A Final Fantasy XIV Fisher creating guides on how to fish all the fish of The Source and The First, in quick, goldfish sized videos. Making FFXIV fishing easier to do and understand.
Introducing The Fishing Derby: Baited! (Nov. 2 - Nov. 9)
The Fishcord Presents... The Fishing Derby: Baited.
The newest derby event, The Fishing Derby: Baited, is a week long event where everyone is limited to only 15 baits, and - as a community - have to catch 651 unique fish to complete the Derby Fishing Log.
These fish will have participants angling their rods in fishing holes from A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, Stormblood, Shadowbringers, Endwalker, and Ocean Fishing.
Individual's performances will be scored based on the big fish that are caught. Work with fellow fishing community members to gather bait, determine new strategies, and - most importantly - catch the fish.
For complete information on this event, please see the Fishcord derby channel...

78 mooches from ancient shrimp. Did not even see a !!!
Always double check that you have the folklore book!
This founds so fun!
Best of luck to everyone! This sounds like a really neat challenge, well done!
Is it recommended to use modest lure?
No. Every fish in the Rusted Reservoir, Moonlight Guppy included, are Precision Hookset fish.
i was there for this! what a fun panel! :D
Ahhh the sweet music of Desyth
Was using Syrphid Baskets through multiple windows without a bite, then saw this video. Tried switching to Purse Web Spider then immediately got 2 consecutive bites which eventually landed me the catch! Thank you! So everyone, use the Spider.
Catched it today with this method, i think it took me 2-3 windows overall using this. Thank you for this guide!
Took me about 6-7 Windows with 3 baits in my pocket already to even see the !!! bite. Got it on the very first hook :)
Does the necessity for Surface Slap mean Zaleras can't be caught in Free Trial (maxed at level 70)?
I forgot to add in the Free Trial players note! No, you do not need Surface Slap! You will just be using Chum and Rest like the Lv.71-99 method!
@@FruitySnacks Is level 50 the minimum lvl of fishing to be able to catch this fish?
@@TheMonarch403 Realistically, yes. Technically, no, but it's not worth the time at the lower levels.
@@FruitySnacksthank you I got it after 3 casts as a level 50 fisher with 302 gathering I just waited till 9:01am cast chum and rest and only had to repeat that twice
I fish so infrequently, I didn't realise the "Rest" action existed. Using it really cuts down on the fishing cycle when you're time limited. Got it on a L62 Fisher in L50 Gear in about 5 casts. Thank you!
it was just added in in DT, so so so useful!
@FruitySnacks I also updated my blog guide to this Moogle Event, embedding your video, so I hope it helps others too.
@@snowman4506 Ah, thanks. I don't feel /quite/ so blind. There've been a lot of changes to actions/abilities recently and fishing isn't high on my to-do list very often! I was also confused because there is a L50*** one and this guide talks about higher levels, but I got the Minimog on my L50 ish character. But I got it - and easily, thanks to this vid :)
Caught it within 5 minutes. Subscribed!😆❤
spend about 1.5/ 2 hours trying to catch this fish for moogle tomes did both the fish eyes and the lvl 100 modest lure strat though couldnt always chum got about 4x triple exclamation mark but always "fish got away" message am i doing something wrong am lvl 100 fisher with latest crafted set
@@uqholder1590 if you are getting the !!! Bites, then no. Just unlucky. Gear only matters with if you have enough gathering to actually catch the fish. Big fish have fixed slip rates, and while Zaleras is low, you just got unlucky and had it slipped. Unless you are using Patience II, which will not help you at all.
@@FruitySnacks I tried to catch it too except i'm only lvl 51. I finally got a !!! (didn't know the time window, it's not displayed on ff14angler), but it failed to catch it. And just now looking a bit more about it, i saw on the wiki i'm way below the requirement of 314+ Gathering :x. Why Patience isn't good btw, Zalera can't be big or something?
@@Harest Patience doesn't impact the chance of Big Fish (which Zalera is classified as) biting, some people still use it even though they don't need to. Also! The Gathering needed is 290+ -- the game should tell you that your gathering is too low whenever you attempt to catch it.
@@FruitySnacks Sorry, i play in french maybe "Big" wasn't the right term there, according to the wiki you call it "large-sized". But i see what you mean, it doesn't help, but it doesn't diminish your chance either, it's just wasted GP. I was a bit tired already during my session, so i checked where the game logs were, and tried to find what you said, and you're right! I just saw a line: "Vous n'avez pas assez de collecte pour pêcher cette prise" (en: you don't have enough Gathering to fish that catch.). Thanks for the answer. Fairly new to the game so i've a lot to learn still, fishing is my highest job atm, and well, not enough apparently ahah. That Mog event isn't the most beginner friendly one, but everything is obtainable elsewhere for what i saw, so that's fine. Else i guess i'd just be squatting the Gold Saucer. Edit: I forgot i wanted to ask, but do you have a site which compile in a practical way all the useful info for fishing? It's unfortunate that ff14angler doesn't have the requisites here (Gathering stat + time window). I liked the fact you could switch language, and most importantly, the baits info with the fishing rate of a certain fish. Zalera being indicated at 5.23%.
@@Harest Teamcraft Guides has some stuff, and I have a multi-volumn "book" here: afishersguidetoeorzea.carrd.co/ ... but they are all in English. I don't know of any translated resources. I'm planning to do some more fundamental - type guide videos around the turn of the year, but don't have much more beyond that atm. The Fishcord might be able to help more by being a place you can ask questions.
If you didn't get the Final Fish before 7.0, you didn't earn the title.
@@zazikikomo7796 no, no, no. We don't think that here. Anyone who gets Final Fish at any point always earned it. Every title is well earned, regardless of when you get it.
wow... out of 10 casts in the window it was 10 times the !!!. And it got away 10 times -.-
@@zackfair6203 that tracks! With surface slap, Uncond becomes the only bite. It is also slippery as heck.

Acidentally deleted my original comment while trying to delete the notification, and apparently also deleted @phazetube's response too. :( I was just saying that you should add in the description that an effective way to catch Argonauta Argo is to Slap the fish Triaina and use Ambitious Lure.

thanks for the guide as always, fruity! i love when fish show up in mogtomes bc then i get to bully my friends into fishing 😈
Good, good. Excellent.
Thought this was an older video, but glad to see you're doing updated guides for all the fun tools we get with DT's new fishing skills! You've been a MASSIVE help and an inspiration in my journey to get <Final Fish>, and 19 more fish we'll finally be done. Cheers man, looking forward to more content!
Nope! This is a net-new guide. I've typically not done the straight-catch ARR fish (at least pre DT) like this because they really aren't too hard to suss out. This guy only got a guide because they appeared in the mogtomes this week!
Yessss just caught this with very literally one second left in the window! Thanks as always for the guides :)
Appreciate you and your guides Fruity! Got ARR legends easy but have had 30+ windows of Caribenet and the Butterfly slippin off the hook. Just Ruby, Warden and Steth left in StB so we'll see how that goes 😂
since starting my journey to complete the fishing log a month or two ago, this remains the only ARR fish I have left to catch. gone through so so many windows without even a bite, i hate this fish so much lol
instruction unclear, caught on a Marketboard lol
@@ducktruck40 no judgement!

my luck with fishing is horrible, i never once saw !!! every time i try within the weather it spawns and within intuition...
Question with DT update. When fishing for lancet, would using the big lure be viable? I might be misunderstanding, but wouldn't it essentially eliminate every fish, but the other large tug fish you don't have SSd and Lancet? Bringing it from a pool of 5 down to 2?
it was embarrassing when I went to the Field Museum and we were going thru the precambrian era and I was all “oh hey I caught that in 14” at 90% of the creatures ☠️
Friend and I walked into an aquarium near us one day and I saw a Tasselled Wobbagong and he was like "Is that one of your Fourteen Fish?" (he also plays, but does not fish) I was like, no, it's real. The look on his face when the plaque showed TASSELLED WOBBAGONG...
First thought with those Deathworm ones are that that’s literally a Graboid tentacle from Tremors, like that’s almost 1:1 from those films, and “Shriekers” are the second life stage of a Graboid in the fantasy of Tremors Edit: the mouth is more of a Graboid shape, but my point stands
@@thew00dsman79 someone was pointing that out in chat and I missed it during that segment. Ive not seen tremors, so missed that reference!
@@FruitySnacks fantastic film, sequels are hit or miss, but the first one is a great monster movie for its time Edit: but if you actually look up the monster designs I find it’s pretty clear that that might’ve been the basis of the fish
That was a delight! I appreciate you redoing this as a livestream for those of us who weren't able to make it during the con. The aside about the guy trying to summon the Mongolian Deathworm like Dune had me losing my mind. 🤣 Also, putting a warning for the snake but not Hullbreaker Isle... That one wrecked my party multiple times lol. I'm only at HSW fishing, because I focused hard on MSQ once I decided I wanted to go to GATEway FATE, but this makes me even more excited to pick up my fishing journey once I get the last little bit through DT. Thank you!
I'm so disappointed Magic Bucket isn't based on a real life fish...
great video but i can't even catch a goddamn phallaina
Are there any fishing techniques IRL that aren't a skill in FFXIV fishing yet that could be implemented, either just by name or with a mechanic of some sort
There's a few that I know of -- are you asking for with 'just a fishing rod' or just in general (like, any apparatus)? If with just a rod, there's 'nymphing' with fly fishing, where you actually tie TWO flows to your line - one is a dry fly (it floats), the other is a much smaller 'nymph' that is tied to hook of the dry fly and usually sinks behind the dry fly by about 18 inches or so. Another is specifically around squidding, where you use a very specific type of hook (that looks terrifying, mind you) and has a bright light on it that attracts the squid. It's only really useful at night, and really only works on squids. Also fun fact - the idea of using a light-based 'lure' is something that is being considered to draw out collossal and giant squids for filming. Effectively the idea is to use a robotic jellyfish that lights up a certain pattern to simulate that it's in distress and draw out the squids. For non rod-based fishing, there's stuff like cast nets that can be used to get live bait. You also get into the 'passive' fishing stuff like Lobster Pots and Trawling, but that's not really something that would work in FFXIV as we currently know it. That's what I know off the top of my head! There is probably more (and probably a bunch that are very region specific) that I'm missing... and as I'm typing this I could see there being more done with Spearfishing, maybe?
@@FruitySnacks Pots and trawling seem like they would at least work well with any kind of "island sanctuary" type content at least.
Finally working on my fishing records and couldn't figure out why I could find this one....snagging gah!
I think this has convinced me more than anything to actually go for big fishing, the amount of detail that lies in all the parallels to real world fish/history/mythology is amazing. So far I've only fished to get crafting mats and as an alternative to mining for scrips, but honestly i think i wanna get them all just to read the fish guide descriptions and figure out the real world parallels (or alternatively go for the XIV equivalent of a real world fish).
Thank you so much for sharing this with those of us who didnh't get to attend GATEway FATE! Kinda obvious but I deeply love the real world foundations that FSH is so firmly attached to, so hearing you talk about it for an hour is, uh, ideal.
I was just googling if lures work on legendary fish so thank you for this.
p.s. How long has "Rest" been in the game? I'm 2 fish short of the Final Fish title and I learned about that ability from this video, lol.
@@C-Lammas Rest was added in Patch 7.0 - so since June 28th, 2024.
@@FruitySnacks Ah, well that's good. I was afraid I've somehow missed it for several expansions. Not the first time I'm missing on an ability that's added retroactively to a lower level.
thanks for the guide! Makeshift bait is really clutch for the mooch train Btw, could you also do a guide on Ambling Caltrop? I swear the fishing hole is cursed because I spend 80% of the window just trying to hook the damn geckos needed for the mooch :(
Ambling is one of those fish that I tell myself I'll do a guide on then just never do for some reason or another. Literally there's always something juuust more important to do. I should hopefully try and fix that soon.
@@FruitySnacks Finally caught this sneaky rat after 10+ windows of suffering! Unfortunately there's no optimal bait, which makes priming mooches a nightmare. I tried dessert frogs, jerked ovim, versatile lures and metal spinners, but dustfish, crabs and geckos are hungry for everything :| I also tried keeping a mental log of the bite times (your cast timer macro was really useful), but there's serious overlap between everything that makes surface slapping risky when you are already crunched for GP and time. With chum, dustfish bite from 5s to 12s, crabs from 10s to 16s and geckos from 7s to 16s+ (extra 2-3s to each without chum). I gave up on slapping and just chum caught everything from 7s onwards praying it was a gecko lol My only real tip is to arrive early, get 10 stacks of anglers and have a big gecko primed for the window. Chum catch everything from 7s onwards while keeping GP up with hi-cordials. Then use mooch 2 first if you get a small gecko, followed by makeshift bait for when mooch 2 is on CD. Only use patience 2 when out of everything else Another "tip" is to turn on collector's glove. 99% of !!! bites will be thorned lizards, so you might as well turn those into scrips for more hi-cordials. Side note: i also didn't do the Crystarium gathering & collectables quests yet, and i haven't seen a single amber monkfish at all. Are monkfish only enabled at the fishing hole afterwards?
I'm trying this technique right now and I got three bites and slips of Xenocanthus, instead of my usual 2 bites and slips of a Hardhead Trout, so it's definitely an improvement in the miserable odds!
Caught it earlier today, thanks!!
... so THIS is why I get Fishers Intuition while hunting for Rimepike
ok i watched the basic fisher guide ... and now i am confused :D
Salutations to everyone who just failed
Sorry if I am asking a noob question but is there anywhere I can find specific bite times / windows for all of the fish? I feel like this resource has to exist as it would simplify a lot when it comes to BF’ing. I use teamcraft a lot but it only seems to mention these things if a person has commented on the fish. Or there is a field I am completely missing / overlooking?
In Teamcraft when searching for the specific fishing hole, there should be a bite times section at the bottom, which you can filter per bait to find what you need. However it doesn't filter for time/weather requirement, so you kinda have to know which fish are available during the time you'll be there. Also some data isn't correct, so it will show you fish available for bait where it isn't, particularly for very low percentage. Like White, Firelight and Indigo Prismfish being available as straight catch in Prism Lake when they aren't.
When rerolling is it possible for The Sound of Fury to bite instead of Salad causing a rare but painful timeloss?
i tried the modest lure method after fruity discussed it in another video and pulled the sound of fury on my first cast and (if memory serves) second lure. i'm sure it's still worth doing, but yes that's something that can happen and yes it's incredibly painful.
It’s really impressive seeing how this is effectively “casting multiple times in the same cast”. Fisher is now able to weave into and around itself.
@@Adrienne_Quelle this was the first time I have ever made a fisher "rotation" timer and that was wild.
I caught Ealad Skaan 2 days ago!
@@ciary congratulations!
When I saw the thumbnail I found it odd that you would make one of these for Ealad Skaan. Wasn't it just a very straightforward slap-and-cast fish? But of course, the new lures! The interesting elements of Ealad Skaan were always the unique conditions, if anything, not the actual process of catching it. It's impressive how Dawntrail has managed to rethink the way we approach older fish now between the lures and the swimbait. I spent a good amount time racking my brain about how some of the old fish would be affected and I never came up with this one. And now... sigh. Wasn't expecting to make lure macros but here I am. Great choice for a video!
@@Gear_Master_ I should have macros in the description!
