Paul, The Jazz Accordionist

Hi, I'm Paul / Paolo, a musician from the age of three, thanks to my Aunt Velia who first picked-up on my love of, and talent for, music. She noticed how, still a toddler, I swung and swayed to the music emanating from her radio. She watched as I grabbed a wooden spoon and started beating on her pots and pans in time with the music I heard.
A smart woman, she took me to her jewler's daughter who had just graduated from Bologna's Conservatory of Music and asked her to see if I was musically gifted. The young woman sat me down on her piano, taught me "solfeggio" and I was soon playing the piano with both hands. A few years later I was along with other child prodigies selected to play at a fundraising concert for Italian war orphans in Rome. The concert had been scheduled for the summer of 1953. But that winter my career would be cut short by a life-changing event.
Mother and I were about to be reunited with my Father in America aboard the SS Independence!

"All of Me" is a popular song and jazz standard written by Gerald Marks and Seymour Simons in 1931. The melody has an ABAC structure, and is written in the key of B-flat major. There is a 20-bar introductory verse, but this is routinely omitted. Paul's version is written in the key of C Major and the twenty bar introduction is played in its entirety as arranged by J. H. Sedlon for the accordion.

Hi, I haven't sung in years. And I made a half-hearted attempt to sing the song I made up to celebrate the birth of our little grandnephew "Mattia." But you are right I am (or was) a second tenor starting way back when still in Grammar School at St. Augustine's in Larchmont, New York until more recently when I sang with the Modena Cathedral Choir.

Thank you Calvin for your comment. My more recent performances are taken from the base side and you can see them well it is a 96 base accordion with 37 keys. The brand name of the Accordion is Castellani but I will be going down to the factory in Castelfidardo, Italy soon to pick up a new Paolo Soprani-brand accordion in September. Take a look at my. playing, "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" with a good view of my left hand playing the bases!

You are also right about the difficulty: It is not easy to play. Plus like many musicians I like to ad lib as I play usually from the second time around. So much depends on the mood I'm in when I play. Some days you are on cloud nine; and some days you're mind and fingers are elsewhere?

Sure I have literally tons of music accumulated over a lifetime. And should I not have the score for what you request I can always try playing it “by ear”: What I can whistle, I can play. Although no longer as sharp as I used to be I am still able to “pick it up”. So please go ahead and request what you like.

Hi, Michael, and thank you for the kind words. I have not been on RUclips much, nor have I uploaded anything new but I sure hope to over the next few days. I'm working on some new pieces. No one is ever too young or too old to learn to play an instrument. One proven technique is to play whatever it is you like or want to play, one hand at a time. Once you are satisfied with the results, play the same piece with both hands, over and over again until you are satisfied you are playing it as written. Up the tempo, if need be when you are ready. Good luck and have fun. I find few things are as satisfying or relaxing as executing well a good piece of music. Enjoy!
