Amateur astronomer living in the Netherlands. I like to design and build telescopes, mostly Dobsonians, and make visual observations with them. From my backyard to the pristine skies of La Palma, visual observing of the deep sky is what makes my world go round.
From time to time I'll upload some clips about newly finished building projects, some timelapses or other astronomy related stuff. Enjoy, hope you like it!

Total Solar Eclipse from Eagletown, Oklahoma
First quick video edit of the incredible solar eclipse near Eagletown, Oklahoma. I made this short video with a Nikon D3200 attached to a 1000mm f/10 MTO "Russentonne". My goal was to catch the elusive "Baily's Beads" with relatively cheap/simple equipment. It worked!
Orion Starblast complete telescope makeover

I took the optical components of one of my friend's Orion Starblast to transform it into a backpack transportable travel scope. Parts reused are both mirrors, the primary mirror cell and the spidevane assembly.
The Big One - a Portable 25" Telescope
With little doubt the largest telescope I'll ever own: a huge 25" (635mm) aperture truss Dobsonian! I built this monster early 2022, using a high quality mirror set salvaged from an abandoned telescope found in Germany (read the complete story of this incredible barnfind here: www.roelblog.nl/2021/10/bizarre-schuurvondst-de-grootste-telescoop-van-nederland/). This video shows the complete assem...
Tiny Telescope - a pocket sized Dobsonian
Could it be the smallest 4" telescope in the world? I build this little Dobsonian as a scale model of my 16" f/4 Propdob. Initially just for fun and for display purpose only, but it appeared to work just fine! I brought it as an extra telescope on one of my observing trips to La Palma, and I made quite a few observation and sketches through it. Visit www.roelblog.nl (in Dutch) to find more info.
400mm f/4 Airline Transportable Dobsonian Telescope Assembly

Lusk Wyoming Total Solar Eclipse
On August 21, 2017 our group was invited on A&L Ranch near Lusk, WY to watch the solar eclips from the top of a hill. The view was absolutely amazing (even without the eclipse), but when totality hit us right in the face, it became one of the most memorable locations and experiences of our lives. Being able to observe the eclipse on such a remote location, far away from the crowds, was amazing....

Mirador Astronómico - Time-lapse of the La Palma Night Sky
In August 2015 I travelled to the wonderful Canary island of La Palma to observe the night sky with my home-built telescope. Meanwhile, I made a series of time-lapse sequences in which I tried to capture the splendor of the incredible La Palma night sky. I am mostly a visual observer and not particularly a astophotographer, and besides some test sequences shot at home, this is my first attempt ...
what are those rods and their locking mechanism called?? so that i can search
dose it work?
This telescope is amazing. Is there any way that I can purchase this telescope or a telescope similar to it? I think that you don't sell it, so are there other 10" telescopes this compact and portable on sale anywhere?
😳👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍super.
Wao!
Just excellent!
Please take my money 😢
Superb design..😮 Wish I could have or able to make one of that 😢
Ill be very happy with 400mm one but if i had this ill never ask for anything else in my life.
Where can I buy one of these? Please tell me! :(
This is one of the best videos on RUclips
If that light, I'd go 12".
Great telescope project! Greetings from NGC-51 Amateur Astronony group from Rio de Janeiro-Brasil
Potverdikkeme opwindend!
I need the plans for this please.
Stunning!
How awesome!! What filters are you using?
Thanks! I'm using various filters to ensure safe viewing. From front to back: 75mm f/16 Polarex/Unitron objective --> 2" Baader 35nm h-alpha ERF filter --> Coronado etalon (salvaged from a PST) --> Beloptik ITF --> Coronado BF10 extreme narrow band block filter --> 7-21mm zoom eyepiece
@@Roelarex can you make a tour of this telescope?
@@gazorbpazorbian Yes, I can do that. The telescope is still in its early test stages, but when it's finished I'll post a new video with some more info.
Wau!!!!!👍
How do you use this telescope in the Netherlands, which has the worst light pollution in Europe? There are some dark places left in France.
same music in alien -whats the name?
I learned so much more than I was expecting watching this. That telescope is amazing, super impressive work!
Beutiful design 🤓👍👍👍
Hello my friend Congratulations, I really liked this project, it's incredible, could you transfer the project to a 114mm F900 telescope, I'm very grateful
...who is interested for a CROWDFUNDING ?...I would gladly cooperate for one of those...very compact...and a fun to assembly!
Nice
Cute little travel scope. 102mm would allow you to track down all the Messier objects if you know where they’re at.
Mocowanie lusterka wtórnego straszne 😱a tak to fajny sprzęt ,extremalnie kompaktowy
Wat een avontuur Roel 😊
Thank you for sharing your videos. I've been copying your design to make an 8 inch travel dob. After I cut the circle in the mirror holder, can I place the mirror in directly? Does it rest on top of the three collimation bolts on the inside? Do you use any clamps? I am worried about the safety of the mirror. I see you have the exterior cover, but does anything protect it or harness it on the inside? is it just glass next to wood? Thanks.
Excellent!
Supermooi
I see you aren't biased- you own a dob and a cat. Lovely project.
I would love to buy 200 or 250mm version of this to take on trips, very nice piece of kit.
Love it. Thank you for taking the time to share.
would love to see the mirror cell
Beautiful design
Incredible! Which focuser did you use?
I made the focuser myself out of an old camera zoom lens: www.cloudynights.com/topic/174947-helical-focuser-from-a-camera-objective/
I click nerdy videos that have cats in their thumbnails.
Nice telescope, but the music is terrible
Do you ever sell these?
After my research u could of gotten a hole lot more focal length for the same size mirror
Thats bad azz i would love that
Can u build me one? I'm a truck driver I don't have room for a telescope
You should build these and sell them I would love one just a little bigger there are none on the market I'm a truck driver and I don't have room for a telescope but I love astronomy.
How do the bearings stay so evenly on the track? I see on your other telescopes there is a little piece on the outside of the bearing that prevents it from leaving the track. I don't see that on this however. I'm building a telescope based on studying your videos and I'm curious about this point. Thanks!
When everything is cut and mounted square and precise, the sideway movement is should not be a problem. However, I'm using a equatorial platform now, and that means the scope's base is not always parallel to the ground anymore, so I installed some Telfon sliders on the side to prevent the sideward movement of the mirror box.
Beautifulo,. Wherer can I buy the kit or where can I get plans to make one?
