Modular Reed Beds- a step change in reed bed solutions
Reed beds are a natural way to treat wastewater and are often used to polish solids in the final effluent on sewage treatment works. Reed beds are normally designed to take a specific solids loading per m2 to allow adequate time for the solids to degrade on the beds surface. With the Modular Reed Bed there is no need to size for solids degradation in this way because solids are captured at the front end and pumped away. The process can use any type of media, aeration and can assist with storm flows and final polishing or blending of effluent. At 50% smaller footprint than a traditional system there is no need to buy additional land, most small works have a hard standing or small area wher...

A closer look at a unique Modular Reed Bed system that allows different media to be used in the same bed, empty or void zones for aeration or sludge capture and is up to 50% smaller in size than a traditional system. Due to tightening phosphate consents many sewage works are now dosing much more ferric and as a result have to install some type of tertiary solids capture system. The Modular Reed...

A video showing the start of GWTs media trial at Scottish Water Horizons in Bo'ness. The trial will look at the differences between a robust, recycled plastic media and blast furnace slag- looking for improvements in BOD removal given the large surface area of Plastislag which is the media on trial.

Capital maintenance is the new way to approach wastewater treatment projects. The need to preserve and optimise existing assets has never been greater, GWT looks at the innovations helping people to optimise trickling filters and cut carbon in the water treatment industry
NEW Modular reed bed technology

A revolutionary process which enables a water treatment works to use a green solution in a small space. A unique innovation in reed bed treatment which allows for different medias to be used in the same bed, aeration lanes and sludge capture chambers. Different contaminants can be removed but the process works in the same way as a traditional system which helps to polish solids and reduce BOD.

Hi, I am currently Exploring waste water Technology. I know the potential of Giant Reed. But I am facing issue of Very slow growth rate of Giant Reed using Ground water even though we have supplied ample amount of Fertilizer , but not growing

I wonder if bamboo would work? It is very fast growing. Maybe too fast though?

I do not get it. Extraction of media, follwed by disposal. Use of the vegetation should be viewed as a useful byproduct. The context for reed bed is usually remote and/or impoverished communities where no other sewage treatment is available. There will not be any expensive removal.

Thanks for your comment Scott, you are correct in that when reed beds and wetlands are used in a traditional way they will be managed very differently. This design (which is now further adjusted and made of fabricated stainless steel) is for the end of existing sewage works in the UK where we use it to polish cleaned water in a small space where there would not be room for a traditional system. It's not a replacement for traditional reed bed systems, especially in impoverished communities, it's an alternative to a mechanical process such as a meccana filter or similar.
