The game was better than with more running, mud, blood and guts.
Lombardi easily could’ve had seven titles instead of five. The Packers dominated the Eagles in the 1960 NFL championship game, but the big play was just missing. A costly decision to go for fourth down instead of a short field goal early in the game deep in Eagles territory cost the Packers, as did having to accept two chip-shot field goals instead of TD’s, as well as a missed 12-yard FG just before halftime. Later in the game, Lombardi went for it on 4th down and failed again, this time from the Eagles 22. Converting any one of those opportunities might have given GB the win. They lost by 4 and the game ended with the Packers on the Eagles 9. Three years later, Lombardi had one of his best teams at 11-2-1, but both losses were to the Bears who finished 11-1-2, and GB didn’t even win the Western Conference.
The year Lombardi stepped down, they missed the playoffs-and just barely. If the Old Man had come back for one more year-and made it clear that it was his last year-the Packers would have rallied behind him and definitely made the playoffs and probably won another Super Bowl. They would have beaten the jets for certain.
Begs the question. Why has there not been a major motion picture about his life?
There was a movie about the early years with the Packers. The name was "legend in Granite" and it is on RUclips. Ernest Borgnine plays Vince Lombardi. It is a pretty good movie made for TV in 1973. Here it is ruclips.net/video/na5jZ7_BB4I/видео.html
@@rickjohnson1266 yeah. I've seen it. Not a top quality film in my view. Used old highlight footage. There needs to be a grand scale picture that's worthy of his great story. Can't figure out why it hasn't been done?
2:24 No Lombardi (and Packer) tribute would be complete without this footage. Just exquisitely executed. Note that Forrest Gregg is playing Right Guard. And look at Bob Skoronski run!
Helped Larry Brown develop into a great RB. After Green Bay he got Washington on a winning track. I am convinced he would have led Washington to its first Super Bowl win if cancer had not take him from us too soon.
I love the panorama view of Lambeau Field at 0:35. Back before luxury skyboxes and huge video boards. I remember attending a few games there growing up. It was all about the game on the field. Pure and simple.
Owners were about money back then too, so it wasn't "pure and simple".
The magic is perfection.
That's "great defense" 🤨played by Detroit's No. 44 for the final 45 or so yards of Taylor's TD rumble. "Let's see... if I just keep backpedaling..." Is #44 Dick LeBeau??
The music makes the hair stand up, on the back of my neck!!!!
Vince Lombardi was the GOAT. He had 8 plays and used them to near perfection, with 5 Championships and won the love and respect of his players
Coach Lombardi not only was but still is the greatest coach and motivator of all time
"WHAT, THE"HELL" IS GOING ON OUT HERE"!!??,,," IS JUST PERFECTION"!!! NEVER GETS OLD," I LAUGH EVERYTIME",,,
Five Titles in only Nine Years! THE G.O.A.T. OF COACHING **UNDISPUTED, PERIOD**!!!!
You will see him in heaven with Jesus
Man when those big offensive lineman came around to clear the way in that Green Bay sweep; you never saw a more beautiful play! I could watch clips of that forever and it would still give me goose pimples and chills like I was watching it for the first time!
Greatest coach of all-time. No telling how many more titles he would have had if he had lived longer. I'm still in awe of him after all these years.
The next year, the Packers missed the playoffs by only one game. Had Lombardi been coaching that year, they would have certainly made the playoff and even gotten to another Super Bowl -abd they would have done it it for "the old man" ... every Packer would have given everything to see that happen one more time.
Greatest Coast of All-Time? INDEED!!!
5 champion NFL championships in 7 years and victorious in the first two superbowls. Greatest coach of all time in my book.
A truly iconic individual that helped the NFL become what it is today. His players not only achieved excellence in football, but also became successful in their retired life as they became multi-million dollar business men. His story is the fabric of history and dreams. Truly a miracle! We will never see such an incredible individual again.
Lombardi thought of himself as a developer and molder of young men, not just a football coach. You are exactly right.
There will never ever be another Coach Lombardi. Love you coach.
This is just CLASSIC. NFL Films at its very best.
" JUST GRABBIN EVERYBODY " 😂😂😂 RIP TO A LEGEND
"Every year the winner of the super bowl is awarded the Vincent Lombardi trophy, but his legacy is the greatest prize the game can offer." Wow what a man
John Facenda was gifted with vocal chords from God!! Perfectly suited to narrate a tribute to the greatest coach to ever inhabit this earth. Every syllable he utters touches the very heart and soul of the listener. Just as Facenda was the symbol of vocal artistry in his craft, Vincent Thomas Lombardi transcended the sport of Professional Football. View every tribute to this legend and they all trumpet the same basic tenet. THERE NEVER WAS, NOR WILL THERE EVER BE ANOTHER VINCE LOMBARDI. The greatest symbol of dedication to excel that ever lived. In any field of endeavor. His mere presence physically and spiritually was enough to inspire others to achieve beyond their wildest dreams. Five NFL Championships in his last seven seasons. Including victory in the first two Super Bowls. The trophy every team aspires to win bears his name. While the only trophy that will bear Bill Belichicks moniker is the "James Bond Award" for the NFL's greatest spy network. Facendas golden description of how Lombardi stood for everything that was good and solid in America rings truer now than ever before. Here in a nation that has plumbed the depths of despair with Joe Biden as our leader!! Since the Revolutionary War, no American leader could stand toe to toe with the qualities Lombardi embodied. Lombardi played with an integrated roster in an era when blacks were nearly ostracized from the game. Lombardi coached two players that were openly gay and threatened to fire anyone who said a word against them. WHAT A SUPERB BLEND OF MANLY QUALITIES HE WAS. Completely intolerant of lack of dedication. Totally open to everyone that placed the team above themselves. That is why Vince Lombardi stands above all others. As a coach. And more importantly as a man.
No one did a better job of describing Lombardi
FACENDA!!!!!!
If I had a voice like John Facenda nobody would be able to shut me up!
true story! the voice of god .. facenda!
I do not know. Go to Godzillarocks or David Veloskys Back Door (youtube channels) and ask them. They are NFL Films and music aficionados. A link to one of David's videos so you have his channel to email him ruclips.net/video/KjlPBVYpxEI/видео.html. Email him a link from my video.
What NFL Films video was this piece pulled from? It’s the greatest!
I get chills every time I watch this
How many of us would give all that we have to be remembered and eulogized in the way NFL Films remembered and eulogized the great Vincent Thomas Lombardi in this iconic segment?
i have watched this video a hundred times and it still gives me goosebumps watching the old time packers with the great vince lombardi!! greatness never fails!
"Lombardi....a certain magic still lingers in the very name." I'll always remember this music, and those words. This segment will be relived.....forever!
"Every year the winner of the Superbowl is awarded the Vincent Lombardi trophy, his legacy is the greatest prize the game can offer". Facenda combined with the music never fail to make me choke up and I've seen this A LOT.
Lol his Brooklyn accent is the best part
Brooklyn Iowa !
When they run that Packer Sweep at 2:33 how can you not love that? There is nothing tricky or even clever about what the Packers did. They just did it so good you couldn't stop it. For me as a German, that is what I think it means to be successful. When you can channel everything you are as a person into doing something right without breaking... that's good.
"he died with the courage and grace that had always marked him as a man" Damn, that's what I want someone to say at my funeral.
This is so inspiring and emotional. My favorite Coach ever. A magical time!
Favorite Coach ever, and GREATEST!!
Dear Coach Lombardi, is there any way you can come back? Not only does the NFL need you, but our country needs you.
Completely agree, but it is a bygone era. Even if he came back in all his Glory, very few would listen (unfortunately).
I would've given my left nut to play for him.
My dad went to Fordham so even thought I have absolutely no connection to Green Bay that glorious bastard goes and on. When I meet people from Wisconsin I always say this.
@Fordham, One of the "Seven Blocks of Granite". Your Father would know.
The Great man.
“Lombardi “ Goosebumps and shaking
If Lombardi saw how the packers were playing these day I know what'd he say "WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON OUT HERE"
Nobody will ever come close to Lombardi.
Nobody; NEVER.
That music though...
Goosebumps pure Goosebumps
Go Pack Go.
Vince will always be remembered... he was a Nfl pioneer A Seal Here.. And A Seal Here... And try to Run this play.. In the ALLEY! (Rip Vince Lombradi) :((
Few earn the Lombardi trophy. But they deserve it.
GRAB GRAB GRAB!!
Lombardi had 7 championship seasons in only 9 years. That's a much higher winning percentage than Bill Bellacheck and that one other team had.
Lombardi didn't have to worry about free agency, he got to keep all his guys year after year. Imagine if Belichick could have kept every pro-bowler he ever had. He'd win 7 out of 9 too
@@KHayes666 Lombardi inherited a team that was mediocre before he arrived...and made them winners.
@@manuginobilisbaldspot424 Belichick inherited a team that went 8-8 the year before and 2 years later won the Superbowl. Now imagine if Belichick could keep his back to back 03-04 team together without worrying about free agency.
