FYI it is a good idea with screws that go into plastic to first carefully turn the screw counterclockwise while pushing the screw in slightly. You should feel or hear a " click" and this should mean you have aligned the screw with the original thread the screw cut, and not be cutting another set of threads inadvertantly, and weakening the fitting

Don't forget the upper Heim joint nextime....and use heat when you remove the bearings and bushings...heat is your friend. Also, don't spin your finger around those uncaged needle bearings...push and pull your finger over them when applying grease...no circular motions....those little buggers can still fall out. Not being critical, you made a great video for the average guy...

If you are not pressed for time, put the bearings in the freezer or on ice (inside their plastic pouches of course) over night. Use a small propane/MAPP torch to heat the hub to about 58 - 60*C (or hot enough to only be able to hold your hand on it for about a second or two) just before you want to install the bearings. Then use the same process you’ve shown in the video. You’ll have about a five minute window before the surfaces start returning to their original clearances. That time will be cut down to about two minutes once you start pressing the bearing in, but it will be noticeable in the ease at which you can press them in. Good video. Thank you for posting.

Thanks for this video! Couple of questions: what ratio do you use for more intermediate, or even hard pack tracks? What was your stock ratio? Did you have to adjust your chain length by going to a ‘longer’ ratio? For ref. I ride a ‘15 SX with stock ratio (13/48) and the tracks I ride vary from sand to semi hardpack. Thanks!

No problem! I usually pick a ratio that suits the track i'm riding the most best. I use that ratio on other tracks as well (cost effective ;) ). The stock ratio was 13/50. There was quite a noticeable difference on the chain adjustment going from a 13 to a 14 sprocket. I had enough room to adjust to the right tension, but it's possible that your chain is too short when you go to a longer ratio. It's also good to keep in mind that it's best to mount new sprockets with a new chain. That way you get the most life out of both. Hope this helps!

This is a 2017 250sx. So that explains the differences, compared to your 2014. Any big differences? Thanks for letting me know, glad it helped!

So, the 2021 and 2022 KTM 250 SX now comes stock with 14/49 combo

Interesting, thanks for letting me know! It feels really good, so it makes sense. But still it could feel different compared to mine, if the gearbox ratios changed on the ‘21 and ‘22.

I had a terrible time getting the old bearing races out of the long link piece. I ended up having to chisel between them and the aluminum and prying them out that way.

    • @MrDen119

They can be a real pain in the a$$. Depends on how long they have been in there and the conditions they have been in can really lock them in to place. I had to use quite some force as well. For the next time, some heat can make the job easier as well, heating the link with a gas burner for example.
