We are Sealcentre Pieterburen, one of the oldest and largest seal rescue centers in the world. For years we have a passion for seals and their environment. A clean and healthy Wadden Sea is very dear to us. This unique piece of nature has the status UNESCO World heritage and we should treat it accordingly; for now, for later and for our children.
On our campus and field station live and work volunteers and researchers from all over the world. By our collective passion and multidisciplinary approach we form a learning community. We transfer our knowledge and passion to the public and make them aware of our mission.
All seals at the Sealcentre are wild animals and none of them is held in captivity. All seals are released again into their natural environment after their period of rehabilitation.

Introducing our new home: the WEC 🦭🏡 (English)
Sealcentre Pieterburen will move to a new location: the WEC (World Heritage Center Waddenzee). Our new place will be in the harbor of Lauwersoog, which is both convenient and overlooking to our main subject: the sea.
In this video you'll see an introduction of the WEC. The seal hospital will be a big part of it.

De naam Balloon klinkt vrolijk, maar heeft een verdrietige oorsprong. Half juni werd de zeehondenpup gevonden onder trieste omstandigheden: zonder moeder en sabbelend op een koord van een wensballon. Ze was al de vijftigste (!) verstrikte zeehond die we dit jaar hebben gevonden, terwijl het totaal vorig jaar 38 was. Denk aan dit trieste verhaal als je ooit overweegt om wensballonnen op te laten...
