ok 4:25 was just crazy lol
Dont let the core of the cable get too cool while setting the welds. Also if you would have forge weld each one first then stagger them to create less space for scale
Great guide! Thank you
Do you sell froes?
Not at the moment as I am setting up a shop in New Zealand currently!
Bought the same vice about 3 hours ago..... i also was wondering if the knob came off the back bit so i can clean the thread, thanks for the vid frome the uk👍
Ribbon burners are a fad. They work so well because they are forced induction. Make a regular forced induction burner and you will have a superior heat source. I have a 2 burner forge with burners I built myself using a .025 mig tip. I forge at 4 psi and forge weld at 6 psi. I used a 75 cfm blower motor for the air source. Forge On!!!
Amazing❤
Man stick to your day job.. That was hard to watch. Have you ever heard of a wire wheel??!? Jeez it was lije watching a 3 year old try and put a round peg in a square hole.
Nice video, im looking at one of these myself.
You might want to consider removing that piece welded to the jaw spring. It is restricting the compression along the entire length of the spring as it is designed to do. With that plate welded to the spring,it is restricting full length movement and concentrating the compression to a small area that will eventually cause the spring to crack at that point. Otherwise very nice job.
By now I'm sure you've discovered that running the motor as slow as you were showing us puts serious overload on the motor. Most VFD RUclips video's caution the viewer about reduced cooling air flow at low speeds. This because the fan is integral to the motor spindle. What those RUclips vid's never seem to mention is the slower fan is only a small part of the issue. VFD's employ PWM along with varying the Line Frequency. Most manufacturers control this by varying the Carrier frequency that produces the PWM. They usually set this to deliver maximum torque @ 50 - 60Hz. . Problem is this setting will dramatically increase input current at very low frequencies. If your not careful your motor will emit smoke if run for long periods at 10 to 20Hz ! Wakodahatchee Chris
You used the wrong turminals those round fittings you “ground down”
Thanks for your reviews. Looking at upgrading from my Princess Auto 2x28 and nexus is only about 40 minutes from me. Just trying to see if I can actually fit a 2x72 in my space. But the nexus price point I just might have to make space.
This is easier then I thought thank you
Sorry I should say I tempered at 400 degrees F not C!
Thanks for making this. I just ordered the motor from your link. It's hard to find a decent priced 3 phase in canada.
The heat definitely saved you time. The liquid wrench works just gonna take time as you've documented. Nice
Thanks for sharing! I take it froes aren’t typically hardened?
They don’t have to be as the large wedge shape and use on just wood to split does not require it to be hardened
👍
Thanks for the review, I'm eyeballing a Nexus for my small workshop/garage and I'm heavily overthinking it.
It is definitely a great addition, grinding steel, brass, aluminum, sanding all kinds of wood etc. I was way overthinking it for about 6 months before purchase and continued to for many months after purchase until I got enough use out of it to say, yeah, this was waaaaaay worth it.
Does nexus have any contact wheel attachments? I see you have another smaller wheel?
Hey, yeah there is a small wheel attachment set that I have purchased, steel wheels, I think rubber coated would be a better option but I haven’t seen them on Nexus. I was used my deflector wheel that came with my small wheel set, as a contact wheel, 2”. They used to offer a large contact wheel, 10-14” but I don’t think they do anymore. Large number of belts as well!
Great job! keep it up! I know you are another Canadian brother, so i am wondering where you got your jigs for grinding. thanks again! ps my Nexus grinder is here this week! i got the motor from the same site as you, got my vfd, and I am going to watch your video to see how to wire this bad boy up!
That's awesome and I'm glad to hear, let me know how you like it! I just made that little jig, I have since made a much nicer file guide with carbide faces, I ordered the carbide from Travers Tool Co. and when it shows up in an upcoming video i will make sure to show case it a little bit! :)
do you watch anything from Green Beetle? he does some really interesting work,
Yes! Been watching his videos for many years, love his stuff!
What you do to close those gaps in the cable is Before you weld all of your four bundles together you take each bundle of cable do a pretty good heat stick it in your vice and twist that cable tight following its current twist and then stack your four bundles and weld them all together then go to for your first forge weld. But i’m sure you know that by now
Haha yeah! Thanks for the tip though. I did think of doing that here except for my pieces of cable we’re not very long for what I was trying to do and there is potential material loss from that twisting since approx 3/4 will be held in the vise and 3/4” in the twisting wrench, cooling down and not forge welding or twisting. Losing 1.5” on each piece is just something I didn’t want to do. But, with thicker cable it’s definitely a good thing!
I have the 2hp iron horse motor from the same place. Is it safe to assume the wiring should all be the same? Also I saw you mentioned in a different comment that you used 12/3 and 4 to future proof it. Meaning you all you’d have to to do is reconfigure the vfd and switch the plug for the wall if you end up switching to 230? Thanks for making this video, helped me out a ton!
As long as you are running the 2hp motor on 110V it should all be the same. I remember reading that 2hp motors or higher require 220V? But I could be mistaken. Look in booklets that come with the VFD but I am fairly sure it just throttles the motor down to 1.5hp if you run 110V vs 220V coming out of the wall. This should not be a problem. If you can't find anything definitive, let me know and I will look some stuff up as well and get back to you! And yes you're correct about the future proofing. It would require the thicker gauge wiring for 220V.
@@athomeforge2140 The guy never replied to you. Regardless, running a 2HP motor on 120VAC is nuts! Waaaay too much current draw at that line voltage. Wakodahatchee Chris
Cool video...what steel did you use...

@@athomeforge2140 Thank you.
Great job bud really enjoyed watching you make the sword can't wait to see more from you!! 👍👍
How'd the wood not burn when you were blowtorching it?
It did burn, thats why its black! it just takes a lot of heat to really burn through a piece of wood and this just chars the surface and creates a protective layer. It's a technique used in Japanese architecture to prevent bugs from eating the wood. They take one bite and it tastes gross so they stop. It also looks cool
I've been looking to move into a bigger shop and offer bigger knife/sword making courses with 2 or 3 students and I was looking to buy a couple more grinders. I'm really glad I stumbled on your videos, you've helped make my decision for me. I just subscribed to your channel. Thank you very much!
Thanks a lot, that's why I make the videos. I try to get as much info as possible before purchasing and didn't see any reviews online of this grinder so I figured I would help others out!
Kind people don't need or want to video what they do for others cuz they are doing it for the people not for themselves.
🤝👍👍👍👍
Hey, I am most likely buying the NG3 with a 3 phase 1.5hp motor and vfd. I am in ontario. I am concerned about power. I have a plug that goes to my panel and is 20amp. Do you know if this will work with my power? thanks for the good video.
Yeah you will be fine. Mine runs to a 15 amp circuit and I have not experienced any problems with that!
@@athomeforge2140 amazing! Well it’s time to drop some cash! Expensive but it’s time to move on from my 2x36 multi tool grinder. I wish the vfd was cheaper ha. I’m getting the same set up as you. Thanks!
Thank you sir
Your first effort is better than mine. In my valley South Africa, I countered the freezing of the bottle by placing it in a big drum of water. Looking forward to your next video.
I have the same grinder and I agree 100%. I've had it for a little over a year now as well and its held up quite well. I bought a cheep used motor 1.5hp, but single phase so no variable speed. so far so good but I wish I had the option to slow things down. Hard to beat 40$ though. I also wish I had the option to tilt, especially when using the small wheels. All in all very pleased with the grinder and it's likely the best budget grinder on the market in Canada.
🤝👍👍👍
Nice work, Bro!
Heard using a 60° V swage forge welding cable helps alot. But, I'm a rookie and can't even forge weld yet, so... don't rely on me to have good advice 😳
So how has this 2x72 been treating you I mite buy one but my only deal breaker is I'd like a tilting grinder for my shop
New video update about this grinder coming out later today or tomorrow and will hopefully answer any questions you have, also addressing the tilt. If there is anything you'd want to know that does not get answered, just comment or send me a message and I will get back to you!
@@athomeforge2140 thank you I really appreciate that finally going g to get my first 2x72 in the new year trying g to figure out if I want this one or am I paying extra and getting the vashti grinder
Beautiful!
Awesome! At what pressure do you run it?
I usually start it around 10psi then as it is heating up and gets to temperature it stays around 1-2psi
@@athomeforge2140 thank you! And, while we're on the subject, how long does it take to heat up? I'm just going to make one myself, so trying to get a proper firsthand information.
@@mythdweller Because my Forge that I made it fairly large, 14" lonf by approx 7" diameter, with a flat base, probably 15-20 minutes up to a forge weld heat. it is useable within 12 or so for general forging.
@@athomeforge2140 wow, cool! Thank you so much, appreciate it.
dooope, great video
Could've made a bridge for the chasms :D
Nice 👌
How large is the propane orifice going into air pipe?
It is approx 13/64” as it used to be a tapped hole for a mig tip from my venturi burner. However, because of the needle valve before it enters the chamber, I do not think the hole size matters. I’ve seen people put a 3/8” pipe straight into the chamber, as long as it’s regulated with a needle valve

Great job finishing this off! When you told me about smithing a few years ago (was it 3 or 4 now?), I never knew you'd get to doing some really really cool/intricate stuff like this! I'm proud of you! Keep up the good work!
