interviews. I know I will view them many more times. Mr Nishiyama had much to do with my successes in life especially when things got tough. I trained in the Central Dojo and was recruited by Frank Smith. I trained from June 63 to July 65 and attained the Rank of 1st Degree Brown Belt. Ray Dalke, Frank Smith, James Yabe, Ray Fujikawa, Kresse, Larry Fuglino, Gene and George Takahashi, Aoki, and Pat Web were some of the students I trained with.. I have many fond memories. I would travel with Sensei Nishiyama to San Diego and train with his University instructors class. He used me when he was demonstrating technique to the class. I also remember Sparing with James Yabe in a demonstration at the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium. I accompanied him several other times to other dojo's. Mr. Nishiyama had at that time envisioned Shotokan Karate becoming an Olympic Sport, an idea he shared enthusiastically with us and others at that time. Lastly, I recall the excitement when several Ni Dans and San Dans from Japan were invited to the Olympic Dojo. On the day of practice with us, I was late and changing when Frank Smith came in and he wasn't happy. Tanaka had just broken his jaw with a 'round house' kick! I felt bad as Frank was a good friend who started me in Karate and let me train with him over the years. Frank lived and breathed Karate and loved training, breaking tiles and boards; Training on the Beach and Mountains and Deserts He didn't even miss a practice immediately after his injury.. I left the Dojo in July 1965 to join the Army and fight in Vietnam. When I was at Engineer OCS it was the discipline and attitude imbued in me by Sensei Nishiyama that led me to graduate against impossible odds. At OCS we started with 63 candidates and at a the end of 6 months we graduated 16. I was number 8 in the class. On 9 Dec 66 I was commissioned a 2d Lieutenant with orders for Vietnam as Commander of the 520 th Combat Engineer Detachment. But for Nishiyma's instruction, I would never have made it.
