Very informative, Thank you!
Loved the video. I was on vacation about a month ago and rented a plane and instructor and flew that approach. Would like to see more of this type content.
@@alsj61 That’s a great idea to do on a vacation. You get to fly, see the local area with a local expert and contribute to the local economy. I’ll be using that idea in the future. Also, I’m editing our departure from BJC with an VOR approach and another RNAV approach into Erie. We unfortunately lost a camera going from Longmont to Greeley then to BJC, but we pick back up on our departure. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
@@blueyonder360 yes, it has become a mission. I also that week flew 13500 over Longs Peak in a 182. A year ago, in San Diego I flew over the Pacific ocean and the Bay Tour. All bucket list flights. \
I rather buy a plane then go get ripped off at ATP
@@Timemachine429 I’ve heard of that happening. Thanks for watching.
Great video !!!!!!!!!!! The plane that was 800 ft below you was a crop duster.
@@tomqueisser7706 you’re right. I couldn’t tell when it passed under me but my wife picked it out when it came out on her side.
Nice shirt and video!!
@@tshinefield There’s a select few pilots in CO with the same shirt…but I’m not supposed to talk about flight club…oops😉
Great video, I love the perspective of the wing mounted camera. I was surprised to see the prop lever on the 140, does your Cherokee have the O-360?
Thanks for watching and yes, we have the Lycoming 0-360 STC making it a Cherokee 140/180 conversion.
@@blueyonder360 Very cool I love the 140, got my cert in the Tomahawk and the 140, but never flew the 180. I'll bet it's a completely different airplane! Many happy miles!
Now that was entertaining! Thanks!
Thanks for watching and for the comment.
ATC telling someone to make a tight turn is not good. you can’t tell someone how to fly their aircraft. Recipe for a stall spin.
@@davidhames319 I agree. This particular aircraft was being setup for runway 27 when they requested 36. In order to get setup on final they needed to make a tighter turn. I’m not a fan of taking directions from ATC. I know their intentions are well, but the pilot needs to fly the plane and make safe decisions at all phases of flight.
Great video !!!!!! Like !!!!!
Thanks for enjoying and for the thumbs up.
Nailed it!
Great job!
Nice job on the video. Looks like a blast!!
@@tshinefield it really is quite the event.
Great job! Love the FF overlay! Liked the fast forward too.
@@fatherof2710 Thanks for watching. The FF helps to show what was around us. If you watch closely, the crop duster was out there for a little while before we showed up. Still pretty crazy to see during that event.
well done
@@flywiseman Thank you for watching.
Nice enjoy
Great video of a fun day out. So fun to fly some formation with you!
@@mohlenair Can’t wait to do it again. Lots of fun.
I was wondering who was going to post a video first. Nice job!

@@frankbeck3890 thank you for the kind words. We’ll keep’em coming.
Great idea, nice job, thanks for sharing!
On my bucket list. Unfortunately, the air space over my area is Class C Air Space...
@@BumbleBee55R We had an 8000’ bravo shelf to stay under, a TFR over downtown for the baseball game and a class D airport to the west of where we were maneuvering. Definitely a lot of different airspace to be aware of as well as SA of the other aircraft doing the same thing we were. It was a great experience.
What a great video, 👏
Thanks for watching and for the comment.
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it.
You gonna fly or talk it there.
I really appreciate you making this video and the others you have made. They are really good and inspirational. Im a retired US Army UH-60 Blackhawk pilot. I retired 21 years ago (2003) and that was the last time I flew a Blackhawk. Ive never been in or ever even flown in any small aircraft. Im retiring permanently in 2 years at the age of 62. I live in Atlanta and Ive been a US postal carrier for many years. I deliver mail to a small aircraft subdivision here called Mallards Landing, and it totally fascinates me everyday Im in there to see Pipers, Cessna's, and various other aircraft sitting in the front yard or in a hanger in the driveway of the homes there...what a cool subdivision!! The aviation bug has come back to me after all these years and Im going to go to flight school here in Atlanta and get my private pilots license The Piper 140 is the aircraft i would like to own, so I hope I get to train in one as well. I have no idea what the transition is going to be for me never even flying in a small plane, and being totally out of aviation for over two decades, but Im going to do it. Thanks for the motivation your videos have given me and I look forward to the day of getting my private pilots license and eventually owning a Piper 140. I would love any advice from you or any of your veteran pilots and subscribers.
First off, thank you for your service. Secondly, thanks for watching and for commenting. Blackhawk pilot…that’s awesome. Just like being a Veteran, that’s quite the 1%’ers club title not a lot of people can say. How cool, I can only imagine the stories you have of your experience piloting the Blackhawk. I’m also exciting to hear your aviation bug is back and that you’re learning a new skill. The Cherokee 140 is a fantastic, stable platform for training and for building hours. We bought ours from a retired Naval Aviator that was located at KLZU just north east of ATL. I have family that lives in that area too. The only advice I have for your transition is to enjoy every moment of it. I’m not sure what the transition training will be but I can assure you your takeoffs and landings will be a little different than what you are previously used to😉. Best of luck to you in this journey to PPL.
@@blueyonder360 Thank you so much!! Keep making those videos
I like your twisty throttle and mixture as opposed to my quadrant with the lever on my 140. What year is yours? I have a 1970.
Thanks for watching and the comment. Ours is a 1966 and the twisty throttle style is called Vernier throttles. They were installed with the Avcon 180hp STC upgrade we have on the engine. I’ve become accustomed to that style of throttle and you’ll see me backing off or doing the twist during approach and landing and setting cruise power.
like the video i am based there
Thanks for watching and the comment. I like to fly into Class D airports to keep up on my radio work with tower controllers and I still got tripped up.
So cool! I’m (hopefully) going on my discovery flight in a Cherokee 140 on Thursday! I say hopefully because it got rescheduled 3 times. First and second time was due to weather, third was because the plane was in the shop. Hopefully it will happen on Thursday, right after exams end, it will be fun! Thank you for the video!
Thanks for watching. Maybe 4th time is the charm for this one. It’s best to pick a really good day for the discovery flight. You want to make sure everyone is going to feel comfortable and not concerned about bumps. Enjoy your flight
@@blueyonder360 yep! Thank you!
@@blueyonder3604th time wasn’t the charm, the plane is still in the shop. It got rescheduled for this Friday, hope it works out!
@@blueyonder360so it was rescheduled for Tuesday, I did the flight, it was SO COOL! I loved it. I got to takeoff and do some cool maneuvers! I’m continuing in flight training! I am so excited to get back in that plane.
@@4viationCentral that’s awesome. So glad to hear you had a great experience.
wish me luck, first annual in my cherokee 140
I hope everything goes well for ya.
First: Welcome back to the sky Second: 135 days is a LONG time. Glad you got her back. Unfortunately, I saw something in your video that scares me a little bit. And I feel I have to say something to you. 3:28 I don't see torque plates on engine with two cylinders removed. Search "Savvy Aviation Cylinder Work Risky Business" and watch the video. It's a long video and Mike Busch talks really slowly, so I like to watch at 2x. But seriously, watch the first 45 minutes of that video. If I were in your shoes, I would want to send an email to AOPA's "ask the A&Ps" podcast. Mike Busch is on that podcast. I'd ask them what to do next to make sure the engine is still fine. Honestly, I hope I'm grossly overreacting and this isn't an issue at all.
You have a bouncy attitude indicator.
Good eyes. I have a replacement on order that didn’t get installed during the annual. Since it’s VFR, it’s not a mandatory instrument.
How do you like that 140?
It’s a great training platform and perfect for two people. But if you want to carry four adults and bags for the weekend, this platform isn’t for those kinds of missions.
@blueyonder360 I have been looking into planes and as much as I like the stability of a high wing Cessna, the Pipers are about half the price, well depending on the avionics. So I have been looking, watching rather, more videos on the small Cherokees. Also seen you're only a little drive down the road.
@@kolbergone It’s pretty wild how much more Cessnas cost than Pipers. Both are very stable platforms but leads to the question of if you’re a high wing or low wing lover. We have a great backyard here in Colorado to explore either by air or by Jeep. We enjoy trail riding when we get a chance.
@blueyonder360 not sure what I am, just beginning this journey.
"i just told him for insurance purposes he couldn't be in the hangar." - the mechanic
Is it worth it to get a 1967 Piper pa28-140 for $30K just to use to get my PPL and sell it after? Will i be able to make back the cost of the original price plus any maintenance?
Good, but tough question to answer. I ended up purchasing 55R when I was about 20 hrs into my PPL flight training. I was having a hard time booking consistent time in flight school planes due to how busy my flight school was at the time. I came across this plane and felt like it was something I couldn’t pass up. And I knew I would be flying it after I got my PPL. In today’s market and not knowing any details of the ‘67 I would say it will retain its current value.
Way wide on the landing and an errogant apperance on income, why bring it up.
I don't know how I missed this video from you. I'm really glad you didn't just rely on the compression but also got a borescope. So many people let compression be the definitive status of the cylinders rather than look more deeply. Given the state of your valves, I think you're making the right call to pull the cylinders. And completely agree with owning a borescope and using it every time the sparkplugs are pulled. Savvy has a video on how to do a standard borescope inspection so that you can build an evolving picture over time. I also had to replace the lord mounts on my 140. The engine mounts alone probably wouldn't have been too crazy, but I decided to also install an engine monitor. If I'd have known that I was going to end up selling the airplane a few months later I certainly would not have installed an engine monitor. Sorry you're going through this. Your airplane is - by far - my favorite Cherokee 140 in existence. I'm actually in the process of writing a video about how much I admire your airplane. Not enough for me to help with the repair costs, though. So sorry. :) Hope the repair costs are within reason.
Thanks for the kind words. We really love this plane too and want to make sure we’re doing things correctly, so that we have comfort knowing the next owners will have a sound flying machine.
Which yolk mount do you have and what size ipad are you using? I ordered the sporty’s ram claw for my cherokee and the ipad clamp was so tight it broke my screen protector, lookin for a good replacement.
I use the iPad mini with Pivot case for protection and the Pivot case has a slide on/off connector to the yoke mount. It’s super easy to slide on/off. And I use the RAM mount components that attach to the yoke.
70 mph rotation?
Yeah, the book says for a no flap take off to accelerate to 50-60 mph then ease back on the yoke. Our field elevation is 5119 ft. and the book numbers are based off of sea level, so we accelerate a little more before she feels like she wants to fly.
Great video, appreciate the insight into this process and profession. Also love the “more you know” throw back. Makes me feel like a kid watching Saturday morning cartoons.
Fascinating!
I thought so too. Mark is very knowledgeable and easy to talk to.
@@blueyonder360 It's in the name.
The Cherokees I took dual in during the 1960s were placarded against intentional spins.
When a tug is hooked to it and the aircraft is being pushed back it’s very easy to exceed the turn limit and bend the horn. I’ve replaced/repaired quite a few of those in my 27 years as a GA mechanic. They can be repaired since it’s just a steel tube.
Thanks. It's possible since we've been towed to a hangar after we've left the airport and don't monitor it being transported at times.
It’s easy to do. I’ve done a few hundred inspections on every type of Piper from a Cub to a Cheyenne. Lots in the Cherokee and Seneca line. Great little airplanes. May I ask why the shop wants to have your engine mount reconditioned? That’s typically done at an engine change. Exterior surface corrosion can just be stopped with a rust converter and painted over.
@@planemaintenance3948 I didn’t get a good picture of it but there is a crack at one of the joints that had some corrosion.
After 40 plus years of flying professionally, now that I’m retired I find flying as a hobby just ridiculously expensive. I’m happy to spend my time touring the countryside on my motorcycle. The challenge of flying can be very gratifying to master and keep proficient! Happy flying!
Thanks for watching and for the comment. If you’re able to fulfill a childhood dream then the price tag that comes with it is a little more palatable, but you do have to add an extra 0 onto what you think it will cost versus what it ends up being.
Great video, although it hurts! These kinds of annuals are such a heart breaker! I hope you get it back soon!
Vector air not a good place they had my plane nine months charge me for things that when you went on my quote, had a really fight with them to get squared away won’t go back there again
I’m sorry to hear you had a bad experience with them. From my experience, they have been straight forward with what they have written up on our WO. Certainly a better experience for me than the last shop I was at in the metro Denver area.
Man I hope you don't get stung too badly with costs
Thanks for watching and the positive thoughts. I will do a full recap video with full cost of annual so stay tuned for that.
Nice video, good flight! I will always take a 700 FPM climb!
I don’t experience it that often, so I too will take it when I can get it.
I like the videos I am based at Erie Grumman Traveler at the hangers
Thanks for watching. Keep an eye out for me on the flight line and stop by to say hi. If I’m not flying, I’m likely washing our plane or watching other planes to their thing.
Nice job on the edit! Still using IMovie? What camera do you have on the wing?
Thanks for watching. I am still using iMovie. Haven’t made the jump to another software. Do you have one to recommend? I use the GoPro360 on the wing. I’m looking to get an adaptor for the tail and use it there.
Is the rotate then speed gain a high altitude procedure?
It’s more of a short field takeoff maneuver. I was just demonstrating that to my passenger. Wasn’t necessary but is a fun way to stay in ground effect after takeoff to gain speed then trade that speed for a swift accent.
@@blueyonder360 Thanks for the explanation! Great video!
Ok, loved the video. Yours always make me laugh. So many one liners and I love the dueling cockpit editing. Very nicely done!!!
