This guitar was just strung up less than 24 hours prior to the recording, so it is still settling in under the string tension. This is always more or less the worst the guitar will ever sound. Nice looking guitar, what’s your thoughts on Padauk as a tone wood?
The specific material used for the back and sides has little to no impact on the sound of the guitar. All my experience building, the tests I have done, and the tests and experiments of others supports that idea. The only thing that really matters is how the material is used by the luthier. Any wood can make a guitar sound good or bad or loud or quiet or warm or bright, etc etc etc, it just depends on how the luthier used it. It takes a lot of experience to understand the feeling of spruce or cedar to get the most out of the tops and the same is true for all the different materials we use for the back and sides. So with that in mind, I have used Padauk a lot and I like it. The colour is not for everyone, that is for sure. Working with it is quite similar to working with Indian Rosewood, but the dust makes everything orange and the grain is a pain to fill when it comes time to polish the guitar. The first guitar I made and my personal guitar is also made of Padauk. It is good and underrated.

A clear and very warm sounding guitar. Re the eveness of sound on all fretboard positions, especially on the first string, it is difficult to know without playing the guitar. Anyway, well-done on the new project and new instrument !

Lovely sounding guitar, how much does the back and sides wood choice affect the sound? Any thoughts on maple back and sides?
Bamboo makes a very nice guitar, but in my experience the material used for the back and sides makes very little difference to the sound. How it is built / how the material is used is all that matters. You can read more about my bamboo guitars here: www.evankingmaguitars.com/bamboo And I love maple! Spruce/Maple traditional is pretty much the best in my opinion.

Very interesting, I checked out your web site on the use of bamboo. The guitar sounds great and the results of your comparison study on bamboo versus ziricote and padauk were impressive. Where do you source the bamboo? Clearly this is processed material, right?
Thanks! Yeah the bamboo is a processed material. The specific material I use was manufactured somewhere in the EU (the Netherlands I think), but they no longer make it and I bought the last they had. I have been looking for another source of bamboo that would be suitable for guitar making for a while. I recently heard of another manufacturer in the US that makes a similar product. I am waiting on samples from them so I can see if it is any good.
RUclips just randomly recommended me this video and guitar made of bamboo is something I just had to hear :) I know bamboo is used for various traditional flutes such as shakuhachi, quena, bansuri and xiao (I had some of these and weirdly I recognize the sound quality even though it's a completely different type of instrument, there is just something about bamboo resonance, hmm...). From my experience with flutes it's very susceptible to temperature changes and cracks easily from as much as opening a window during winter (these are very easy to repair though). Does it behave differently when used to build a guitar? I'm quite fascinated with the concept and would love to learn more about bamboo as guitar tonewood.
Bamboo does indeed crack very easily, which I have learned the hard way in the past.. since then, I have specially designed my bamboo guitars in such a way to prevent the cracks. It is no longer an issue for my guitars :)
