Plan your summits on the air excursions now. You only have a little over 3 minutes for the totality, so you want to reach your summit ahead of time to enjoy the view. This short 15 minute video provides an overview of portable amateur radio with a focus on readiness capabilities for VHF communications with a handheld radio such as the Lanch HG-UV98 and a DIY J-Pole antenna. HF communications with a Elecraft KX-3 as part of a Summits On The Air activity is also demonstrated by Nolan N2WU. Steve K2GOG provides the discussion and material presented in this video.
I've been using this antenna for years. I built mine using Military stranded steel commo wire, since copper stranded wire will break in no time. The military commo wire has been up many years. I get great reports living in Arizona, all the way to Alaska, to the north, and all the way to Missouri, Texas, and sometimes even Florida and new York with hams directional antennas. Basically, I can cover most of the USA. 80m/40m and an MFJ, ANTENNA TUNER. I can hit almost anywhere.
