Its always working. Sometimes rest is the best way to bring it forward. That is why driving is one of a persons most creative times.

When I did the Artist’s Way the first time, I decided to be my own best friend. I never say anything about myself that I would say to or about my best friend. (I never say anything about my best friend I wouldn’t say in front of her.)

Morning pages helped me become more authentic as I got to know myself better.
@@QuayLogan yeah they are a big component in finding different aspects of our truth.
Such good points about criticism! We are vulnerable as artists and it takes courage to put ourselves out there, then the judgements can really hurt! Morning pages are a great tool for me to process these wounds. Getting the feelings--anger, rejection, hurt on to the paper--can get it out of the soul. Then following up with affirmations. And just get back on the horse that bucked you off. Keep on making these videos Matt. They will be a great benefit to artists along the way!
I've found that criticism from friends and family have been the hardest for me to deal with. Even a kind word of criticism can send me reeling. At the same time, I can heal when I am able to identify what criticism is valid and the things that are more about the other person.

@@QuayLogan Thank you. So many people are afraid of their emotions. When we realize our emotions are our friends, we can safely release them through our art. Not only can we express them and create something, we can also get through that thing and come out on the other side with joy. It is the repression of our feelings that causes suffering. Art is a safe expression of our feelings.

@@QuayLogan I think the things we go through in life help us to create art. We can use our tragedy to stay stuck or we can use it as fuel to create. It’s all about how we respond to the things in our life that determines our path forward.

This is your best video yet! I definitely turned into my own worst critic after other people criticized me for being an artist. It actually stopped me from creating publicly. I liked what you were saying about choosing the right script for the area you live in. Some shows are right for a particular area in town, while others are not!
It is also important to start where your community is currently and gain their trust. I love creating edgy work. If you have built a rapport with your audience, they will accept more edgy work over time. Choosing the right play or musical is a balancing act between what you are passionate about and what will excite your community.
The Artist’s Way has been such a transformational book. Highly recommended!
