Hey there Liz and Brian! My name’s Maxwell, and I currently live in the US, in Montana with my wife and two kids. We were entertaining the idea of moving abroad for a little over a year now, and I was wondering if we would be able to relocate to NZ. I’m currently employed as a fuel transport truck driver, and my wife works in Environmental Sciences. She runs the pesticide inspection for agricultural services through the Assiniboine/Sioux tribe. If it’s possible, which Visa should we try to pursue in order to relocate? She’s college educated and I’m a tradesman with the truck driving. Thank you for your podcast by the way! I’ve been listening religiously while on my driving routes!

Hi - just listened to your podcast. Speaking as a long term HR Manager - the Kiwi Culture question has three different responses depending on your circumstances. The HR Manager is ascertaining if you are a good fit and likely to create difficulties or have issues in settling in. Those will cost the company money, time, etc. Answer one - You have visited NZ and have an understanding of the culture. Answer two - you have friends and family in NZ and belong to support groups. All have pledged support and you have been able to ascertain culture and discussed with friends and family. Answer three - you have not visited the country and have no support network, but have done a lot of research and discussed with friends and family. The HR Manager will ask questions - to ensure you are not pulling the wool. The correct response should include a plan for when you arrive - like do a tiki tour, join groups/network, become involved - embrace the lifestyle. The reason they ask this is to see if you actually want to change or just transplant your existing life. I wont bore you with the questions etc. - you will get the picture and undoubtedly have your own HR advisors, Cheers Mr G

With only 5 million people and the brutal censorship, the kiwis are slow to catch on. It is not the older people using the negative words as much as we in the USA call "rednecks" just backwords idiots. You have to be carefull when your PM gives a speech on banning Free Speech. I have reseached NZ for the past 5 years my son is a resident married a kiwi and has 2 lovely boys. The things you don't like in NZ are no big deal just words.

Moving country's is a huge step that, if you want as few hiccups as you can, it's important to do max research. Cut down on the difficult to understand surprises would be the objective here. The Internet is a valuable resource. Yet many folks don't do that, instead they'd rather bitch and complain about the new home of their choice. At one time this was endemic, especially in the ways of British immigrants. This is where the one time ubiquitous, "Moaning Pom" epithet came about. In truth though, this was as much the result of a government preferring immigration from UK rather than anywhere else. Now, in 2022, China is where most, but certainly not all, immigrants originate from. I adore Cats, yet too many of them at the same time and in the same place, is an infestation - same as for humans too. Nowadays, I'd be hard pushed to spot a Pom as I make my way around town. Several decades ago, Poms stuck out like dogs ears. They just looked different from locals but still always complaining about something that nobody else gave a flying fig about. Now that it's been years since the immigrant ships with their passenger lists chocka block with £10 Poms - the amount immigrants were charged as their contributions to the cost of a sea passage on an immigrant boat from UK to NZ, tied up alongside in the harbours of our major cities they are so few now or I'm not getting around as much as I once did. A close relative is an RN here in Aotearoa NZ. HCA's have a tough run of it too, but my own observation is that the Adhern lead government would rather spend most of our hard to come by funds on supporting Gang initiatives than our over worked and exhausted Nurses and medical health care workers generally. Unless the Adhern government changes its self serving initiatives, then my habit of supporting Labour since 1972 will cease and instead....... As a hospital nurse, our niece has been threatened with physical harm from gangsters who also threatened harm to her family. This is life working at a public (government) hospital here in Aotearoa New Zealand. I'm not too sure if any influx of immigrants from the UK advantages NZ especially and you should have mentioned to your Pom buddies, that there are immigration procedures to go through and being Poms guarantees you nothing - not anymore. New Zealand's tight connection now, like it or leave it, is with Asia and the Pacific. China has invested heavily more funds than exist even in The Bank of England, into most of the small island states located in the Indopacific. A situation that did not exist during the Anglo Europeans parsimonious reign. All the British have left, now that they are all alone since withdrawing from the EU or EEC as it was once labelled is to scurry around the capital cities of the country's that once comprised part of the British Empire, just the countries with a majority white skin population though, the air is cleaner and more to their liking nowadays it would seem. What is no doubt a deliberate confrontation of China by the self obsessed British Royal Navy, is to show off their brand spanking new Carrier based battle group along the South China Sea bolstered by the US Navy and the Royal Australian Navy, just to keep it, all in the family. The US leases out the jet fighters the British need to give their Carriers a purpose other than only grandstanding just like the blighters once did. Times have changed and the Anglospher has too. This is a changed era where its China and the United States sharing the top spot GDP - the British are at number seven. Seemingly, The Times They Are A Changing - still.

John key the previous prime Minister pushed the value of spending $$$ on internet all across NZ because he knew that will be our competitive edge against the world. Unfortunately the Labour govt stop a few of the infrastructure which has been a great pity. The amazing tramping trails across NZ was also Key's pet project.
