Bret Hart found out the news via phone call while he was on a 6 hour flight, and he couldn't even react to the news in the way he wanted due to being surrounded by complete strangers.
“I have the unfortunate responsibility to let everyone know that Owen hart has died!” It can’t get any more gentle than that! Thank you Owen! RIP ;( xx
My younger brother and I were watching the PPV and Adelphia cable, our TV provider, had an audio issue in which there was no sound. I had no idea what the wide shots were and why there was no match. The rest of the show had no sound either. I remember my parents calling and getting a refund for the show and me at 14 being pissed I can't hear anything. It wasn't until the next morning when I woke up for school that my Mom asked me if I knew a wrestler named Owen Hart, and then told me the story. None of my buddies except me at our lunch table ordered the show. I told everyone and nobody believed me. The next day, that Tuesday, we were all in such disbelief. RIP Owen, the King of Harts.
Yup. I didn't watch the ppv, it was my birthday, and I was out with friends. Heard as I left. When I got home I turned on the ppv channel where you could hear the announcers and the event was going so I thought I was lied to. Then I went on AOL chat rooms for WWF and quickly found out it was real.
@@Kevin-tz2lv I wasn’t a die hard fan anymore but my mom actually told me the next day and I remember watching raw that night and remember Jeff Jarrett saying Owen was never a nugget. My mom was also the person who told me and my 10 year old buddies playing basketball that Mike Tyson got knocked out for his first loss. I think Owen, if he wanted to, could have been one of the best wrestlers of all time. He was kind of like Brett, but he could do the pretty shit like Shawn could. That’s just my opinion though. I remember him in one of the wrestlemanias where he fought Mr. perfect and he did something I’ve never seen before or since. Mr. Perfect threw him against the ropes and did a hip toss that Owen somehow in mid air did a kind of kick out where he blocked the move. He was fighting as the Blue Blazer
@Steve-v4i well there was one point, and you probably didn't see it bsck then...since you said you weren't really into at the time, but it was after bret left and they did a "black hart" gimmick...look it up if you haven't seen it.. owen and vince in the ring...he was SO over...then they buried the storyline
As he was coming down he shouted to the fans below to watch out. Imagine you're about to die and your concern is for others. The Hart brothers are the best there was, the best there is, and the best that ever will be
There's no way I wouldn't have done that stunt No Way! I'm afraid of heights so why would I be stupid enough to do it? Vince would've just have to fire me for refusing to do it I would've been fired but at least I would've still be alive
It's awful to think that when JR told us Owen had died, he had been told literally ten seconds before going back on the air and had that ten seconds to process it, and try put into words how he would inform the viewers....
The silence after JR announced Owen's passing is still very heartbreaking to me, even after 25 years. It absolutely sucks to know one of the more genuinely sweetest guys passed away at such a young age and leaving two super young children. He's looking down to see Martha, Athena and Oje.
I can't imagine those who had to wrestle following Owen's fall could even concentrate on their matches, especially with Owen's blood still on the canvas.
You can tell in both JRs and King's voices, they knew that Owen wasn't going to survive this tragedy. King came back from the ring and his normal demeanor was drained out of his body. His friend and tag team partner Jeff Jarrett could barely make it to the ring. This changed people's perception of wrestling forever. Sadly, many more premature wrestler deaths would follow.
Twenty-five years ago tonight. In hindsight, we should be thankful social media and smartphones were not around to spare us the sensationalization of Owen Hart’s death.
I was 13 and got my mom to rent this ppv. Even at 13 with the somber tone I could tell this was not a gimmick and felt that something really bad was going down. A lot of people at the time felt this was a storyline but just with how jr and lawler were imo it was obvious it wasn’t
The crowd never knew Owen had died or heard the announcement. JR talking was only heard by the people at home watching the pay per view on TV not the people at the arena
Considering all the dark stuff coming out about Vince..it's not to crazy to think he killed Owen for breaking Steve Austin's neck with that piledriver right when Austin was hitting his prime
All you had to do watching it live was see Lawler's face when he came back into the frame. Like I'm sure everyone who saw, I was hoping against hope but when I saw him, I knew. 😥
So to clarify, Owen died doing a stunt that only the people in the arena were going to see, because the producers decided to show the interview over the stunt? My apologies for sounding callous, but that sounds like one of the most pointless deaths ever.
He was stepping off the ledge to dangle in place. Once the promo ended he was going to be lowered. Unfortunately the harness was not secure and he fell straight down unexpectedly.
I remember tuning into this show via "Scramblevision" and the first thing I heard after I put it on was Ross' announcement that Owen died. I was shocked and it's a moment I've never forgotten.
@@My_Legs_Hurt, I think that would be difficult to do. Because I'm not completely sure what the crowd reaction would be. Or what Howard Finkel would be able to tell the crowd. I think it was the right call to tell the PPV audience at home, because they didn't see what the live Kemper Arena crowd unfortunately did see. If this makes any sense.
It's just awful, even more by the fact that there's cheering fans all around, of course they didn't know but imagiune being JR and having to hear that while he's delivering the news.
What many didn’t know that night is that by the time they loaded him up and wheeled him out, he had already died. Owen fell close to 80 feet (8 stories) and landed chest first on the top rope. The impact of his chest against the rope severed his aorta, and he bled to death internally within a few short minutes. I estimate it took him 8 minutes to die due to the aorta being the primary artery within your whole body. As far as I know, no one has ever survived that.
Yeah I heard Val Venus say that he was the first to see Owen after they emts got past the curtain and he saw Owens eyes. They were open but "gone." He was already dead
Judas Priest guitarist, Richie Faulkner had a complete aortic dissection during a live show in 2021. He is quite possibly one of only a few to survive such an event. Its quite a story.
@@Nick-s-f an aortic dissection is not as severe. It just means there is a slight “cut” in the aorta. Owen’s descending aorta was completely severed into two.
0:47 I remember watching this incident when #OwenHart fell. His death still stings more then 2½ decades later.
Bret Hart found out the news via phone call while he was on a 6 hour flight, and he couldn't even react to the news in the way he wanted due to being surrounded by complete strangers.
I was young at the time but the more I see this the it pisses me off knowing it was an accident that should’ve been avoided.

That part where the crowd gave Owen a standing ovation as he was being carried out... Man.
At least Owen got 1 last standing ovation leaving the arena, even tho he was most likely gone by that time
Wonder he ever stood up after that
@@KohliVersion2K16 doubt it, once he tried to get up after the fall and after that, it was over

You can hear the emotion in Jerry Lawler's voice it said it all
I found out Owen died during CBS Radio News from WBBM Chicago around 10:00 later hours after the pay per view late that Sunday night
That they didn't end the show was absolutely shocking. If a footballer passed away during a match, there would be no question of continuing the game.
It's awful to think that when JR told us Owen had died, he had been told literally ten seconds before going back on the air and had that ten seconds to process it, and try put into words how he would inform the viewers....

The look and emotions on Lawlers face just tells you that he knew right away that Owen wasn’t going to make it 💔

When Jerry Lawler sat down, and said "It doesn't look good at all" I knew Owen was dead.
