CAN NIXOS REPLACE ARCH LINUX?
Просмотров 6 тыс.2 года назад
SUPPORT ME ON KO-FI: ko-fi.com/lechanlabs In this video, we explore a declarative linux distro called, NixOS. Unlike other distros, NixOS uses a config file that not only determines what packages are installed but also configs other parts of the OS as well. Because of it's way of system management, I threw some programs that I usually use at it, in order to see if I can replace Arco Linux with ...

here is a question. why hasn't valve implimented this apparently fairly simple patch?
🤷♂️
Awesome video! Got some mods up and running thanks to your guide, Alhamdulillah (ultimate praise and gratitude being to God)! The one that I couldn’t get up and running was portal the flash version. For whatever reason I’m receiving and every time I launch it. May Allah (S.W.T.) guide you and bestow upon you His Blessings; Ameen. # F R E E P A L E S T I N E !
Verry nice video, can I ask how did you download the 2012 version?
Internet archive is your best friend when getting old software
Rip you deserve a lot more subs
Hey man, was wondering, I know you need Game Porting Toolkit to run Portal 2 on silicon macs but what about intel?
Does it matter if I have an Intel Mac on the newer 64 but only operations systems because it's not working
I did the exact same thing on my intel mac and it works perfectly
Extremely good video on early computing.
Im Glad you liked it. Stay tuned because im gonna do a video on OS/2

i really fw the little imperfections in your videos haha.
How did you install Windows 2000 Professional?
Winworldpc
@@lechanlabs Thanks, but does it work with modern resolutions and with modern hardware? (I mean, is the build in the video modified in any way, or is it like that out of the box?)
Yes, it works in VMWare and VirtualBox. Just need to update it with Legacy Update, and then install VMWare Tools.
@@lechanlabs Thank you very much!
This is sick, thank you for showing this off random person RUclips wants me to see, have a nice day
surprising for a dollar capture card, you can like buy a burger for that price
Literally 79 cents less than a McChicken
Any reason why Visual Studio 97 was not included?
Interesting! It's nice how MS is always trying to introduce something new but most of the trials fall into the limbo.
Hey mate just discovered your video. Do this work for Portal 2 as well?
You will need GPTk for Portal 2
Does GPTk work for Portal 1 as well? Or do I need to do this for Portal 1 and then GPTk for Portal 2? @@lechanlabs
Excellent review VS!
Yeah, something is not right, what is that bit rate holy.
How did you get all these old copies of VS?
Through Internet Archive.
why am i not suprised
itsstal ms-ttfonts to fix vmware?
Does i work in Proton?
if you know how to run non steam games in proton, the i believe it should.
@@lechanlabs add them as non steam then force steam play and select latest version of proton (other than experimental)
Is the installer offline
Theres actually two installers. The basic one installs offline. The advanced one installs offline but adds additional software from the repos online.
the question is will I be able to say: arch btw? if not whats the point lol
Well, arch btw kinda carries the brag of sacrificing a day to get an os up and running with you workflow manually. However you work with pacman and AUR anyways so i say, yeah you can!
6:36 i mean that sure is a level
that sure is a level
turn up ur bitrate lmao
Looking back at the video it does look grainy, not sure how that happened
nix os can fully replace arch it has the most large linux pkg repo + the most updated
I agree, the problems i had back when the video was uploaded, are essentially now resolved.
yes but its literally all build from source, no bin
@@jakedespppp Packages are source-based but there's a binary cache that has all the packages as binaries, which it downloads from automatically, Nix only compiles packages from source if you haven't updated in a long time and the binaries were cleared from the cache.
@@comradeklaymore i understand that now. when i posted this comment i was still a lowly arch plebian. however i have ascended to the realm of superiority with nixos. now i can install my entire system with one github repo, while the arch commoners have to type in every single package with their stubby cheeto fingers.
@@jakedespppp you are a great man o7
I installed the Portal 2 SDK on Linux (Arch) via the native Steam launcher last week, and it just worked right away. Other than some graphical glitches in Hammer. But it suddenly completely stopped working 2 days ago. I didn't change anything. Didn't mess with any files, didn't remove or installed any other software. It suddenly refused to even launch. I've spent the last 2 days trying to get it working again, tried everything, it just won't launch. Extremely annoying. I haven't watched this video yet, but if this doesn't work for me, I'm done. I love making maps for Portal 2 and I'm a hardcore Linux enthusiast, but even on windows it runs like shit and crashes all the time. It's a shitty, almost 20 year old piece of software. The mapping community is still very much alive, maybe now more so than ever before. We deserve better from Valve.
Have you updated wine before it stopped working?
@@lechanlabs No, I was running it on Proton, directly from the Steam client. I tried older versions of Proton, Proton-GE, and different versions of Wine. I also did a fresh install of Steam, Portal 2 and the SDK, plus I manually removed any remaining files before reinstalling, just to make sure the install was clean. Still, no luck. Every time I try to run hammer, directly or indirectly, nothing happens. The only thing I haven't tried yet is running it in a VM. But, a few years ago, when I was still on Windows, I often had the same problems. Lots of crashes, or it would just suddenly refuse to run.
Dont worry, Hammer suddenly borking used to happen on windows too xD
The answer is yes, archlinux is terrible. The only reason people are not using NixOS is because they are too lazy to go through the learning curve.
It's genuinely annoying to have to go to your little configuration file to add a pkg. Although I should probably have a better shortcut like in rofi or smth. It's still a very cool distro just Def not for everyone at all
@@noah5592 your answer confirmed what he said mentioned rofi and shortcut show how you're lazy to edit a single simple file in nix the user don't rely to the config all time want to add pkg + there pkgs manager to add more pkgs
@@momomaniac1234 The package manager isn't recommended to be used on NixOS, so that's not a real option, don't be disingenuous and pretend it is. Learning flakes and the nix language is too much work for any regular desktop user that just wants to do simple things, and the lack of documentation only exacerbates the problem.
in the end of the day, when you already setup everything for your work/productivity/gaming and have stable working system and don't need to add any package, you'll not "feel" that you're using arch/nixos/ubuntu/other linux..
Looks gorgeous and powerful--- I'd love to run that-- but I know diddly squat about Arch and could make a mess of things VERY quickly...
Archcraft would be a great distro to get your feet wet with arch, but Manjaro is a better option if you are more used to Gnome/KDE/XFCE.
@@lechanlabs I already know about Manjaro (used it a good while) and other "generic" arch based distros.. I was thinking of leaning some arch stuff.. Arcolinux comes with that " arch university:: in phases where you bulid your own system- that might be good.. but will be a bit later-- I need this one for work right now..

Hey, thanks
WoW so cool i will try it today only 👍👍👍
Looks wonderful. it's what i wanted. i'll try it. thanks.
Very nice video, but, are you using pure wine, or do you need to install something throught winetricks?
I used pure wine to accomplish this
Hi can I copy archcraft's openbox configuration to arch Linux, now I am using arch plasma I think openbox is more lightweight and still minimalist aesthetic
Yes, but you will need to find out what software it utilizes like rofi and polybar, because going through with it.
Hii sir, do you read comments?
Yes
