this copper foil have insulation? so that it doesn't short circuit with the contacts underneath it? im confusing because you clean the white coat from Cooper foil.
Dude, just speak
Thanks for this video! Cleaning the headphone jack vigorously with a headphone plugged in and not plugged in using IPA and a toothbrush fixes my problem. I also jammed a QTIP covered in IPA in and out of the 3.5mm jack as well.
What’s that green paste
I have a game boy color that shows similar but different symptoms. When powered by batteries, it works just fine. When powered by DC jack, it beeps like yours. Do you think that the power regulator could be causing this too? Thanks for answering
I see!! I didn't jump the pattern would have died!! Mr X!!
Very informative! Thanks!!!
Your welcome!
which Dremel are you using
A simple cheap one from amazon. Nothing fancy. Its actually for wood with various tips.
Very creative testing and nice work fixing! Pika!
Thank you very much! :)
Awe, I miss pixel block of oak lol (Awesome job bud!!!!)
Thanks! :)
Nice job! :) Echt ein sehr mysteriöser Fehler :D
Haben viele Kassetten, aber normalerweise ist ein looser Pin am Hauptchip dafür verantwortlich. Auf DAS DA, wäre ich nie im Leben gekommen.
@x-fix Hi, can i have a link to buy the potentiometers for ps2 controller?
You should find on Aliexpress potentionmeters or analogsticks for PS2, PS3 and Xbox360 without any trouble. They have all the same ones.
10:20 I hope you don't cook your rice in there :--)
No, but my soup :)
Just please add comntery
Tk man
It's good to see people preserving the past. Good job!
Thanks for the nice comment aswell! :)
LCD polarisation is a complex topic. It's possible that you're just buying polarizing film with the wrong angle. The GBA is a TFT display and usually those have the front polarizer at 45 degrees and the rear polarizer at 135 degrees. It's possible if you're buying a generic polarizer for a gameboy then those might be 90 degrees or 0 degrees and that could be causing the trouble you're seeing where the glue appears to be on the wrong side. (because flipping the polarizer also flips the angle of polarization, so 45 degrees flips to 135 degrees, 90 flips to 0 etc) It could just be that you need to try a polarizing film angle test tool kit first to determine the correct polarizing film to get, so the glue is in the correct orientation
Its a shame that I would have to test any film first even tho its labeled as for the GBA. The seller also was surpriced we ran into a problem like this. Other repair colleges have the same problem. Something went wrong in the manifacture process and a massive amount of these was produced. Thank you for the important information! I will search for such a tester!
Hey Bro, I really want to thank you for this video.I just bought a gameboy dmg (yesterday) for $50. Perfect conditions, the only problem was the it wasn't reading the games right. I opened up the games and cleaned them but still wasn't reading them. so before opening the gameboy I tried looking for videos but nothing. until I got to yours and the exact thing was happening. I was finally able to fix it thanks to you. Much obliged!
Fantastic! Your very welcome! Nice to read that my video helped out! :)
Hello , whats that coper leafs are called in the market ?
Its probably called copper tape. You just need to cut it carefully! :)
7:22 very important capture that show how the earphones jack works to make the speaker sound
It was a very important discovery on my end aswell so I wanted to point that out to anyone else! :)
nice work bud
Thanks a lot! :)
I followed the video carefully (even though electronics give me a headache!) But for my color I'll gladly do it (I have the same problem with the A button, but surprisingly, the 4 copper contacts give me continuity with the multimeter. I have no idea where else to look to understand what is preventing its function. Suggestions? Also because I'm not good at understanding diagrams, although I've already had to use some to repair components of my other "oldies" (an old Volvo!) Thanks from Italy and nice job really! P.s.: it's incredible how much junk from 30-year-old snacks comes out.... they really needed a good cleaning. it's a leap back in time in every sense!
pps: What did you use to clean the contact ... I always use the spray contact version but I see you using something liquid aafther you welded
On the Retro Six Wikia you should be able to find simple board scans of the Gameboy color. Just follow the traces on the board. You will see that they lead to the other side of the board and back to the front side all the way to the CPU. If 1 button is not working there is for 99% somewhere an interruption! You "just" need to find it!
Thats Isopropanol Alcohol (99% alcohol) anything from 90% is good for cleaning electronics. I like to use it during welding because it wont spray the soldermask into the air and I wont have to breath it in. :)
@@x-fix Hmmm it will be hard for me. I can try but since I am not good I do not understand one thing: in theory if there is "Interruption", as in your video ... at the contact point of the keys the tester should not "beep" but mine instead does in all 4 points that are clearly visible at 17.10 ... this is what confuses me. @_@ thanks if you can clarify this mysterious behavior :o
@@lucaecinziawolf4483 Are there at some point in any other areas some signs of corrosion?
Love seeing trace repairs, this was a smooth fix, congrats!
Glad you liked it! :)
How does that happen?
I have no idea? Maybe someone was throwing the whole thing. Its common that pins are getting loose after all those years but the whole chip...
have the same problem, 2nd replacement and nothing i just cleaned it for about 15 minutes and still doesn’t work 😢
06:14 Did you also make sure that there is a connection between those 2 elements in the phone jack? It can be a tiny little piece of dirt or corrosion and it wont work so make sure that there is a solid connection between those two! :)
Great job my friend! love it
Thank you! :)
love your fix videos and keep them coming
Thank you very much!
nice awesome fix

I loved your video! The protective varnish was a big tip for me.

Nice job my friend!
Thank you! :)

Thank you! :)
Nice job!
Thank you! :)
Great fix, but why wouldn't the SECOND regulator work? I have this exact same issue, but the regulator exhibits the same lack of outputs, even when I change it with another. There has to be a short somewhere....
Thanks! Well sometimes you have bad luck and also grab an other broken power regulator. Did you also check all the components on the regulator under a microscope? Also, sometimes you have to start back from the basics and get back to the power button. Is it clean? If so then you have to work your self forward through the circuit. There are free schematics to download on the Retro Six Wikia that can help to do so. Sometimes the DC jack or any other component on the path can be an issue.
Today I got a copy of Super Mario Land for me to play with on my game boy but when I was getting close to beating the game, my game boy started to make weird sounds and eventually the entire game boy restarted! but next time i tried to beat the game, it didn't crash AND I ACTUALLY BEAT THE GAME!
Could be that the cartridge lost contact with the game reader for a milisecond or some other power fluctuations appeared. Pretty annoying, huh? I probably would get pretty angry. ;D
Are the pcb references available to check?
There are only community made schematics and board scans on the RetroSix Wikia free to download.
@@x-fix Thanks! It's much appreciated!
@@NesuProps Your very welcome! ;)
the technique of connecting jumper wires from through holes is always amazing!! Mr X!!
Thanks! :)
what is the gray paste you keep using?
Thats Solderpaste! :)
Those traces you fixed don't appear to go anywhere and only served as test points so you probably could have avoided wasting time on those two. ;) Aside from that not surprising resoldering the chip connections worked. I've heard this is a common failure point for these games as the flexing of the PCB as the cart is removed/inserted over the years would cause some legs to come up due to cracked solder joints. I think some GB/GBC carts are having this issue too.
Your sure these are only testing points and not gound pads or something? I remember having at least 1 of those games, where fixing these solved the whole problem.
@@x-fix They are labeled TP on the silkscreen so most likely just test points. Unless there is vias hiding under those pads. Is there anything under them on the other side of the PCB? If not then those test pads aren't needed for the card to work. I didn't see any path to ground for those pads. They appear to be isolated and only connected via a single trace.
@@MagnumForce51 I need to check that out once I get an other GBA Pokemon Game in!
Yeah, those are there only for testing.
I had an NA snes that couldn't read games, only super mario RPG. It was super weird.
That sounds indeed weird....
Got the same problem with a SFC , will only read SF2WW
A fantastic exercise in working with extreme conditions, well done. While I would absolutely attempt to do something like this for the sake of doing it, that board is so badly degraded that I probably would've skipped re-masking it after confirming what it was and that I could get it working again, and transferred the chips to a new board entirely.
Thanks very much! :) Well indeed it would be a good idea to use a complete new board but since this is the only one I ever had in this level of condition I am not sure if its worth to order only 1 new board. Also I honestly wouldnt know where to order or if there are already templates for these ones somewhere? If I had a donor board I would have probably done that. But its pretty rare that a Super Mario Land Chip goes bad. But no donor at hand until today...
Great Work! Don't know if you might be interested in a YT video collab. (PCBWayDaisy)😜
Removing stickers is so scary! 😱 But when you applied the glue, that really started to look like my work repairing books!
The warm air helped a lot to be honest! Wasnt as difficult as I thought it would be!
@@x-fix Not sure if it works with this kind of label, but i use IPA to get the original Labels of Gameboys from the old shell to a new one. The IPA dries and the Label sticks again.
@@michael.andreae My concern was that the paper part of the label would get messed up if I put IPA on it. Im talking about the colors, font ect...
Nice repair ❤❤❤
Thanks buddy!
Toller Fix ! So viele Traces einfach kaputt und die arme Hülle. Da blutet das Herz
Mich hats "gefreut", anspruchsvollere Arbeit als nur Batteriewechsel, oder Pin Anlöten. :P
I was messing with you. Good stuff. I didn't know you could repair tracers like that.
Thanks, I guess?
Do you have some brass to clean the tip of your iron? Seems like heat transfer is a bit inefficient even though it had enough power to burn the pcb at some point. Good job with the controller
Yeah I have everything I need. I learned that I need to set the heat way higher for those PCBs. The manifacutre solder is stubborn at 350 celsius. 400 should be better.
Great video ❤❤❤
Thanks buddy!
