Hound on the Run
США
Добавлен 21 ноя 2021
Hi, I'm Niklas Isaac and I'm a hound hunter. I run my hounds in the mountains of Oregon chasing bobcats and we go on all kinds of adventures.
Last year, I wrote a book called "Cat Dog Chronicles" that is all about the process I've been going through learning how to hunt bobcats with my hounds. If you are interested and want to support my pursuits, it's available on Amazon -- amzn.to/3xUmvwF
I also write a newsletter/blog at where I share more about the intricacies of hound hunting, check it out and subscribe to stay up to date! www.houndontherun.com/
I love talking with other hound hunters and really anyone involved with dogs of any kind, so if you'd like to get in touch, please use the links on my Contact Page - www.houndontherun.com/p/contact-me

A Quick Look At My New Dog Box | Hound Hunting Vlog 2023
It was a slow day of hunting so I figured why not give a quick tour of the new dog box I built. So far the box is working out great and I'm really happy with how it turned out. I am working on a longer video showing how I designed and built the box, so stay tuned for that!

In the second half of the video, enjoy some footage from the day's hunting activities. Once we got away from the loggers, it was a great day to be out in the woods.

Early Season Bobcat Hunting in Oregon | Hound Hunting Vlog 2023
Просмотров 4,3 тыс.11 месяцев назад
This video was from one of the first days I was able to get out for some proper hunting this season. With the rifle deer season open, finding space to run dogs is challenging and bumping into deer hunters is inevitable. In my experience, most deer hunters I encounter are very friendly and often excited to see someone out with a bunch of hound dogs. There are some who are not happy to see hound ...
Exercising My Hounds to Condition Their Feet | Hound Hunting Vlog 2023
Просмотров 445Год назад
A hound can only hunt for as long as his feet will hold up. And since my dogs haven't had much time in the woods over the summer mainly due to high temperatures and fire restrictions limiting access, their feet have gotten soft. To get ready for the upcoming hunting season, I jumped at the opportunity of a cooler day to get them on the road to start toughening up their feet for hunting season. ...

This is Bruno and Clover's second hunting season and I'm really excited to se...
Seth Hall's Speed Dogs | Ep. 14 Hound on the Run Podcast

For this week's episode, I had on my good buddy Seth Hall who is just about the most enthusiastic hound hunter I know. He knows how to have a good time and has a borderline unhealthy obsession with not only his sighthounds, but the almighty hare they pursue. I decided to skip the into and just get straight intro out the conversation. I hope you enjoy it. Seth is a member of the Houndsman XP tea...

Throughout the interview we learn all about Brett's history with dogs, starting with Airedales and running coyote dogs (sighthounds) before discovering his true love of dry ground lion dogs. I had a grea...

I made a mistake! This week's episode was supposed to feature a special guest, but I made a technological error that cost me the whole recording … so, I had to take a different approach and decided to share some details about how I'm preparing for the upcoming bobcat season here in Oregon. In this episode, I talk about: • How I'm preparing my dogs for the upcoming bobcat pursuit season … • What...

On this week’s episode, I am joined by Josh Michaelis from the Joy Dog Food company. We had a great conversation all centered around our shared love of hound dogs and I peppered him with the many questions I have about competition coon hunting since it is so much different than how I hunt with my dogs. I learned a lot and oddly enough, forgot to ask all the dog-food related questions I had queu...

Howdy y'all. On this week's podcast, I highlight an important news story that could be a big deal for South Dakota hound hunters, cover a couple actions to take on Howl for Wildlife's website to help our Canadian brethren out, plus we look at a few incidences in which wildlife and humans collide in odd, unexpected ways. I also speculate as to why our fearless leader Brandon’s dog keeps biting e...

This week I’m flying solo and bringing you a healthy dose of hound and wildlife-related news. The main story I cover hits particularly close to home and if you are a hound hunter in Oregon or Washington, the implications of the decisions of a certain private land owner just might change how - or more like where - you hunt with your hounds this upcoming season. DIY Dog Box Talk w/ Anecdote of a Houndsman | Ep. 6 HOTR Podcast

This week I have my fellow HoundTuber (hound RUclipsr … get it?) Chris from Anecdote of a Houndsman. He recently published a video about building a dog box out entirely recycled or reused materials. The man is a DIY juggernaut and knows his way around a scrap yard … in fact, he used to own one. I have been planning on building a new dog myself for a while, so I thought this was a great opportun...

Hounds Running the Backroads of Oregon in Search of Bobcats
As a former central Oregon hunter of bear, cougar, and bobcat with dogs, I would like to point out that all responsible hunters would never hunt over another hunter. When other game seasons are in force, I was taught to refrain from running the dogs. After all, we get the most quality time in those magnificent Cascades. Enjoy it!
How many cats did you catch last season
Was this a DIY build?
Yep! I built it last year and taught myself how to weld in the process.
I’m from South Dakota and run hounds. If you ever need more info on what we’re fighting for here, I’d be happy to let you know! We can use hounds on lions in all of South Dakota outside the fire protection district year round, we can also use hounds in custer state park with a certain permit, we are trying to be able to utilize hounds in all of the black hills/fire protection district (where the majority of the lions are, and there are a lot). We can use hounds on bobcats in the black hills/fire protection district. Could be one of the best states to run hounds, we are just held back in some cases.
One of my best cat dogs ran tracks backwards first to the tree every time
Where's a picture of the cat?
That cat was so big I couldn’t fit it in the frame ;)
Hey buddy id like to go hunt with ya and show ya a few ticks that IV lernd over the years
Hey! I’m always open to tips and tricks! Send me an email at houndrunnerweekly@gmail.com
@@houndontherun yes sir
Good work to you and the hounds
Are those treeing walkers?
In the thumbnail the one on right is Treeing Walker/Running Walker; the one on the left is Treeing Walker/ Black and Tan.
How do you keep them from running a lion? Or does it just happen and you say oops and get them at the tree?
Nice try, Fed. 😉
@@houndontherun 😂😂😂 that answered my question. That might be the nastiest name anyone had ever called me, I only asked because I live and hunt where both are legal.
I’m just messing, you know I’m just jealous of you guys that get to run the big stuff! Seriously thanks for watching and happy new year!!
Good job where did you get your pups there good looking pups and do you have any you would part with I hunt blueticks and red ticks iam looking for a good pup iam a guide if you have one or know off one please let me know great job your doing thank you
Hey thanks so much!! I might be able to help you out with a pup, send me an email and let’s talk! My email is on my contact page - www.houndontherun.com/p/contact-me
Awesome video you own those beagles?
Thanks! I don’t own them, they are owned by Missy who is in the video.
How close to reedsport are you would love to run some hounds with my bluetick
Hey thanks for watching! I am about 3hrs from Reedsport, never hunted down there. Got some good ground to run on? Get in touch through my contact page and let’s chat! www.houndontherun.com/p/contact-me
Im glad to see fellas like your self enjoying dog hunting. I wish more people would go and see how much work is really involved in making cat dogs. Its not easy and takes up all your time effort and money ofcourse lol. I look at it like this... theres men who hunt dogs and then theres dogmen. You are a dog man. Keep doing what your doing buddy and catch a bunch!
Thank you so much, that really means a lot to hear that! Most people really have no idea what is involved in these dogs and bobcats but I feel like it’s a worthy pursuit. Hope you’re having a great season!
Where did you get your blue ticks from? A lot of blue ticks I see have droopy skin and lazy looking. Yours look slim and athletic!
I agree, they are built quite a bit differently than a lot of Blueticks. Their dad is a bluetick that comes from Cameron and Hammer lines and he happens to be very lean and lanky, definitely where the pups get their body shape from I’d say. Their mom is half Walker, half Black and Tan. Thanks for watching! I will have some new videos up soon and you’ll get to see them all in more action!
@@houndontherun thought it was a mix or a top of the line blue tick. Let us know if you ever breed and have pups
Walker gives them that athletic look
@cheenou5007 right on will do! Where are you located? Send me an email would love to chat! Houndrunnerweekly@gmail.com
Awesome!
Hey slacker, gets some fresh footage up, your getting behind 😂😂😂
Hard to edit videos and hunt these dogs at the same time!
Do you typically start a new pup doing a blind drag or do you ever drag it when they can see it and chase it? If so any difference?
I like to make it super easy for them starting out and just use hot dogs or chunks of meat to do really short drags, and yeah gotta show it to them at first and they figure what’s going on pretty quick. This video was after they had done a bunch of drags like that in the backyard, the blind drags are still tough though. Having used that bobcat scent a lot since I recorded this, that particular scent isn’t nearly as stinky as other types I have used so I think this exercise was particularly tough for the pups. Thanks for watching!
What are the other scents that are better?
@sicsempertyrannis8830 can’t remember the brand but they were for raccoon. Not saying they were better, they were just stinkier so easier to trail. Bobcats don’t leave much scent behind, so the gland scent from DU is probably the best currently available on the market.

Look forward to watching your videos
Thank you so much!
Nice Job Nick!
Keep up the good work
Thank you!
Keep grinding Nik!! Good video!
Thanks Jonny!
Needs chain! It’ll get beat up! Get some sticky door jam seal for that gap!
I'm trying to fix a rig rail for the top of my slide in box and plan on putting a chain around it
Looking forward to seeing dog box build.
Thank you! Been working on the video but have a lot of footage to go through but hoping to have it up soon!
Need Coulee in Virginia and let her tree all kinds of ringtails
She definitely loves them! I would also love to visit Virginia, have heard great things.
Took the six-pack out with David's crew for opening day. They all did great, Angus got to see and track a rabbit for a bit. when we started in, he wasn't done , making his thoughts quite clear. Looking forward to watching how your group does this year.
Awesome! Love hearing about ol’ Angus. Thanks for watching Missy!
After listening to you explain how you want to train your dogs to rig I like your idea Nick anxious to see how it works for you. Love your videos
Thank you so much! Yeah I will probably end up adding at least some eyelets for some chains/snaps…. Or maybe go with the “Watson Chain”
Good luck Nick box looks good get a couple chains fixed on the rig and letem roll
Keep it up
Thank you!
Good idea I look forward to seeing how they do ...Good stuff Nick
Thank you Brett!
Get that chain welded up on the rail so you can tie not only dogs but ice chest and such, did I not teach you anything! 😂
You might teach him something one day, keep the pressure on him
I know I know, you are probably right. If I had access to your scrap yard I’s probably have all kinds of extra stuff welded on 😂
@@houndontherun I drilled 5/16 holes in my dog box top rail & installed eye bolts there inexpensive at the hardware store I use them with snaps on both ends so I can remove my rig chains and can also hook tie downs to them to hold ice chest & tool box down,
Well quit talkin and get to catchin!
You know your dogs live a good life just like my huntn dog did. It breaks my heart to see a dog chained up its whole life. They need to be out in nature
Thank you! You are right, all the fur mommies have no idea how much they are depriving their dogs by not letting them hunt!
Why didn’t we toughen up your feet Nik?! 😂
Haha hilarious
Love roading hounds to for conditioning. I have also taught mine to run on the treadmill during the summer when it is really hot. The treadmill is in the basement where it is cool.
Right on, I have always like the treadmill idea and want to try it with my dogs at some point. Thanks for watching!
Great work love the clips

I sneaked lion steaks in on my dad told him it it was deer and didn't tell him until he finished and he said "you mean you just fed me pushy cat" hahahahahahaha
Lion steaks are as good as venison i think.
Greetings from Northern Idaho!
Clearwater mountains
Going hunting in the morning.
They can catch exactly one of my dogs out of 6.
I used to feed joy dog food it's the best.
I was instrumental in firing the first shot so to speak in fighting the anti hunting org Humane Society Of The United States here in Idaho. I could write a book on it but suffice to say we won that election but it was a long hard fight from raising campaign funds to organizing holding raffles, pig feeds for about two years........ Soon after we won Oregon and Washington an California lost their ability to hunt bear, lion, bobcat ending these states ability to work their dogs. Quiet a undertaking to say the least, hard fought campaign, lots of money spent and alot spent before the election.
Wow, I would love to chat with you more about this, send me an email at houndrunnerweekly@gmail.com. Thanks for sharing!
I would bet these new hunters don't even remember my name or anybody else's name that helped save hound hunting in Idaho. Without us there would be absolutely no hound hunting in this state. We skipped 2 years of hunting our dogs just campaign and defeat those people at the ballot box. Fact.
I don't want to leave anyone out but there was about 15 of us statewide that took leadership roles and from the ground up. Like I said we gave up about two years of hunting to devote ourselves to this fight and for a bunch of poor working class guys and a couple of pro hound lawyers we raised over half a million dollars and spent it all in the last week of the campaign mostly on constant ad s statewide. I can't explain to you how important it is to get involved and stay involved if you want to save this great sport, otherwise you will lose it like oregon, Washington, California, Colorado etc.
