Quake II: Ground Zero is NOT a Quake Game
...it’s Anachronistic Torment.
The Quake II mission packs are an entirely forgettable effort to offer players a fresh perspective on the invasion of Stroggos. Can the 2023 Nightdive Remaster redeem what used to be a historically miserable experience?
Completing the trilogy is Ground Zero, a game that shouldn't represent the Quake franchise and yet it wears the title.

Fun fact, the turret at 13:16 is a unique entity: the machine gun turret, the only one in the game. The remaster restored its original function which, due to a coding error, reverted to a blaster turret in the original release.

Quake II: The Reckoning is the WORST Quake Game

The Quake II mission packs are an entirely forgettable effort to offer players a fresh perspective on the invasion of Stroggos. Can the 2023 Nightdive Remaster redeem what used to be a historically miserable experience? First up is The Reckoning, which is presumably a title that is referring to the desire to "pay back" the attack on Earth. Note: This video references three different movies star...
Quake II Is the Best Quake Game - This is Why
Просмотров 97 тыс.Год назад
The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. This game's cohesive design is what elevates it above a generic sci-fi shooter and the other games sharing its title. Quake II is the result of an identity crisis brought on by a personnel shakeup at iD software. In 1996, John Romero left the company and the resulting turmoil produced the best game in the Quake series. #quake #quake2 #fps #retroga...
I couldn't get past the ladder that doesn't look like a ladder. Got dragged down every time.
I just finished this expansion for the first time in the remaster and I must say I had a lot of fun with it, more than the base game probably. I was actually blown away (in a good way) by the fact that I found myself crawling around with 40 or 15 health in the earlier sections, because that's an experience I never got in the base game, cause the base game is just so easy. Despite having less ammo than in the base game, I still never found myself in a tight spot, which kinda sucks. I actually like the phalanx as well although I think it sucks in the original version. The phalanx can two shot (or quadruple shot I guess) Icari and maybe other things that will survive two rockets. And I just enjoyed using it more than the old rocket launcher (maybe if I wasn't bored of the rocket launcher, I wouldn't find the phalanx as fun, although I do think it feels more satisfying once you get the hang of it). It was also my goto weapon for fighting the Beta class gladiators, cause it's the remaster, and they destroy their shields quickly. I never noticed its idle sound funnily enough, so I'm fine personally. I didn't think the game was unfair in any sense. I didn't really like the Gekk cave thing where you have to fight like 80 of them to get the airstrike marker. I found myself unable to dodge or avoid the beta class iron maiden rockets (unlike vore projectiles), which could be solved by cover but I still didn't enjoy fighting them. The trap is a gimmick I used once or twice to get health. Ripper guard are annoying and the laser ones are just used as obnoxious turrets later in the game. I wish I would see all six versions of the guard too. There are other things I didn't like, but for me, Quake 2 is one of those few games that just stuck with me and I love them as they are, and now that I finally got to playing this expansion in the remaster, I almost feel like I'd be unreasonably spoiled to expect more of it, and I'm satisfied. Onto Ground Zero now I guess...
I had the psx version of Quake 2.. played it still love it all these years later, Sonic Mayhem's OST was straight fire, March of the Strogg slaps so hard
and months later quake 2 got a remaster
I liked Quake 2 like 10x more than Quake 1. The Quake 1 levels looked like they were made by a 5 year old, all levels were a maze with no sense whatsoever. Quake 1 only had very advanced graphics for that time, everything else was sh... Quake 2 on the other hand was a masterpiece.
QUAKE 2 is still absolutely amazing to play and still one of the best FPS games of all time. In fact, my entire top 10 best games of all time list is made up of nothing but DOOM and QUAKE games. 1. DOOM ETERNAL 2. DOOM (2016) 3. DOOM 1 PLUS DOOM II ENHANCED 4. DOOM 64 5. QUAKE 1 ENHANCED 6. QUAKE 2 ENHANCED 7. QUAKE 3 ARENA 8. QUAKE CHAMPIONS 9. DOOM 3 10. QUAKE 4
YES I'm comment number 777!
Stubbled on your channel when I wanted to see how long these expansions were. Really am enjoying the content, got my sub lol
Im currently playing through this on the second hardest difficulty and it's just pure torture. It's very repetitive, and you are constantly getting shot from every angle.. Extremely cramped spaces where you get ambushed by 10 enemies at once! Not to mention extreme ammo scarcity in this expansion compared to the rest of the game. I know it's to make it more challenging, but it just doesn't do it in an engaging way. Quake 2 is decent, but Quake 1 outshines this game in every way. Most of the weapons in Quake 2 also had a serious downgrade. (Except for the railgun, that damn gun is awesome.) The first four episodes of this expansion were very repetitive, but the last episode when you get to the moon base was very fun. All that being said I still enjoyed Quake 2, and I love a challenge. But I was just pissed off writing this, and now I've calmed down and I'm almost finished with this expansion. When I unlock this achievement it's gonna be satisfying 😂
best part about quake 2: enabling God mode and using grenades while jumping at the enemy
I really like the Mission Packs, it's more Quake 2!
Every time I play Quake 1 I want more industrial grunge levels while when I play Quake 2 I want more gothic type levels, the fact both games have separate core settings really gives the series a best of both worlds feeling.
only good for me is the soundtrack, everything else feels so boring and slow, it's such a downgrade from the first game i can't really enjoy it, hell even changing guns is slow.
Quake 2 is my most played one, somehow blowing away Strogg to the tune of some raw industrial metal never gets old Never quite got the negativity around the game
>drops 3 banger vids on Quake 2 >doesn't elaborate >leaves What a chad
QII The reckoning multiplayer was extremely fun
Quake 2 is my favourite just because I prefer the sci-fi theme over the medieval theme. Also the BFG 10K. As a classic Doom nerd, of course I love that.
If Reckoning is the Quake II version of Plutonia, THIS is Quake II's Extreme ROTT.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA no way it's not. Quake 1 is way better.
Bought a voodoo 2 for Q2...
The female skin's cries killed it for me. We Grunt it here, boy.
Why they decided to give the Phalanx a shrill idle sound that doesn’t even particularly fit its personality - when no other weapon has an idle sound if I remember correctly - is beyond me
The railgun and bfg10k both have a humming idle sound you may or may not notice cause it's not aggressive. Some say it's to alarm others in deathmatch that someone has these powerful weapons in hand, which doesn't make sense for the phalanx. I guess it makes a sound cause it's a cool scifi particle gun so it needs to make a cool scifi particle gun sound? Or something like that they could cook up at home or take from a stock sound gallery. I personally didn't even notice the phalanx idle sound though, I only did now that I have checked for it, it does make the sound even in the remaster. Probably because I have the music quite loud and while I did use it a lot in the campaign, I never just ran around with it cause it's quite unweildy for fighting ambushes.
thank you. i always thought Q2 was better designed and that everything comes together better than the original Q1. i still really like Q3 Arena a lot, but it feels very different from the first 2.
what about call of the machine?
26:06 The Makron is not one being in particular, but rather the current leader of Stroggos. Whichever warlord is next in line becomes the new Makron. That’s why the Makron looks completely different in Quake 4 and also why the System Administrator from Call of the Machine is not called a Makron. The one in The Reckoning is either just another warlord or is the new Makron who only has leadership for a short time.
actually on your nestalga point at the end. I had never played quake 2 till a week ago. (I'm 29) I just skipped i due to my dad no liking quake one and well I only played pc games he liked as a kid. I played through it and loved it I've been playing it non stop on my steam deck. Honestly it's been the most fun I've had with a video game in a while.
Never played this mission pack. But I had it installed on our school PCs and we played it's multiplayer. It has a revamped q2dm1 map with nailgun and plasma beam added. it was a lot of fun.
Man oh man is the newer expansion 'Call of the Machine' so good!
You came out of nowhere and did 3 videos on my MOST FAVORITE game ever (Quake 2, I played it on my dad's colleague's work PC in the office of a railroad company building, adjacent to train repair and maintenance depots. You can imagine - exiting the office building, I visited depots, rooms, saw machinery, instruments, crates and all that resembled all the stuff I saw in Quake 2. Also, even the office building had an fuel oil smell which added to the overall atmosphere of the game.). I wish you all the best and hope to hear from your channel soon!
man you need to make more videos it can be about anything grant us eyes
Quake 2 is better
As a kid I preferred Quake II for I understood it. You're thrust smack dab in the military-industrial heart of the enemy, and now you have to bring ruin to them. Quake I had me stumped; one moment you fight a guy and his dog, next a floating snake. Not to mention Quake I being absolutely terrifying to an 8 year old.
i hated every second of this dlc
Wondering if anyone here played the unofficial expansion - Zaero?
i played this game when Gamespy was a thing. OMG the fragging and i had so much fun with this.
quake 1 better i dont care what the video essay says
I've played this game a lot and never heard the soundtrack, it was always turned off. I've never played the Multiplayer either, aside from a little bit at school, where we had the demo installed on every machine. As for the level design, I don't know why you find the Mines or the Reactor so difficult to remember.
As someone who never played Quake and just got into it, I love Quake 2 more. The AI is smart and relentless, I've never seen enemies duck your shots with such precision. I wish Quake 2 had more mod levels like Quake 1, because I'm having a blast with this one.
Yeah the multiplayer was so good that it ruined FPS games and turned them into mountain dew fueled screaming matches whenever someone didn't get the rocket launcher Otherwise a great game and its unfortunate that the players themselves were of such low quality
Wasn't this made by the guys who did Redneck Rampage? I guess that would make the "Redneck" name an easter egg.
Agreed. I just revisited the entirety of Quake 2 this year thanks to the remaster, and The Reckoning was annoying to heck and back. Not that the other content was exceptionally fun, but they really stole the cake (not a lie btw) with this one.
Loved it when it was new. Great additions to the original quake 2 and I wished it was more accessible for multiplayer deathmatch back then. I think with the rerelease it's more accessible?
Quake 2 music surpasses its predecessor? Man, can I have what you are smoking? Quake 2's music is sure groovy but it has far less atmosphere than Quake's soundtrack. You could plop Q2's soundtrack into any shooter from the late 90's/early 2000's era and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
Quake II is the best game ever but for it's multiplayer.. FFA & TDM is amazing in Q2. I've never since it came out played beyond the first level in single player but I've spent YEARS of my life playing online 😂
I prefer Q2. It was coming out as I was getting my first real PC. The soundtrack is also phenomenal.
Quake 1 is one of my all-time favourite games, and I've been playing it since the 90s. I have tried to play Quake 2 a few times, but can never get past the first couple levels. The enemies look like cutsey anime puffballs, the gibs look like you're rolling red dice, explosions are weird low-poly blobs that look nothing like explosions, the enemies look blurry, bloated, and indistinct.
Brings back memories. My brother and I played this game to death. Great levels, weapons, secret rooms, etc. Hands down, Quake is the best FPS in gaming history. I use the BFG for taking down big bosses.
It is realistic, the game use a brutalist design architecture.
7:36 splash damage.
