Making a Sapphire D20 from a Cold War Crystal!
I finally cut another D20 on my CutKit! This sapphire was meant to be used to defend aircraft from heat-seeking missiles but didn't quite make it. It went much smoother than my first one and I really like how it came out. If you'd like to purchase this D20 you can check it out on GemsofScience.com , and to learn more about the cutkit and how you can start cutting gems for under $500 check out www.facet.ing .

You said *"Its heat resistant and hard UNLIKE SILICON"* ... wrongfully. Silicon wont melt unless you put it in a pure oxygen enbiroment AND crank the heat up into the thousands of degrees... and its literally harder or as hard as glass 😂 (seeing as theyre made the same way from the same element) The only time it SEEMS to be "not hard" is when its printed in a sheet a few microns thick. Then it can bend (like a thin sheet of metal can bend) but also like a sheet of metal... ITS STILL HARD just flexy NileRed just made a short where he mamages to melt silicon in his lab .... after spending (i think more than) 10 grand on some crazy machine that can accomplish it.
Silicon won't melt but heat shock can easily shatter it while moissanite is very resistant. It is about hardness 7, while moissanite is 9.5 (which is several times harder than 7 in linear terms.)
Double edge…
One of the highest known verdet constants of any material. Named after Émile Verdet...very weirdly ironic given that his surname is french for GREEN.
Is this a full grown lab stone or do these form naturaly and are treated someway? Beautyfull and interesting stone non the less. Cheers
@Lapidarydiary this one is fully lab grown--alas, earth's geochemistry doesn't allow for this kind of composition
Give me 6 months I will finally buy from your store when i get my money up
When I first saw it I thought it was sum very inappropriate 😂
I'm really happy you guys sell these small calibrated gems. I'm planning to get some small GAGG gems to use as accent stones.
What’s the price range on these
You can see the listing on my bio link, they're not super pricey
Ok I'm curious but what does a polished design look like? Dusty gray isn't inspiring me so far... perhaps high dispersion sparkle,?
@@christopherwells372 I cut one into a custom coffin in my next video--it's not the most performant design but it shows some dispersion
i have a problem... im from spain so i cant get that vevor model... is there any way to buy it in spain¿? i have a tanzanite waiting...
The other similar model will work too, it's juat a bit more difficult to read the vertical angle
Gave you a follow. Thanks for your interest in my laser rods, you got me to give your channel a look
Sweet!
Super neat! I guess it looks better with colour change gems, but I kinda want to see a more "bone-like" grey or off-white version.
Where did you find the diagram for this cut? Did you create it yourself? Its beautiful and I would love to try it out!
Thanks, I made it myself. It's going up on my site tonight, just need to make the page
@@AngryTurtleGems Awsome! Can't wait to check it out!
so beautifuul
Wow!
Ohhh i love that design. I just bought some black CZ and have been thinking about what to do with it.
I think it's beautiful
I'm not sure I want a vevor machine, would the rest of the cutkit work with other faceting machines?
It works with similar machines built to the same general spec (there seem to be at least two factories making these, maybe more). Some parts like the laps, rough and polishing compound are more universal but getting the kit just for them probably doesn't make sense. Have you decided on a model to get?
@@AngryTurtleGems ah, ok. I haven't decided, so I'll just check when the decision is more relevant
Gorgeous! Hope to get a cut kit sometime next year!
I wish I saw this earlier, since I've already purchased the older more problematic model of the machine. Nonetheless, I have placed an order on your mast, which I think is the most critical component in these machines that needs replacing. Thank you for making these available!
so pretty! please post the cut stone!
@@meguelzin-1560 thanks! Working on it now, it will hopefully go up today or tomorrow
thats a lovely cut
Nice broo 😎 so good to see the cut kit in use. The one i purchased has been working wonderfully! Thank you so much!
Aw man they’re selling cruxite now huh
I would love to see a three carat ring made out of pixel cut
I want one of those gems! Is it Ruby?
@@spooks2086 thanks! Yes, it is a lab ruby
I love all of it, from origin to end product
Sir, the production quality of this video and the gem shouldn't be allowed! I can't stop watching it... It's mesmerizing!
It's beautiful. What is that cut called?
Thanks! I call it the Bloody Tear, I still need to get it formatted right but it will go up on our site when I do
This is so awesome
@@AngryTurtleGems It is magnificent
Can you make these with your kit?
@thepsychotix yup, I cut this on a cutkit. You do need an 80 index gear, and then adding the numbers of course requires more equipment too
I didn't realise the space shuttle toured Europe 😂
i appreciate you leaving the sounds of the grinder just rippin away. it made the video unwatchable. out of curiosity, how much did you pay to push this video with no views from a channel with no subscribers onto the front of my youtube home page? i mean, i've got college projects from covid times with more views.
do we know exactly WHAT is inducing the phosphorescence in this material? lattice defects? excess oxygen? contaminants?
I do not unfortunately--there are a few things that can promote it based on what I've read but it's unclear what the cause is in this case.
Those sapphire rods were hollowed out and made into a cesium vapor lamp with peak power of 120kw and an average power of 15kW. I got ahold of one of the counter measures devices at a ham fest years ago ❤
I know hes skilled but he made that d20 on a cutkit, thats impressive
Aw thats sad. Hope he makes oder made a video about it
@@D3nn1s thanks. I mailed it to him a while back so fingers crossed
My kit arrived yesterday, and today I followed this video to cut my first gem! I rushed a bit out of excitement, so the fit and finish of my stone leaves a lot to be desired, but I'm shocked how well it turned out! My main struggle was understanding where best to set the height of the cutter, and keeping consistent angles when moving from cutting to polishing on the different facets. I'm hyped to do more!
@@imadeathing91 congratulations! It sounds like you're off to a great start--soon those things will be instinctual
I was so glad to see this video today, I'm not at a point where I could get into faceting but someday soon I will. Thank you for your videos!
Awesome job. It looks great
I got my cutkit last month just saving up a bit for the 80 gear and some dice rough
Deffinitly has an interesting effect with the numbers. Nice job. Cheers
It’s beautiful
first i guess? loving these facets!
That's an extraordinary color. I've never seen this material before. They must've gotten this idea from ruby, whose chromium ion doublet at 694nm exhibits the same pressure shifting behavior.
Interesting. I´m not into lab made gems but this fluoressence stuff might have it´s uses. It does look cool under a black light so i´d rather drink from that in a club than a regular glass. If i would still be clubbing that is. Cheers
@@Muonium1 yup, as I understand it it's slightly better than ruby in this application and slowly starting to take over
I made one natural .
Gonna have a resock on the cutkit anytime soon?
@Ryan-br7jk yeah, I am just getting the last couple orders out before the next round of preorders
You've gone nuclear!!!!
Yeah, from all of those different gems this is second most impressive after rutile. Why are these colors there? Is gem two-colored or is it some strange internal reflection light altering magic?
It is aggressively fluorescent and particularly responsive to blue light, so depending on the light path and background color you see more red or more green
Yasssss. I've been looking for some larger specimens. I just set my largest, which is 10mm. The link just brings me back here 😢🕊🕊🕊
Oh yeah, the bio link situation on yt is odd, but going to www.gemsofscience.com should work
