As commuters head toward the Orange Crush Interchange on SB CA-57, there's a rare sign showing drivers how to get to a freeway connection not directly served in Southern California, that between SB CA-57 and NB I-5, which is served via Chapman Ave. (The I-5/CA-91 interchange a few miles NW in Buena Park is another example of this.) Just within the freeway connectors that make up the Orange Crush Interchange, there are no signs anywhere that direct commuters how to get from NB I-5 to EB CA-22, from WB CA-22 to SB I-5, or from SB I-5 to NB CA-57. The missing links between I-5 and CA-22 are made via Main Street and like the missing connection with SB CA-57 and NB I-5, the connection from SB I-5 to NB CA-57 is made using Chapman Ave.

The Garden Grove Freeway (CA-22) is one of the most important freeways in the Los Angeles area, mainly because it's the only freeway that connects Long Beach, the biggest city in the Los Angeles area other than LA itself, to places like Santa Ana, Orange, and Anaheim, the home of the Angels and Disneyland. It's also a way for those traveling from Long Beach to Pomona via CA-57 without having to use I-605 and I-10. Yet, until a few years ago it was like I-5 used to be, just three lanes per side, meaning almost constant congestion during daylight hours.
