My channel is a mixture of hiking & adventures. Also I like to do funny short videos. I sometimes like to do cinematic films & on the odd occasion I do filmmaking gear reviews.
I meet up with a famous Somerset man who likes walking
This time i travel to Wrington village in Somerset near to Bristol Airport to meet up with Darren from "Somerset Man Walking". He kindly shows me around his lovely little village telling me about the history of some of its buildings. A small railway also once ran through here & Darren shows me whats left of it. Darren has his own RUclips channel which has his brilliant videos on it & i advise you to give him a look.

I really enjoyed this, the conversation felt so natural between you two. It's a shame the old railway isn't going to become part of the strawberry line - I love our local Bristol to Bath Cycle Path - especially the bit the Avon Valley Railway uses. They're such nice easy walks and the cafe's like the Warmley Waiting Room make for nice little treats on the way 😊
@@JessesGrandDaysOut Yeah you are right Jessie. The line would of been lovely as a walking /cycle path. Unfortunately I think parts of it have been built over now. It was lovely to walk around the village with Darren. He knew a lot about the area & i loved interviewing him. 😊😊

As someone who lived in Wrington for six years (and behind the Golden Lion), I really enjoyed this. Much history I didn't already know and another channel to follow! 😉 I'd often think of what could've been, had they saved and restored the old railway line. Wrington is not well served by public transport to get in/out of the village and the lanes can be hazardous for cars, cyclists, walkers and horse riders. Hope you've had a good Christmas, Martin and all the best for 2025! 🙂
@@WalksWithOlly Hi Olly. Thanks for commenting. Hope you are OK. Wrington is a lovely little village. I'd never been there until recently. It is a bit difficult to get to but it's a nice place. Darren is very knowledgeable about the village & i loved interviewing him. He's quite new to RUclips & his channel is worth checking out. Have a great new year & 2025 mate. 😊😊

Really enjoyed this!! Fantastic conversation and so interesting! I can smell that Lifebouy soap! My parents used to buy that! My gran used Carbolic soap or coal tar soap. Both very distinct smells. I spotted the noddy shots! Very good! Really nice collab!

@@JessesGrandDaysOut This was 18 years ago. I'm not sure if I could do that now. I remember deliberately falling off to make the film more comedy like. It was good fun though. 😊
This looked so cool, I have a feeling I've seen a similar display at a garden centre before but this looks like it has more animations than I remember - it's also boxed in rather than out in the open so probably somewhere different. It reminds me of Babacombe Model Village but on a smaller scale (gosh - I really need to get back there soon). 😊

@@Somersetmanwalking I found this on my computer hard drive. Its from 2006 & shot on a camcorder. It was also in March when I filmed it. I did get some funny looks. 😊😊

I've not been to Whitehall Garden Centre in ages, love the animatronics - the dog looked so realistic. Thanks for showing us around. 😊
@@JessesGrandDaysOut I dont think it was as good as previous years actually. Before Covid they would have an ice skating rink & one year they had a steam train coming out of the wall for a Harry Potter display. Its still a lovely place to visit every Christmas though. 😊😊

Those Christmas lights are fabulous and the white light theme works very well which brings a lovely old England feel to the village. Was the George pub open? It was closed a while back but I have spent some happy hours in there back in the 70s. One spoiler for Lacock, cars parked in every street and hardly any in the 70s.
@@mmwaashumslowww7167 Actually we didn't go into the pub as we were just trying to kill time before we went to the garden centre nearby. We didn't stay too long in the village as it was the evening of the storm last weekend & it still was windy. 😊

@@CraftyClaireTutorials Thanks. It is a lovely place but can get busy. It was much better around 10 years ago. They would have an outdoor ice rink & the moving displays were more elaborate. I suppose cost has to come into it. We still love visiting every Christmas though. 😊😊
Marvellous! The things that they can create these days. Never saw anything like this when I was a kid and just some old santa sitting in the foyer of the parish hall, surrounded by cotton wool and fairy lights. I had no idea that Lacock would have put on a display like this having been there recently. Good choice Martin 👌

Merry Christmas Martin. This was lovely. Aw your face looked so disappointed with the lack of lights around the back of the Abbey 😂 Although it puts Bristol to shame.
@@NicolaExplores Thanks Nicola. Hope you guys have an amazing Christmas. It was a bit of a disappointment seeing as though in previous years the whole Abbey would be lit up. The food prices were extortionate as well. I watched another RUclips video the other day where someone was talking about the "sheds with holes in them " selling overpriced poor quality food. I dont think I could of done a video like that as I'm not that keen on slagging things off big time. I might just have a little grumble & that's enough for me. Maybe the stalls holders were being charged a lot of money for their spot & have to pass the cost onto the customer. 😊😊

@@andrewharris1837 Thankd. Yeah you are right. A lot of the stuff was overpriced but then people don't have to buy it. I dont get why some people buy food etc & then moan about the price. If you don't like it then simply don't buy it. I just usually look around & rarely buy anything. 😊😊
Brilliant video Martin! Very festive and Christmassy. I have never been brave enough to go to Bath Christmas Market, because of the sheer number of people that I have heard about that go to it, but it didn't seem overly busy when you were there. I love that little building too, but have no idea what it is called! Love your additional 'snow' effects! Works really well. I really liked your low angle shots too. Great stuff! Take care, Paul
@@westcountrywanderings Thanks Paul. We are not too keen on big crowds either that's why we visit on the evening but a lot of the stalls did pack up quite early. Maybe because it was a Tuesday & not Friday or Saturday. I like to experiment with different angles & the low shot is one of my favourites. I dont know what the little building is called but it is a lovely little cake & coffee shop. I have loads of "snow " overlays & thought it be fun to do. Notice how the "snow" comes down more heavy the further into the video it gets. Have a great Christmas mate. 😊

@@pete-c Thanks. I was a little disappointed though as there stalls were packing up early & I only had a chance to film some of them. I wish I'd gone on Friday or Saturday now as there would of been more going on. It was still nice to visit though as its only 15 minutes away for us. 😊
Always love Bath Christmas Market, a lovely festive video Martin - it was odd they didn't light up all sides of the abbey this year but still very pleasant to wander around.

The walk through the arcade had a great feel to it and everything was a night time amber once you reached the end. Certainly no skimping on the lights or power, despite the extra cost.

I remember Butlins Minehead in the 70s. My parents took my sister and myself here on many occasions and we absolutely loved it. We would save our coppers all year and blow the lot in the penny arcades . Does anyone remember the full size steam locomotives in the car park ? How cool was that ? Thanks for sharing.
@@ShaunD-xu1ns Yes I do remember the locomotive in the car park. I do have a little bit of film of it that my dad filmed then. My sister fell from the steps going up to it. 😊😊
@MartinPopeFilmmaker Ah yes, very little health and safety in those days . I can remember coming home from Butlins with the odd bruise or graze, mainly from the roller skating rink. Many happy memories Martin, thanks so much for allowing me to revisit my childhood .
