Hello, I follow Solar Foods for a few months and I was really excited about it. I told my friend about it, and he asked me a question: What is the difference between Solar Foods and algae farms? Both produce protein, absorb carbon dioxide from the air, but algae farms don’t need as much electricity. Could you explain the difference?
I want to invest. And I want to buy the solein product. Whenever I imagine realistic catastrophic global scenarios, these kind of technologies always seem to be one of the most important.

Logically, and with the application of reason, this makes sense and has elements of genius. But from a heart/soul point of view (my own!) I think it couldn't be more horrifying in terms of being another remove from the natural world , or the unprocessed natural world. This approach is tech tech tech, sterile and reliant on machinery. So much of modern conventional farming is, but for those who have ever grown their own food on the earth, and engaged with those distinct earthly dilemmas, this is more like a solution for space and apocalypse...not for every day living.
Absolutely see this as our future nutrition…I’m a Finn living in UK…extremely proud what you all are doing to save our beautiful planet from the distraction…no one will go hungry with Solein…thank you ❤

@@ninamariaDS why would the meat industry care? this is not going to replace meat or even affect the industry, I hope solein succeeds because of its potential for a cheap easy source of protein not to replace the meat I love to eat and will be eating with solein.

What is the cost?
Could you add in an atomic molecular equation to make the solein produce faster and faster
'... And nutrients'. Can you be more specific about what that means? Does this process still depend on ammonia, or is nitrogen cracking integrated into the bioreactor? It is definitely more sustainable than any other technology I have seen, but if you are dependent on ammonia then you absolutely cannot say you are making protein from air. I love the tech. The issue I have is that I don't see the economics of it working. If the US alone were to divert grain from animal feed to feeding people we would have food for an extra 800 million people anyway. There is no demand for this because we are not even close to a food shortage. It is political and economic will that causes famines and prevents rewilding, not 'farming isn't efficient enough'. This is extremely important tech for space habitation, particularly if you can integrate nitrogen fixation (and if you have then that is pretty important to put in the marketing). In order for the elements to be balanced, it would need to be producing oxygen as a byproduct, so it would not just be a food production system, it would be producing all the bulk products astronauts need. It isn't going to change the earth though, because there already easier things we could do in that direction that we are not doing.
So it is cheese made from hydrogen instead of lactose? That is reassuringly familiar (Your marketing is wrong. We have been using single celled cultures for food for a very long time in the form of cheeses and yogurts). Presumably there are swamp bacteria that already metabolise hydrogen, so no engineering required (I can see why you don't put that bit in your marketing :P). A couple of questions. How robust is the process? I would guess that the O H balance is set up so that parasitic bacteria have nothing to metabolise with. Is this correct, or do you have issues with losing batches to bad ecologies? Are your cultures stable? Can you simply seed one batch with the next sour dough fashion, or do you need to externally generate the seed colonies? If you were to be somewhat lazy with cleaning your mineral inputs (literally just throwing live poo in the mix), how likely would that be to ruin the process? It might be hard to sell product from a direct waste processing system, but if you fed it through a grasshopper farm people might tolerate it, never mind the animal feed applications. Have you tried introducing nitrogen fixing bacteria to the mix? The killer app for this tech would be if it could sidestep the haber process, even at an efficiency loss. For space applications in particular avoiding such a high pressure dangerous process could be a game changer. How well does it cope with intermittency in food supply? If this is able to operate purely off solar without a battery then it can be considerably cheaper. Being able to load manage the grid could get such setups very cheap energy. I assume you don't seperate the H and O streams, so storing them would be a no go. I guess you could produce and store them separately and have some storage at a complexity penalty. For Space based applications that are electrolysing for oxygen anyway, and you might as well pull off the same system. Super cool tech, and surprised I hadn't heard about it before. I guess conventional agriculture is still cheap enough that it is hard to compete with, even though this will be a necessary tech in the future. The more I think about it, the cultures are very protein rich due to the ammonia being the only source of excess hydrogen. Do you get a product less protein heavy if you make the process more anaerobic? Obviously you still need to provide some electron accepting oxygen for energy reasons, but I do wonder how much control over the process is possible to produce more of a staple foodstuff. Again I am thinking specifically for space applications.
What is the GI and lipid index on this and any pet food experiments?
how does it work?
It is basically yogurt, but instead of the bacteria metabolising lactose they metabolise hydrogen produced from electrolysis (apparently there are bacteria that can just do that!). The bacteria also need proteins, fats, and other sugars, so when presented with precursors and energy, they make them. By limiting the amount of oxygen available breaking down sugars and proteins for energy is limited, so a large portion of the input energy is converted into useful food.

According to the amount of liters in a bioreactor needed to feed 6 astronauts. If we want to feed 8 billion people we will need a sum of >54 million liters distributed in bioreactors. This is equivalent to >21,400 Olympic pools. The largest bioreactors have a capacity of 250,000 liters, so 214,000 of these bioreactors will be needed. I don't know how much a bioreactor that size costs, but assuming they cost $1 million each, that's $214 billion in total. Doesn't seem like much to feed the world. I want to work with it. Would you finance my study?
I already have two studies on this topic. I estimated a few trillions of costs to produce protein requirements of the whole population. The titles are below, just search on google. A company called liberation labs is currently building a 600'000 litre facility in Richmond, Indiana. They literally laid the foundations last month. They hope to scale upto 4'000'000 litres.
$1million per reactor is excessive, given these would be mass produced. Far more significant is that fact that this is not using sunlight directly as the energy source, and it still needs other inputs. You need large solar farms to power them. Taking the 20% efficiency at face value would require an average power of 500W per person, which means around 2kW solar panel due to intermittency. You would struggle to get that for less than $1000 per person, so ~$8 trillion is probably the minimum cost for that side of things. You also have to factor in that this is using ammonia as an input (if it were fixing nitrogen I imagine they would specifically call it out, because that would be a big deal). It is more efficient than most other routes to food, but you are probably still talking an extra $200 per person per year ammonia production. Plants photosynthesise really inefficiently, but we are not nearly at the point where we are better off harvesting the energy ourselves and doing something like this.

Land is cheap in Libya and the system is largely independent of infrastructure. The most expensive part of the setup is the solar farms required to power it, so you want to be somewhere that they are as efficient as possible.

A product on a scale like this needs to be backed by people with actual money. This isn't some crowdfunding novelty thing. So, they field tested it in places where people with money go to eat. Give it time, and don't start moping right at the very beginning of the entire process. Something can only be mass produced once it has found its way into the people's minds, hearts, and stomachs. I'm way more interested in feedback from a wide range of people after a long term mainly solein based diet. I don't care whether it can be used in one good meal or not without altering the taste. if it has any negative long-term effects on health or digestion, it's worthless. also, if it turns out to be the potato of our age, as it claims to be, are there plans to open-source the process? I understand that the research and investment costs must be covered, but a new solution to world hunger and a replacement for agriculture would be really problematic in the hands of a single company once people start to rely on it. for now, patenting the bacteria makes sense, just wondering if there are plans to allow people to independently use this on their own, as it used to be with the potato you referenced on your website.

I see what you mean but most lifeforms on this planet haven't evolved to eat pure things and even if it is pure protein, things could be missing that are necessary to properly digest it well in the long run. drinking only chemically pure H2O isn't the most healthy thing either.
