    hi sir, I have a question: yesterday I did the literature paper and the question was how is Dr Jekyll presented as a mysterious character and I used the quotation of foggy cupola, dreadful shipwreck and my devil had been long caged and it came out roaring and I made sure that after all my analysis and I linked it back to the question. Are the quotes that I used fine?

    • @ari-pu2le
      @ari-pu2le 2 года назад

      like for foggy cupola the adjective foggy symbolises utterson and Jekyll friend so therefore which reflect utterson inability to see reality because he so convinced that Jekyll is a good friend that he cannot solve the mystery of his character. (And then I talked about cupola how it lets light in and etc) Please respond am kind of concerned and scared to ask my teacher

    How does Priestley use Gerald to explore ideas about responsibility? Gerald croft is Priestley’s tool to reveal the flaws of the upper class. He represents the aristocracy whom in 1912 exploited the working class. Priestley uses Gerald to reinforce his socialist message and the damaging aristocratic capitalist message of the Edwardian era. Priestley describes Gerald Croft in the introductory stage directions as an ‘easy well-bred young man-about-town’ - highlighting a stereotypical upper class man. Priestley’s use of the rule of three - with the adjectives easy, well-bred and young - to tells us that he is part of an elite, fortunate class and is used to a life with money all around him which many people don’t have. However, the adjective ‘young’ could show that he is reckless and priorities his needs before others. This encapsulates the idea of greed as in the play we see Gerald in the palace bar - embroiled in events that is explained later on in the play and also foreshadows the foolish, unforgiving behavior towards Daisy Renton and Sheila. The phrase ‘mad-about-town’ shows that he knows what’s happening in the world yet still exploits the working class- going against the view of Priestley. The 1945 audience would be disgusted by Gerald’s behavior as he exploits mostly women to work for him- giving them very low wages and making a lot of money (portraying the greed of the upper class). We can see Priestley’s message in the quote, “We are responsible for each other” depicting the fact that there shouldn’t be a division between the upper class (Gerald) and the lower class (Eva) as it shows inequality. Priestley uses Gerald to show that even with his foolish, reckless behavior he can change - breaking the capitalist view and bringing hope to a more socialist society. The Inspector aims to change the upper class views on responsibility, and does so by describing to each of the characters how they all contributed to the suicide of Eva Smith. However, at first Gerald denies this claim and tells the inspector in an assertive tone, “I don’t come into this suicide business” illustrating his poor, dismissive attitude. The phrase ‘suicide business’ is unkind and insensitive which highlights the disgusting behavior of Gerald but it also shows his superiority. “Business” is not used in the sense of money, like Crofts ltd, but is used as something difficult or a scandalous event. Priestley positions Gerald as superior as he implies others are responsible for Eva’s death. However, the cold hearted Gerald soon changes as he discovers that Eva Smith is actually Daisy Renton. Priestley positions the audience, which has seen Gerald’s dismissive attitude, to enjoy his discomfort during his interrogation. Yet Gerald seemed remorseful of his actions and says: “She didn’t blame me at all. I wish to God she had now.” The melancholy tone shows his genuine guilt and sadness. The audience would feel sympathy towards Gerald, and for a while, the audience believes he will align himself with the inspector’s views of social responsibility. This reinforces Priestley’s socialist views as Gerald is now taking the blame - coming back to Priestley’s idea that “we are members of one body.”
