I remember that talentless, fat, weirdo, Ken Russell, slagging the Carry Ons off something terrible and actually announcing that all who enjoyed them were middle class snobs who liked to laugh at the proletariat! Utter bollocks. He was obviously just gutted that none of his rubbish ever earnt a fifth of what the Carry Ons did. I have to say though, Barbara Windsor was NEVER thought of as a wonderful actress at all. 'Sparrows Cant Sing' is highly forgettable yet some place it alongside 'Cathy Come Home'!! Watch Babs in 'Carry On Dick' - arguably her most cringe inducing performance - she is so pantominic and fake its painful to behold. It is no wonder after the Carry Ons she mainly survived by doing panto, kids programmes (Worzel Gunmidge a good case in point. Jon Pertwee, Geoffrey Bayldon, Una Stubbs et al all played it straight and delivered wonderful performances....Barbara was barabra yet again, only on castors) and chat shows. Look at Joan Sims' career compared to Windsors.... theres the talented dramatic actress.

Actually, the greatest British film is thought to be "Don't Look Now." Get Carter is an exercise in Masculine Toxicity at its pinnacle. Fuck that. That's some tiresome shit.

The first two notes of the theme are recognizable as that of a UK overland train horn tone; clearly the inspiration. Still used to this day on the railways. I hear it quite often, living near the tracks. In my mind, the classic tune automatically follows on.

Good round up of a great British film, possibly the finest of its genre. I first saw Get Carter at the cinema on its release in 1971 at the age of seventeen and even then realising I had watched a classic, can clearly remember the deafening silence of the audience as the credits rolled, an almost ghostly hush. As I’ve caught up with this fine movie through the years, it continues to reveal. The hit man at the end with the J gold ring was actually in the same train carriage as Carter at the beginning of the movie. Thus perhaps Carters demise was already planned by his London bosses knowing what he was truely capable of, a fact that the Northern crime syndicate had absolutely no idea what kind of hell was about to unleash on them as Carter took his revenge and his set of skills away from the darkness and into the light. Hopefully the likes of Netflix can get Get Carter and spread the word and find an ever bigger audience.

Still love this film, in all its grittiness and Carter's moral and mental dissolution. It's hard to imagine Carter surviving long, even if he wasn't killed in the film (or as Glenda says it, "Fillum"). His boss would've had him hunted and brought in... sort of like the end of "The Hit," another of my favorite British gangster fillums.

the films were much loved here in Canada where the accents and Britishisms added a dash of spice. They could not have been made in any other country in any other era. I get sick of the politically "correct" telling us what we can see or hear. As Sidney would have said, up theirs's.

The end of the novel is somewhat ambiguous, it's not clear if Carter survives or not. He''s not the relentless one man killing machine either, he's portrayed in the novel as a lot less competent and more vulnerable. For example in the novel Brumby realises what Carter is about to do and gets away.

You only have to play "Dead end street" to realize how the Kinks are relevant through to today. That's Quality, that's Talent. I can imagine every time Paul McCartney and writers of his ilk hear Waterloo Sunset wishes they'd wrote that. The Kinks - more gritty, accurate than most of their time and beyond.

Brilliant series then - Callan, Public Eye, Harry Palmer, Danger Man et al. Not the low grade over blown hero stuff you get now. A similar character in the USA filmed later in the mid 70s was Harry O (David Janssen. I wonder if the makers of that programme had watched Alfred Burke as Frank Marker ?
