What is a Japanese Tea Garden, or Roji?
What is a roji, or Japanese tea garden? How is a tea garden used? What are tea ceremony guests doing in the garden during a tea gathering? Tea gardens are an important part of the Japanese garden tradition, influencing not just garden building over the centuries but Japanese aesthetics in general.
Japanese garden master Hiroaki Etou, who himself is a student of Chado (way of tea), discusses the basic flow of host and guests during a tea gathering, or chaji. Mr. Etou also touches on his thinking behind tea garden design and layout, as well as his approach to pruning and maintenance in the roji. After briefly describing how he became interested in building tea gardens, Mr. Etou explains the ...

how did he attach to the round poles?
The bamboo horizontal pieces were attached to the wooden posts with weather-resistant screws, pre-drilling the bamboo first so as not to split it.
beautiful, thanks!
Outstanding presentation. Thank you so very much.
Thanks to this video, I now have a better appreciation for the artistry that goes into this style of fence. Thank you for sharing it 👍🏻
Good simple explanation ...
のずらずみ ?
Thank you. This video has taught me so much about Japanese design.
I believe they backfilled behind the wall with dirt. And there was no mortar used, just dry stacked stones carefully nestled together.
Fantastic video
Beautiful wall
Very nice wall great work brother
Very nice beautiful work
Love it !
Great video, informative and very interesting. Well done
thank you
Wow, this is amazing. May I ask what state this wall is in?
North Texas.
Specifically the Dallas/Forth Worth area. Thank you for watching!
A sweet old man and a beautifully crafted wall. Only wish I had seen a bit more of the actual wall being built. Foundation, mortar mix, etc.
You can see the foundation at 1:06, it appears to me to be just a bed of sand that he nestles the stones into. And there is no mortar used, traditional Japanese stone walls are dry, they use friction and gravity to hold the stones together. This man’s philosophy of building walls is really more what this video is about in my opinion. But his technique can be observed and learned from, and he does explain it. This is a true gem of a video. Just give it a few more watches to extract the knowledge. 🤝
Well done!
Thank you so much for presenting this master work. Very inspiring.
If one pays attention to the details of Mr. Eto's work, it is possible to create such gardens for your own backyard. According to the Sakuteiki, we are instructed to "let the exceptional work of past master gardeners be your guide... yet heed as well one's own taste." We, in the English world, are blessed with this 1,000 year old writing to be translated into English. The Sakuteiki (Records of Garden Making) is the oldest book on gardening in the world. No wonder Japanese gardens are so elegant. They've had many creators imbued with their spirit of serenity. Thank you for sharing.
