A quick shot of the underwater end of the hose and the amount of suction we can get by using gravity. The hose is 100' and is 2.5" in diameter. Vacuums all the smalls off rocks and gets in the cracks easily. But, alas, even gravity dredging has been deemed illegal.

We come up with some new ways to increase the capacity of our 2.5" gravity dredge. We use a 5 gallon bucket with some strategic holes and a 1/2" classifier screen to sort the material going into our hose. We try our approach on two areas and come away with some gold.

Getting ready for the new year by exploring our mother lode claim. We experienced the hows and whys of crevicing. We devised a cleanup box for use at home by dismantling a 4' neon 2 tube fixture and creating a sluice box from the empty metal shell. All final cleanups will be at home.

After watching a few of the gravity dredge videos shown here, we had to try it out on our claim. Did a gravity dredge test with a 30' length of 1.5" vacuum hose and got good enough results to upgrade to a 100' 2.5" dredge hose hooked to our sluice box. There were numerous challenges to overcome. How much hose did you use? Was it heavy
There's something called bernoulli's principle akin to the vacuum created by an open window in a moving car. I ponder a suction hose powered by a cone on a bottomless bucket into a pvc y for a prototype. The funnel is somehow secured in the rapids. No idea if it can be made to work. If somebody has input let me know please. Gravity dredging looks interesting but that hose is huge and you have only spots with a huge drop to work. Kudos on the gravity dredge.

if you are not using hose as a sluice, why not run straight hose? may be gold in hose riffles???

Just thinking about gravity dredging, how would it be to use the main hose a "pressure source" to hook another hose to? The other hose would be of a smaller diameter and the venturi action would allow one to suck up gravels with that second hose. This may make the process more flexible.One could even use a wide diameter(6"?) hose for the main water source and flair the top end with an even wider piece of hose and place this end at a high velocity point on the river to assure strong water flow for the venturi. Has this been tried by anyone?
6 years how about an update and what you guys have learned about the gravity dredge
Hello friends, greetings from Girona, Catalonia. Here I practice gravity dredging with a hose 100 meters long, about 330 feet, and with an inside diameter of only 1 "1/4 The results are very good as long as you have more than 10% drop. Delighted with your videos. Keep going!!!
What size hose is that?...also why is it runnung slow does hose size effect flow speed? Or is it because there is just one hole intake at the top. Like a y wouldnt force more water into it would it?
Two and one half inches diameter at 100 feet long and ten foot of drop. We were experimenting and the suction was adequate for what we were doing. Your idea sounds feasible but we were happy with what we had.

Rick Sharp did you have to prime the hose and fill with water before you could dredge? Or does it just do thaf anyways?
@@ziongray918 Priming the hose was a pain. We would carefully place the uphill side in the water and drag it up the stream making sure that it never gulped any air. The person on the lower end would feed the hose into the stream in a way where there wouldn't be any air trapped in any of the coils. Then we could suction gravel in peace and quiet.
@@ziongray918 I think bigger is better but also more expensive. Our hose cost $4 per foot and it needs to be smooth wall on the inside and no seams so that rocks wont get hung up. We were careful not to clog the hose but as long as the upper end didn't suck air we could find the clog and bang the hose til the clog passed through
How many feet drop does it take to get a good suction?
We got pretty good suction when we had a 10 foot drop over 100 feet

It's bear proof and it's a long haul to it so it's good for storage for food , first aid kit , small tools etc .

i just tried this all day with a 75 foot corrugated 3 in tube and it was a bitch.never got good suction no mater how steep the slope. didnt work . could barely suck up gravel. you need a 150 foot tube at the least if u ask me .but that would be a complete bitch also having to go up and down stream just to get it going .you have to cap the bottom make sure the top is submerged then go back and un cap .then go back .took me probably 15 trips. I'm beat.
if you use 1/2 inch mesh wire and bullet shape it over the inlet of the suction hose the bigger stones will just roll off the sides of the mesh and not clog the inlet. nice idea with the Y

I guarantee you expelled most of your gold out the sluice, you had it too submerged in water, a mistake ALOT of people make, more water in the sluice equals less pressure, and thus, less vortex for the gold to drop out in. Try less water in the sluice with a bit steeper angle. there is a few good videos by howtodrillawell that will help better explain this, Good luck and happy hunting!

What type of hose did you use? It looks like dredging suction hose and that must have been expensive!
Nice progress. Have you considered using a Y joint? Place the y below you. Y facing up, then use one hose as your suction, and the other place higher up in the stream. It will be your main source of power and your suction power will triple since it will now be working like a true jet dredge. Enjoy your videos keep em coming.

I agree...You could have one guy on a dry, warm float upstream dredging hardpan, while another person shovels a nice looking deep pool into a powerful Y connection downstream, with fancy grizzly bars and such, to make it easier, and count the nuggets, farther down, at the end of the day...Would this be legal where there is good pay, but no machinery is allowed, I wonder??? Sure would work dandy...

We wrapped the hose around a handtruck and duct taped the crap out of it. We wheeled it down the trail with a guy pulling from the front and another on a rope at the rear to keep it on the trail. It now lives in a job box on our claim so the only dragging now is up the creek to a new work area.

Not really. After we tested with 30 feet of 1.5" hose and got good results, we bought the biggest suction hose that we could afford -- 100 feet of 2.5" hose.
U use any simple math for head hose length,? Or just get out an du it?
The other end of the hose had a 2.5" to 2" restrictor nozzle at the end. We tried to clear away stones that would jam the hose but suffered some jams when we were filming, so did not get any usable shots. We have also soldered a piece of wire across the end of our nozzle to again reduce the size of material entering. Now just waiting for the water to go down and warm up a bit so that we can try it again. With video.
