70 Years of the Majestic Fanfare on the ABC
Просмотров 3,2 тыс.Год назад
2022 marks the 70th anniversary of the use of the Majestic Fanfare as the signal for ABC news bulletins. And according to the National Film and Sound Archive, use of Majestic Fanfare began on 31 December 1952 - 70 years ago today - but other sources give a date in January 1952 (it’s likely the January date is correct as it was the date given when introducing the 1982 synth version).

    I rode that train back in 1989. Went from Halifax to Sydney.Then took a ferry boat from North Sydney to Port Aux Basques Newfoundland. Then retraced my steps and went back to Halifax. Enjoyed the trip very much. Got permission to ride up in front in the control cab of the RDC with the engineer. Was sad to see the train discontinued. Greetings from connecticut.

    I used to travel by train, from Toronto to Sydney. Now it only goes as far as Turro. The train always shows up late in Turro, when bus services are no longer running. A cab is expensive, so I no longer go.

    Ironically in December of 2023, months after this video was posted and almost 30 years to the day of the "big" CBC cuts CBC announced 600 layoffs between the company's English and French language services as part of a plan to save about $125 million, plus cut its production and acquisitions budget by about $40 million a year. This means certain shows being reduced by the number of episodes produced or eliminated all togehter.

    I am from Quebec and I was even a separatist in my youth. but I have always respected and admired the monarchy and England because England never abandoned its children to a foreign power like France did in 1763 by abandoning "its few acres of snow" and 70,000 French Canadians in exchange from the island of Guadeloupe. Dieu sauve notre reine !

      @@carlosmpsenyorcapitacollon6977 because I believe that 2 referendums are enough. This greatly divides families and society. and anyway I think it's too late. There are many emigrants in Quebec and to win a referendum it would be necessary for at least 75% of Quebecers of French origin to vote for separation. It's way too much.

    When I was in childhood in Bali (because I was born in Bali, originally a Balinese too), I listened "Majestic Fanfare" was clearer when Nyepi Day (Silence Day) by my grandfather's AM/SW Radio (listening to ABC Radio, possibly it was broadcasted from Perth because It's so close by its distance to Bali). I miss this "sweet moment" (particularly when I'm going home again to Bali because I'm working in a city outside Bali). Thank you ABC, because I listened to this radio station, I know Majestic Fanfare too

    I think the video is slightly later than the 50s, as I believe the helicopter is a Westland Wessex not introduced with the R.A.N. until 1963, that said, great video. I feel slightly ripped off having been born too late to experience what Australia once was, but this video goes toward redressing this.

    You can hardly imagine the optimism in Canada at that time. It may have been single greatest accomplishment of those years, leaving us with rich sense of possibility that, despite our best efforts, we still haven’t quite exhausted. May it return again.

    And just two years later, the CBC logo itself would also get cut. Despite the fact that the current version of the CBC's logo with the plain circle in the middle has been around for more than 30 years, I have never liked it. I want the CBC to revert it to its 1974--1992 version. I like seeing the letter "C" in the middle of it.

    • @historiau
      @historiau Год назад

      I actually grew up about 5 minutes down the road from the CBC Cape Breton television and FM tower. The building had a large pre-1992 CBC logo on it until quite recently (I think they got rid of it when they tore the TV transmitter gear out of the building in 2012). As a result, I thought that was the CBC logo for a long time and I also have a strong affinity for that old version of the logo.

They would switch verses in English and French...I think it may have run on CTV in the eighties...thanks for looking into it.
