GENESIS ALBUMS: The Complete Guide from Weak to Wow [List]
Great video, Dave! My favorite of the 6 is the debut album from Yes. I think it is very underrated and as good as some of their later albums. Trespass is underrated also!
Both terrific albums.
Thank you for the excellent review! Yes is back!!!
Hi there. Thank you for watching my video. I’m dead you enjoyed it. This combo of Jon and the Band Geeks has recreated the classic Yes sound for me which has been exceptional. So good. All the best. Dave✅✅
Hi Dave, what an interesting history. Went to read more about the X-ray bootlegs, what a great way of passing the censorship. Jazz and The Beatles (for a change) were the beginning. Didn't know that Cliff Richards was the first pop artist to performed in the USSR (1976), thought it was Elton John. A friend told me some stories about how nuts was the underground prog-rock "movement" in old Czechoslovakia and parts of the eastern block. He went there as a student in the early 70s. Came back with tons of classical records and artists that now-a-days are no big deal. But yeah, his story was all about radios, cassettes and hidden places. Due to the classical and folk connection, Pink Floyd, and the other big names in prog-rock must had been a delicious and dangerous "Molotov cocktail" for some. Great video. Cheers.
Hi. Thanks for watching. I really enjoyed researching this one as it was different and interesting to learn about how they went about getting around the censorship. All the best. Dave✅✅
Just goes to show how transcendent music can be. Roger Waters' lyrics are heard in a totalitarian dictatorship. Great video!
Hi there. Thanks for watching. There is such a delicious irony to the story isn’t there. All the best. Dave✅✅
Mr. Roger Waters would disagree with your cold war propaganda.
Hi there. Thanks for watching. He probably would 😄😄All the best. Dave✅✅
Still my favourite SAHB track after nearly 50 years
Hi Tony. Thanks for watching. He was such an amazing musician with a wicked sense of humour he added to a lot of his material. All the best. Dave✅✅
Early space rock 🪨 was amazing Mostly associated with drug use 😮
Hi Carl. Thanks for watching. In fairness it probably was looking back. Take care. Dave✅✅
Hey Dave! The Beatles went through something very similar. Their music and albums were outlawed in Russia. Kids went to underground clubs to listen to their music. People would spend a week's pay just to buy an album. Things didn't change until Paul McCartney was finally invited to play some shows in the Red Square once it was the 21st century. Can't imagine America having laws against certain bands or music. Great vid Dave! Excellent job!!!👍☮️😎
Hey Jeff. You’re a star. Great feedback, encouragement and added info as well #superfan ✅✅
@@TheAlbumReviewchannel Thanks Dave!👍😎
Thanks Dave, very informative, even for us oldies. We take it for granted accessibility to music, so it is amazing that some countries and their governments would disapprove of western music and potential influences for years. Fortunately, Russia would relent and allow an excellent group like Uriah Heep to play 10 nights in Moscow in 1987, even when their records were only available on the black market! Russia was able to open up to western music, and in the case of rock, the Moscow Music Peace Festival of 1989 gave both Russian and Western bands a platform to play together (wish I had been there)!
Hi Keith. Thanks for watching and some great background info there I wasn’t aware of. Strange country indeed. All the best. Dave✅✅
Interesting video Dave. Well done.
Hi Pat. Thanks for watching. I really enjoyed getting into the nuts and bolts of this one. Some great information I wasn’t aware of. Cheers. Dave ✅✅
Totally agree with the video title. My favorite Styx song of all time. The keyboard/synth bit mid-song is epic.
Hi Gary. Thanks so much for watching the video and leaving a comment. It means such a lot. All the best. Dave✅✅
I absolutely loathed it on release but the passage of time has considerably mellowed my opinion. It's still not a favourite but I agree with your analysis here. All the best. 😁
@@Rikkykins57 Hi Rich. This was always a Tull album I liked and I think it is because I bought it as it came out which wasn’t something that I did too often as pennies were tight back in the day. Although very left turn I still love it. Take care. Dave✅✅
@@TheAlbumReviewchannel From watching the video again I've re-listened to it and in all honesty it is really rather good. All the best. 😁

Hi Dave, a hidden deep cut indeed. Beautiful song, it is YES 100%. Listening to "Yesterdays" for the sake of staring at that amazing cover art. Will play their first 2 albums in a row. Ripe for a remixing !!!. Cheers.
@@Ignatius91 I love that debut album

Hi. Thanks for watching. I didn’t know that. Cheers for the info. All the best. Dave✅✅
Thanks again Dave for another excellent video reaction. Great to see others love this album. I bought it on cassette and had the live video. Thought this was a fantastic album with Jobson providing a refreshing change to their sound. And in Black Sunday, there was one of my favorite Tull tracks. Whilst this album signaled a massive change in Tull's line up, the new recruits helped provide Ian A with a masterpiece of an album, and a different sound that was then representative of a musical electronic style that what was to come in the 1980's.
@@keithwatkins7908 Hey Keith. Great to hear from you. I like this album a lot and I’d forgotten how good it was. Thanks for watching and all the best to you for the new year.
@@TheAlbumReviewchannel Thanks Dave, Happy New Year to you. 8 hours ahead here in the Philippines, so not long to a new and hopefully better year.

Hi Dave. I enjoyed watching the VHS of the A tour, but not the album. Such a drastic change of sound and line-up. Wilson's remix has made it justice with the bonus tracks, and now I enjoy listening to some songs. Classic Tull ended IMHO with "Stormwatch" (again Wilson's remix with the bonuses has taken it to a new level). A fine album, not mind-blowing. Cheers.
I love Stormwatch (Maybe my fav) and definitely a future review again. This one is pretty decent though as much for the change in direction as for the music. Take care. Dave
@@TheAlbumReviewchannel Wow, really?, "Stormwatch"?, never would have guessed that one. Thanks for your reviews, I'm so into classical music that you bring me, let's say to a middle ground in the "ether" (LOL). Happy new year Dave, and the best for 2025 for you and dear ones, "Sally" of course, and the channel and it's viewers. Ignacio.
@ Sorry I missed this earlier. Same to you. All the best. Sally sends her regards 🐾
Hi Dave, what a great review. Will love that album forever, even the 94 suite for their "Return of the Manticores" box-set, only good thing that came out as a bonus of that garbage "In the Hot Seat". And love Mussorgsky's piano suite and it's different arrangements for orchestra. Classical musicians are still doing arrangements for it (even though Ravel's so far the ultimate). Don't know how many are out there. Would have loved a studio version, but they never felt like reworking it, it was "passe" for 'em in 1971. Wilson discovered some bits while remixing their 1st LP. Cheers!!!!.
Hi there. Great info as always. This was my first prog LP I bought and it took me forever to get into it. Strange there was no studio version as you say. Great to hear from you. Thanks for watching. All the very best. Dave✅✅
Not sure I'd call this one a masterpiece, but it's certainly a cracker for some. The unfortunate and sudden death of Glascock, and just as sudden departure of his good friend Barlow (one of Rock's best drummers) took the wind out of Anderson's sails during recording Stormwatch, after which the exit of Evan _and_ Palmer was the final nail for classic JT. A drastic change of direction was in the air (for every prog band, really) they'd taken the "folk" theme as far as they could. At least on the USA tour of Stormwatch (a strange tour after sunglasses wearing Ian had nearly lost an eye due to a fan throwing a rose at him), UK 2.0 was touring with them as the opening act. I think Ian really took a liking to that sound, and I'll admit that Jobson was quite a performer. Would it have fared better as a solo Anderson recording? Back then, many people thought Ian _was_ Jethro Tull, he just didn't have the name recognition to the average person who wasn't already an avid fan. I certainly understand the suits here. for a decade, JT went from blues to hard rock to folk rock almost seamlessly. This was a dramatic departure mostly because of Jobson's virtuoso performances - which changed JT's dynamics greatly. Well worth checking out, and one of the last 3 decent efforts from 20th century Ian Anderson.
A is pure class, the box set is incredible. Great video Dave. Happy New Year.
Cheers Pat. Same to you my friend
I like this album

For me, "A" is Jethro Tull last brilliant album ;)
hey Z-eb. it was so much better than I remembered but it still gets a bad press
Thanks
This really is a hidden gem. Like a lot of first albums this is a snapshot of their show at the time. You can hear why they had a reputation as being a polished act. You don't get to support Cream at the Royal Albert Hall if you're a bunch of greasy yobs thrashing away in the back room of 'The Lamb & Flag' 😂
That’s a brilliant pub name. Was it a local near you?😀😀I love this track as it’s just so full of hope and promise. Cheers. Dave✅✅
@@TheAlbumReviewchannel It was notorious for a certain type of, let's say 'raucous music' and their rowdy followers. Needless to say a few underage sessions took place there thanks to an indulgent landlord. 😂

Excellent video Dave. You've done such a good job with these short primers in Prog. Your love for the subject comes over so very well. I remember buying the album on release as it was sold for about £1.50, my weekly wage for the paper round I was doing at the time. Happy days. All the best for the New Year. 😁
Hey Richard. Thanks so much for kind words - it really means a lot. I’m trying to be more specific on the Big 6 bands at present to help get a real understanding of these groups. So it’s a bit about focus on them at present. I did a paper round and got a bit less if I remember - but I didn’t deliver too many papers. The good old days eh? All the best to the you for the New Year as well Cheers Dave✅✅
It will be a Good Day, the song after Homeworld(not Homeward) is my favorite Yes song, because it changed my life. It’s just a bit ahead of Close to the Edge and Homeworld.
Hi Jake. Thanks for this. I’m not familiar with the title but going to check it out. All the very best. Dave✅✅
Thank you. Been w them since ‘76. I’m w Jeff below. Walsh unquestionable most under-rated vocalist in rock. Pure talent. Wish the rest of the world would listen just once. Start w journey from mariabronn.

This one was my gateway drug to progressive music. I had friends that played in bands, and were into classical music. One of them played this for me after I was rolling my eyes at the Peer Gynt he was playing. A mostly Black Sabbath and Alice Cooper fan, I was floored. Then he later played Tarkus and I was a fan forever. These guys were incredible live, I’m so glad to have seen them in their heyday. How Emerson just seemed to instinctively know how to coax sounds from an out of the box Moog is amazing in itself. RIP Keith and Greg.

Hey Dave! ELP!! Thanks for another excellent video. Recording live music was new at the time. Other prog bands learned from ELP. I feel they gave YES the confidence to record their triple live YESSONGS. It's still one of YES' most popular albums. I really love live albums. "Endsong," the closing track of The Cure's Songs of a Lost World, is a haunting, expansive piece that serves as an emotional and sonic curtain call. The track opens with an ethereal synth pad, enveloping listeners in a dense, atmospheric soundscape that feels both timeless and melancholic. The Genesis-like drumming, steady and restrained, adds a sense of grandeur to the piece, as layer upon layer of instrumentation builds over the course of its sprawling six-and-a-half-minute introduction. It is an epic, cinematic start that lures you into a reflective journey.Smith’s vocals, as ever, are arresting. His voice has aged beautifully, imbued with the same emotional weight that has made him a gothic icon for decades. However, despite the stunning vocal delivery, the song risks losing some listeners due to its lengthy instrumental sections. While the atmosphere is immersive, the drawn-out intro and midsection may test the patience of those who prefer tighter compositions. Still, for fans who revel in The Cure’s brooding, slow-burn style, this track is nothing short of masterful.Lyrically, "Endsong" is poignant and introspective. Smith reflects on the passage of time and the loss of hope, a theme that resonates deeply in today’s world. The song’s verses, filled with imagery of a blood-red moon and forgotten dreams, mirror Smith’s personal disillusionment with the direction the world has taken since his youth. His memories of watching Apollo 11’s moon landing with his father, contrasted with his later feelings of societal decline, add layers of depth to the song. It's a reflection on the erosion of optimism, a theme that looms large over the entire album. The chorus, simple yet powerful, reinforces the sense of desolation: "It's all gone, it's all gone, nothing left of all I loved." This repetition, coupled with the stark instrumental bridge, heightens the emotional weight of the track. The final moments of the song feel like an echo of loss, with Smith repeating the words "left alone with nothing" as the music fades into silence. It's a heart-wrenching conclusion, both for the track and the album as a whole."Endsong" is a quintessential Cure track-dark, introspective, and deeply evocative. Though its length and pacing might not appeal to everyone, it is a fitting end to Songs of a Lost World, encapsulating the themes of isolation and disillusionment that run throughout the record. The Cure remains masters of their craft, and "Endsong" is another testament to their enduring ability to make music that speaks to the soul.
