I really appreciate what Matt said at the end- that maybe activism is about choosing what we choose to do out of love and compassion (thus not re-traumatising peoples). Thanks Indigo and Matt, it was a great talk.

That must have been horrible for Indigo to see misuse of her efforts. Agree people have a choice to try to stand up even if only in a small way/not be complicit as Matt said. Systems are not people but but people serve systems probably for many reasons: out of fear, when they perceive benefit to themselves - there's lots of fear generated from having all that responsibility - the system is a monster with teeth!

Interesting (to see the comments of others here), I am going to leave this comment for myself (if I come back to it), I might've gone through 6 sessions of ultra brief pulse ECT in June 2024. I did have gaps in memory like forgetting whether I'd told someone something so I tell it to them again. But as of now Aug 12 2024, I have no memories or functional disabilities. I do have a slight tremor in my left hand but I am uncertain whether it is from the meds I take (because it used to be there albeit less intense/less pronounced for at least a couple years before the ECT, possibly thanks to mood stab meds), as my meds have been significantly changed from what I was taking before ECT. An antidepressant has been reduced from its max permissable dose to the lowest permissable dose for eg. But other meds have been added. Until about 2 weeks ago I overall felt really good, I had to agree that it was like depression was in remission, until I had a significant change in my routine where I had to go be at a friend's for their wedding related stuff. Mood has been slowly decreasing/worsening since imho albeit that could also be due to new work challenges added last week plus having to face the fact that my current job does not provide me with a salary I can last a month on, if I did not have others monetary assistance. Especially the knowledge that to get a job that pays 2-3x this, I will have to go through a much tougher stressful corporate work environment, which seems unfeasible when I still struggle with my current job in academia (less stress than corporate). I have watched talks by psychiatrists on how the post ECT relapse rate is v high, hence the need for maintenance meds, and in some cases maintenance ECT... Something I will talk to the professor about when I meet them next week. But I'd really like to see how I do longer term (wish to revisit this comment and reply to it) especially since I do still plan on entering the higher stress corporate work environment for the higher pay, since if I am to stay in my current job path, I will have to do a masters or MBA to progress, which would add stress too on top of the current job anyway.

The reality is that we are in the dark age (probably worse than that) of mental health. On one side we have the biochemical model, on the other one those psycho-social models which are absolutely ineffective and are more political than anything else. The truth is that our industrialized societies are incompatible with mass mental wellbeing, there is hope for the single individual but most people are not capable/willing to put up against the entire civilization. It may sounds like some Übermensch rant, but even rants are true somethimes.

I'm french and had 5 electrochocs in France. I suffer from horribles and chronic headaches since I had it, and had to learn to manage to life with a feeling of pain that made my cried everydays. I also have the impression I perform worse in academics. I had to abandon my studies for a while because I felt so much pain while studying and trying to memorize I wasn't capable to continue. I have less less ECT than this woman and I empathise. ECT horribles sides effects are real.

Laura, This was quite a while ago, now. I want to once again Thank You and Commend you for your selfless work on behalf of the vulnerable, suffering, powerless victims of these demons. They all know what the future is for patients who take their drugs. You have done an immense amount of good. It's too late for me, but I will continue on with the Fight! I admire your strength and resolve. I wish I Knew Then. I might well have been by your side. As I write this they are still destroying lives, but The DEA is finally going after them for recklessly prescribing benzos. It's a start, anyway. I know this to be the case. It only took The Authorities 65 years to hold them accountable for that. What they did to me is not only criminal, but profoundly shocking.

You're amongst the heroes of our times, thank you for your valuable work. By the way augmenting productivity at the expenses of productivity's quality is amongst the dumbest ideas made possible by this cancerous economy, just as ironic as noticing how the believers of eugenics are the most mentally underdeveloped amongst all people. She withdrew from Anti-Psychotic drugs, many of them for Bipolar Disorder, She advocates drug free now, and that is where much of the hostility by the Public starts. She has spoken about her childhood as privileged, attending a private school, she was made a leader by the other girls, and then at 14yrs old she had an identity type of crisis, and became labeled Bipolar, enslaved to body killing drugs and worse mind altering than her identity crisis. All her girlfriends at the private school demoted her as leader and rejected her systematically by subtly ignoring and excluding her. Even though her study was affected by the drugs, she was accepted to Harvard University. Then she learned of withdrawing from the drugs, and is one or the major reason she was referring to Anti-Psychiatry here. You cannot get your rights back if you cannot get off those drugs and refuse to enroll in the mental health system. Laura did manage to graduate from Harvard, and has been an activist in various groups since.

Always good to see alternatives to the reductionist, medicalisation that we see everywhere. However this making space to understand, hear and be heard, requires a level of resources that most are just not furnished with. ‘Soothing’ is missing from life for millions and self soothing, via drugs (prescribed and illegal), alcohol, garbage food, gambling is common place. The average family are bathed in stress from waking to bedtime, surrounded by a poisoned food system, debt and poor neighbourhoods acutely aware of ones position in the class system. I wonder how following the advice here would look, if you were still living in a cramped shit hole in Hartlepool, if this really ever was your experience, personally, I’m doubtful. The common factors approach in the therapy literature seem clear that the main helpful factor in any successful therapy is nothing to do with therapy but all about resources, in the broadest sense. What is disordered are many elements of the culture, the constant competition, comparing and self interest. Most jobs, school system and class etc. The science here seems pretty clear. Talking about the brain as if we understand it seems just another form of false advertising. Wise compassionate words are all very well - seems a bit like like pouring artificial fertiliser on to a beautiful plant that is struggling to survive because its planted in dog turds, with limited sunlight and water from a urinal. RESOURCES are what the plant and us are needed. Anyone writing such books ought to be living in poverty conditions, perhaps then we might get to a realistic view of what is possible and what is not.

Finally someone who's saying it. Thank you very much. Enough with the same bs going round and round in all sorts of unawarely self-referential and overpraised expertise as if the medical industry wasn't all based on the same dysfunctional baseline slightly dressed in different shades although constantly presented as revolutionary whatever approaches. Those who made the damage shall certainly not be the ones charged for the fixing but they should surely be bloody removed from a kind of responsibility that they should have never taken in the first place. Their theories and practices should be exclusively on and for themselves and hands off from the rest of living, experts of other people's matters my bollocks.

you folks are doing excellent much needed work to change our mental ill health systems. The shift will take time because corporate power controls the narrative from multiple angles. The medicalisation of distress has been linked to much needed real world benefits like reasonable adjustments in the disordered work place or discorded school or actual financial gain. Under these circumstances people will happily go along with the narrative because people require resources to cope and grow. Never mind the drugs these labels most often lead to are a disaster for human wellbeing, we're all educated into immediate gratification and short termism.
