San Marcos River Kayak Trip Jan 2021
Lions Club to Staple Dam on the San Marcos River. 15 mile over night trip. Camping is great at shady grove campgrounds. The water was lower than my previous trips down the San Marcos. The portage at Cummings Dam was a little more interesting this time as a few steps were missing from the stairs. Use caution when portaging the dam.

The Devils River has an alluring beauty that I have not seen anywhere else on earth. The waters have a rich turquoise color and an unbelievable clarity. The devils river will beat down your body but center your soul. Thanks to my buddy www.barlosonthetrak.com for the music. Check him out.
Escaping Flash Floods Near Del Rio Texas

Flash flood rains quickly filled the empty creek beds. The most exhilarating 7 miles down a dirt road I have ever experienced. LZ, James, Kirk and I were on our yearly dove hunt when we got flooded in and had to make the escape. My blood was pumping.

I had a great time in Port O'Connor. I am not the best salt water fisherman but my friends showed me a good time. It was hot and the bite was slow but you can't beat being knee deep in the Texas bays. Thanks to my buddy www.barlosonthetrak.com for the music. Check him out.

The Devils River is a beautiful place. Jason, Turtle and I spent 3 days and 2 nights on the river. We put in at Del Norte State Natural Area and took out at Devils Back. We went up river the first day and camped at the SNA for night 1. We planned on camping on the gradient boundary but could not find a spot and ended up going all the way to the 29 Mile Paddler Camp on Day 2. We took our our tim...

Turtle, Jason and Myself went on a overnight kayaking adventure down the Guadalupe River. We did 9 miles the first day and 6 miles the second day. The views were amazing. The water was low in places and we had to walk the kayaks, but still made for a great time. The River was only flowing at 225 CFS.

I LOVE TEXAS AND RIVER! GREAT VIDEO
AWESOME!
Always run it. Always. Dolan falls was the only place we got out at. I wish I'd have run it now. We are going back and I'm gonna run it. But hey too each his own.
Did you have a guide for this trip?
You can get a guide but I have done it each time without a guide.
@@nathanonks5044 was navigation ever an issue?
What a beautiful river! This must be the "Texas hill country" that I've always heard so much about.
This is SW Texas about an hr away from the Mexico border. The hill country is the area just west of Austin/San Antonio. Way less remote than the Devils River.
That river is absolutely cashed 30 people on the river during my trip earlier this month. 17 people at a camp site. Fishing was awful. Devils river is no longer a hidden gem. THANKS RUclips 😃
How did you find out about it? And if you were so concerned why did you go? It's all about you ain't it. I've been and going again. And again and again.
Heck yea brother much love!!! When we doing this together
Going to get an October trip scheduled here soon. I will definitely let you know.
How long was your paddle that day? Where was that other dam area, Was that Martindale?
It was 11 miles the first day and 5 miles the second day. The second dam was in Martindale. I believe it is just called Martindale dam.
Where was it that you put in at those falls? And then the portage at that dam?
We put in at lions club. You pass the falls outside of town.
👍Very good man🎣
Thanks! I appreciate it.
nice vid
Thanks! I am trying to get out on the water more.
Great video and thanks for sharing the music too!
I like the video! P.S. the same old shit boats are still parked behind Clark"s, only the Pelican shit is thicker on the top of them now.
Nathan Two great videos on the Devils River. I am planning on making this trip June 2021 and have a couple of questions: 1) what portion of the river did you run (put in & take out); 2) is June a good time to run it; and 3) for star gazers would you recommend running it during a full moon or a new moon? Thanks for your time!
We did Del Norte to Devils Back. If you go in June plan for head winds and for the heat. I would say new moon but I am not certain.
Great video!
very nice indeed well done got my support👍👍👍 I'm happy to subscribe,
dolan falls...camped out there with the boy scouts and friends about 50 years ago...for several days..
lucky
that wasn't real smart
man that is amazing!! hope i can get down there with my yak and experience it myself!
Was good to see you guys out there!
It was good to meet you man!
Looks like north around the upper Devils River
You are correct. It is pretty close to the Devils River.
@@nathanonks5044 I lived here for 30 years about a mile north of Rough Canyon Marina on lake Amistad /Devils river right on the water

Great video. I'd love to visit from GA one day. I love the song you chose as well. JBT OCEAN!! Epic
God thats one beautiful bike
Very tough race, I struggled in the woods as well.
Awesome video! I'm heading out there in a couple weeks. When was this filmed? Just curious if we will get similar flows as y'all.
Looked like a fun trip! I’d like to make it out to the devils one day
I would greatly appreciative it if I could go on a river adventure with you and watch how you shoot and edit your videos. I will trade good times for any contribution I can make.
Can’t wait to take this trip with ya brotha
I am going to start planning it soon. I will definitely let you know.
Do you know of any tracks or trails in the Lubbock region, like within 2 hours or 3
Buffalo Springs lake is the only place I know out there. I have a video from out there. There is a lot more there than you see in the video.
This video is amazing. We might launch from the park this weekend. Where do you all camp at night? Looks like a park.
We stayed at the Guadalupe canoe livery. I believe it was $5 a person for the night. Make sure to check water flow. It can be low during summer months.
Wheres this at and have you moved from lubbock?
This is in central TX. I was just visiting my brother in Lubbock on some other videos.
@@nathanonks5044 okay thanks!
Thanks how was the fishing this time around?
It was good but not amazing. I think we had the best fishing before Dolan Falls this year and last year was the opposite.
leaving Saturday going bakers crossing to rough canyon any advise on lures?
Senkos, square bills, frogs and crawfish. I just got back on Sunday from another trip down the devils. The water was way up compared to this video. Y'all have fun and good luck!
Where did y’all put in and put out of the river? Would love to make this same trip this spring!
We put in at the state park and got out at rebecca creek road. Make sure to check river flow. This section can be very low during the summer.
Nathan Onks thank you! I think we’re going in April/May. How long did it take y’all to get to camp from the date park? We want to fish as much as possible but get back a few hours before dark.
@@AmericanSavage1776I believe it was 9 miles to camp. It took most all day but we stopped to swim and hangout a few different times.
Cool video ! Love the Sturgill music involved. I can’t wait to do Devils River one day.
Great video! Just started fishing from a kayak and trying to plan a day trip. Also recognized Ocean by John Butler but I’ve heard this version - kudos!
Yaking is awesome!! And yup, John butler rocks!!
At the 47 ish minute when you went down the rapid I was like damn your hauling ass dont flip lol. Did you lose anything when you flipped before this part. Still watching I will be back with more comments lol.
Brian Morales I lost a gopro session when I flipped. Both my gopro mounts broke but I had a float on one of them and was able to grab it. The other one was claimed by the devils river. Lol
@@nathanonks5044 no way I was watching another devils trip and they found a go pro at marbles fall when they jumped off the rock like yall did. They found it last month when they went. I will get you the name of the youtuber and you can see if it's yours or not.
W.E.T water entertainment television. Go ask him about the go pro. They found it. That's bad ass if it's your.
Sorry I looked at the dates wrong but they did find a go pro.
Nice video a fee buddys and myself are planning a trip this spring what part of the river did yall do this in. We are looking to start in gonzales and go to Victoria. Did yall have issues camping on the bank or with any land owners.
Brian Morales this was from the Guadalupe state park to rebecca creek road near spring branch tx. We camped at a livery on the river. I think it was $5 a person to camp. Have fun it is a beautiful river.
@@nathanonks5044 cool deal thanks. I am sure we will. Maybe one day we can plan a trip further up but this one I believe we will stay closer to our home and see how it is. Thanks and great video for sure. Yall do this often or just here and there.
Brian Morales I try to get out as much as possible. I am in central tx so there are a lot of rivers around here. I have a couple of other videos from the san marcos river and devils river here in tx.
@@nathanonks5044 cool deal I am s saltwater guy and we just want to do a little river camping trip. Something s little different. Well thanks for the feed back and stay safe.
I've gone from hocheim to cuero...I'm always scanning Google earth for entry points and possible camp sites, I find itll help alot once you are out there so you have a general idea of where you are going to try to camp. But tbh most of the landowners probably wont even know you're there with a nice simple camp.
What part of May did y'all go? Some friends and I did the 30 miler Memorial Day weekend.
Travis Moebes this was the first weekend of may.
What kayaks did y’all take in this trip?
Bill Bryant we used a Jackson Coosa HD, a feelfree lure, and a native slayer 12.
Thank you so much Nathan Onks!! Any helpful hints for someone taking new people to kayaking down the Devil?
Bill Bryant make sure there is enough water first. I was supposed to go again over labor day weekend but the water levels were too low. Be prepared to paddle into strong headwinds. I suggest booking the paddler camps because its hard to find a spot without trespassing.
Nathan Onks can do thank you so much for the advice and please keep making videos I love watching yours!!
Hi! Nice waterfall and river! Big like 2. Please check out my simular channel and consider subscribing. Mutual support?
Looks Fun! Where did yall launch and take out? I wanna do an overnite but something different than rochelles on the brazos. Nice vid!

@@nathanonks5044 Did you have a truck parked to haul your stuff back to state park or is there a service that'll pick you up? I want to take my son on this trip but it would just be the two so I would need a way back to the state park.
