Martyn Bennett Tongues Of Kali
Here’s an unexpected wee gem for you! Did you know Martyn Bennett’s track ‘Tongues of Kali' from his revolutionary second album Bothy Culture actually had two music videos made? Neither did we!
This lost treasure has only just resurfaced, thanks to the brilliant efforts of director Duncan MacDonald and with the help from Margaret Cameron at MG Alba. This, the first video made, was shot in a single day back in 1997 and took place on Edinburgh's Portobello Beach and at the legendary La Belle Angele nightclub. The video was made in the days of early non-linear editing software, so rendering took a gruelling 12 hours-something that would only take minutes today!

Martyn Bennett - Tongues Of Kali
Просмотров 6 тыс.7 лет назад
The video is a playful, trippy homage to a 1990s club scene and fittingly surreal but hasn’t been seen much since perhaps the last millennium. Tongues of Kali was the only Martyn Bennett track to receive the MTV treatment. It was filmed in early 1998 at the Arches in Glasgow and directed by David Mackenzie. David has accomplished much since this early project. His 2016 film success, Hell or Hig...

What A Voice: Article 12

Article 12 Project. The name What a Voice was chosen to highlight the fact that, in spite of having an extremely strong cultural ethos, members of the Gypsy/Traveller community still experience huge levels of discrimination when trying to make their voices heard; and continue to be marginalised here in the UK to this day. It is hoped that both the exhibition and the video will be instrumental i...

Phil and Andy were asked by the Trust to record the remix through an educational engagement with students at the City of Edinburgh Music School, where Martyn had studied himself. The students were involved in re-creating samples to be used in the track and in observing the process from start to finish, from composition, studio recording of the various and many instruments, and in the technical ...

Music from David Harrower's play 'Knives In Hens'. The track is called 'What Am I Doing Here' and was shown on Ceol Tacsi featuring Tommy Smith, Jim Sutherland, Donald Shaw & Manus Lunny.
Excellent. Was lucky enough to see Mr Bennett live a few times back in the day. Genius.
Wonderful stuff, great to see. When I first played this track to a friend of mine. He jokingly commented that the "dialogue" sounded like me on the telephone. To which I replied.. Well that's funny because the next track on the album (Aye) Sounds like you on the other end of the phone.. Ha Ha.. He loved it all the same though. As do I, and still do to this day.
😂 🙌
Martyn was a good customer of mine in the mid to late 90's in the outdoor shop I worked in, it was always a magical experience to see & speak to him, he was an incredible talent and had a really gentle soul. Taken from the world far too soon and is sorely missed
mindblowing
Fucking banger 💥💥
Could somebody please tell me what instruments he starts playing at 1.55, similar to clarinet or oboe, and also at 3.20, beautiful sounds. I apologise for my ignorance - are they traditional Scottish instruments? Thank you. ❤🩹🦘
It is a chanter- the element of a set of bagpipes that you play the melody on. Like that, without the bag and drones, it sounds rather different!
i put my hands in the air. i dared.
Is central Uist shown is this at 30 secs?
missed

A unique and wonderful musician and lovely guy....Tragically taken too soon. His music however is timeless and his family can be proud and hopefully get some comfort knowing he moved so many people....and still does. He was and is loved by so many...
Have the CD of Hardland. One of my most prized possessions...

Still the BEST music I've ever known...moves my soul still....
I still remember the day I bought the CD. Never heard of him. Just thought it looked cool, had a high chance of being good. That was 20 years ago. Still love the album and love and miss Martyn. We're lucky he was able to do so much. Hallaig still makes me cry every time.
The genius of Martyn Bennett...I still think about him often. A revolutionary, groundbreaking, paradigm shifting musician. Still quirky and relevant in 2019
Just heard him for the first time on a re-run of "Machair". Referred to as "Acidcroft" Wonderful. Such a pity he's not here now. Love it.
How do you get the Original of this (not live)?
The same Dixon MS tune is used on a track called “How it got there” on the CD “Hardland” by Martyn Bennet and Martin Low. Sadly this CD is hard to come by.
I was at this gig, seems like yesterday, great times, great tunes!
Thank you! Longer version: www.martynbennett.com/2012%20OLD/media_videoClips_01.html
'Sivtatva’ and ‘Saktitatva’ ~ Lord Shiva and Holy Mother Kali ~ Father’s semen in mother’s womb, both combined. Next I am born ~ ‘Sadasiva’ which means a continuous hilarity within my body. Next comes ‘Iswartatwa’ ~ Man becomes God and he is so made (One is All); ‘Sadvidyatatva’ ~ All these I am ~ All is One ~ I am all these, which is in action. What is that? Suppose in the spiritual world whatever will reveal within the brain will be flashed among the human race and by such phenomenon the world will get real benefit. ♡ Sri Jibankrishna ♡ Diamond ♡
quel talent . époustouflant

I am proud to say I met Martyn back in the late 90s and even saw his band perform at the Metropolis in Montreal. Great sounds from a great multi instrumentalist. And a great piper too! Part 4 of the Handshaker? Not that easy...

Wonderful! Memories from his shows at the Fruitmarket came flooding in. An incredible talent, sorely missed.
Heard this track in late 90's and got impressed immediately. It was high time that somebody used it for something like this. Grreat!
